Top Six Reasons Why You are Losing Your Hair & How You Can Avoid Them

So you're worried about the hair on your hairbrush and pillow but not sure what is causing the hair loss? Here are six common reasons why you are losing your hair:

1. Rapid weight-loss

Rapid weight loss is no less than a physical trauma for your hair. Though weight loss may be good for you, dramatic weight loss most certainly is not. Apart from taxing your metabolism and burning out the lean muscles, rapid weight loss also damages your scalp and follicles.

Rapid weight-loss is triggered by crash dieting or starvation – your body is exhausted for energy and only focuses on vital functions like working your heart and brain. Result? You're thinner and so is your hair!

Further, hair is primarily made up of proteins. Lack of a balanced diet robs your body of its proteinreserves and the body expends little or none of it on hair.

What can you do?

Aim for healthy weight loss, not more than two or three pounds a week. Ensure your daily consumption of protein doesn't fall below 46 grams. If your crash diet has in fact shocked your body, the hair loss will typically continue for six months , after which the body will resume normal function.

2. Dehydration

Water not only hydrates your, your body, skin and hair, it also detoxes your scalp, freeing the pores of any accumulated chemicals, dirt and oil. Further, water transfers vitamins and minerals from the food you consume, to the blood and makes it available for use by hair. Not drinking enough water inhibits hair growth and also makes them weaker, causing them to fall..

What can you do?

While the 8 by 8 rule – drinking 8 glasses of water, 8 ounces per glass holds good, it is best to modify the water intake based on your lifestyle. More active people need up to 12 glasses of water per day to prevent dehydration. Also eating vegetables and fruits rich of water will give you the needed amount of water.

3. Sweat and dirt

Sweat and dirt clogs up pores, preventing your hair from “breathing” and growing. Keep your hair and scalp clean to promote hair growth.

Choose a shampoo that suits your hair type. Choose a mild shampoo if your hair often gets dirty.Massage your scalp lightly with your fingertips while shampooing and ensure you don't brush wet hair.

4. Shampoo and conditioner

Cleaning your hair with the wrong shampoo or conditioner is as damaging to your hair as not cleaning it at all. While shampoos and conditioners are increasingly being refined to be “good” for you, you still need to be wary of certain chemicals that cause excessive dryness of the hair, leading to weak hair and eventual hair loss.

The “2 in 1” shampoos for example, cause dandruff, promote hair-loss and also retard hair-growth.Applying conditioner on your scalp causes similar damage.

What can you do?

Read the label when purchasing. Avoid shampoos that contain chemicals like sodium/ammoniumlaureth sulfate and polysorbates. These damage your scalp and follicles. Instead, opt for milder, natural and herbal-based shampoos. When conditioning your hair, don't apply it on the scalp.

5. Too much moisture and oils

While you need to oil and moisturize your hair to build length, strength, shine and texture, over-do it and you end up clogging pores and inhibiting hair growth. Balance is the key.

What can you do?

Oil your hair not more than thrice a week, remembering every time to wash it off within an hour ortwo. In any case, you don't want to leave the oil on for more than eight hours.

6. Chemicals

The chemicals in colors and highlights damage follicles. Excessive coloring, highlighting, bleaching or perming not only make your hair thin out and develop split-ends, they also lead to hair loss.

What can you do?

Choose protein-based colors and avoid experimenting with your hair too much.
