Renewed plea tofind Jesse’s body

Jesse Richards was killedin a sustained and brutalattack over a drugs debt at acaravan park in CleevePrior on 31st July, 2009.

Five men were jailed in2012 in connection with hisdeath and were collectivelysentenced to more than 50years in prison, but thelocation of Jesse’s body hasnever been discovered,although police believe it isin Warwickshire.

Speaking on the anniver-sary, Jesse’s mum, LucyRichards, said: “I speak tothose people who haveinformation but haven’tcontacted police.

“If they could for oneminute put themselves inmy place they would knowthe heartache I am feelingand have felt for the last

seven years.”Superintendent Mark

Loader, who led the investi-gation, added: “The inves-tigation found evidence tosuggest Jesse’s body wastransported to an area inWarwickshire some timeafter his death. We knowsome individuals haveinformation and arechoosing not to come for-ward. I appeal to them toconsider the pain Jesse’sfamily continue to sufferlong after his death and askthem to re-consider con-tacting police.”

Underlining his commit-ment to tackling ruralcrime, the Commissioner’sfirst public engagement ontaking office in May was toattend a Rural Crime Forumin Over Whitacre, organ-ised by Rural Crime Co-ordinator Carol Cotterill.This featured local policeofficers, council officialsand a wide range of part-ners, including the NFU,who heard the public’sviews of crime in ruralcommunities and providedfeedback and advice on thesteps being taken to addresstheir concerns.

Mr Seccombe said: “Iwas hugely impressed bythe turnout at the meeting,which saw the village hallfull to capacity and reallyreinforced the importance

that rural communitiesplace on ensuring thatcrime is tackled as effec-tively as in our more urbanareas.

“We have a large numberof people in Warwickshireliving in smaller towns andvillages where farming andthe countryside are focalpoints for the communityand represent major parts ofthe local economy.� It’s vitaltherefore that the policegive rural crime a high pri-ority and I will be contin-uing to ensure this is thecase.”

He added: “I welcomethe large amount of workwhich is already beingundertaken across thecounty to get the messageacross to criminals thatrural areas should not beseen as soft spots forcrime.”

Arson warning for summer holidaysWARWICKSHIRE Fire and RescueService is warning of the dangers ofarson after dealing with 245 grassfires across the county last summer.

The service says most of these fireswere deliberate, reckless and poten-tially put lives at risk by divertingresources from genuine emergencieselsewhere.

In an effort to combat the problemthis summer, children and parents arebeing reminded that arson is not agame.

Arson Reduction Officer for War-wickshire Fire and Rescue Service,Rebecca Roberts, said: “Deliberatefires, in particular at areas of grasslandand refuse, waste our time and

resources and have the potential todelay us from reaching real emergen-cies where every single minute counts.

“It absolutely goes without sayingthat we prefer to prevent fires, notfight them, which is why we run anumber of prevention programmes atschools across the county talking toyoung people about the dangers and

legal consequences of fire setting.”Warwickshire County Council’s

Portfolio Holder for Community FireSafety, John Horner, added: “We areencouraging parents and carers totalk to their children about the dan-gers and consequences of playingwith fire, especially over the holidayperiod.”

join together and thank Godfor the time Dawn has spentwith us and pray that Godwill continue to guide andbless her as she moves on toher new role.”

Dawn, a keen musicianand accomplished drummerand flute player, arrangedthe music for the service andalso joined an orchestra forseveral musical interludesduring the service.

Dawn said: “I leave War-wickshire with a heavy heartbut am looking forward tothe challenge of my new rolein a very different location.”

New dual carriagewayto improve M40 access

The new road — whichWarwickshire CountyCouncil describes as an

important strategic projectfor the area — is just under amile in length.

Replacing the B4100 andB4451, the scheme hasbeen funded equally by thecounty council, the Depart-ment for Transport (DfT)Pinch Point Fund and theRegional Growth Fund viathe Coventry and Warwick-shire Local Enterprise Part-nership (CWLEP).

The county council saidit was the first of a numberof improvements which,when complete, wouldreduce congestion, improvesafety and unlock a numberof proposed major newdevelopment sites atGaydon and the immediatearea.

A further £1.5million hasbeen provided by JaguarLand Rover (JLR) toaccommodate extendingthe scheme to ensure thatthere is sufficient capacityon the network to allowtraffic to reach its sitesafely while JLR continues

to develop its internalinfrastructure. The con-struction contract has beenawarded and work is due tostart on Monday, 8thDecember, and take 13months to complete.

Cllr Peter Butlin, thecounty council’s portfolioholder for transport andplanning, said: “Theproject will provide vitalsafety improvements on themotorway and surroundingroads and that is essentialas the situation needs to beaddressed to keep roadusers safe.”

Cllr Philip Johnson,chairman of the countycouncil’s communitiesoverview and scrutinycommittee, said: “Theimprovements to this junc-tion are critical to the eco-nomic development of thecounty and will greatlyimprove access forworkers.”

A NEW £10m dual carriageway to improve the linkfrom the British Motor Museum at Gaydon to theM40 has been completed after 18 months’ work.

Campaign highlights driving dangers A CAMPAIGN to make olderpeople aware of the risks whenthey are behind the wheel hasbeen launched.

Over the last three years therehave been 1,508 personal injurycasualties over the age of 60,which represents 18 per cent of allcasualties on Warwickshire’sroads.

However, in terms of casualtiessustaining serious injury or beingkilled, just under a quarter ofroad casualties — one in five —were aged 60+.

The campaign is underpinnedby Drive On magazine — a freeguide for drivers over 65.

It has been distributedthroughout libraries and doctorssurgeries to ensure older peopleare aware of the risks and haveaccess to key advice and informa-tion.

The magazine is designed tooffer a wide range of advice to the65+ age group, not just road safetybut also areas addressing efficientdriving, the law and mobility.

County Council’s portfolio holderfor community safety, said: “Somesenior drivers are among the beston the road in the UK, howevereven with decades of experiencebehind them, slower reactions andhealth problems, such as poor eye-sight, can make today’s roadsmore intimidating and challengingfor them.

“We urge Warwickshire’s olderdrivers to read the latest adviceand guidance by picking up thefree Drive On magazine at theirlocal library or doctors surgery.”

Cyber trail to bring storiesto life at Chedhams YardCHEDHAMS Yard in Welles-bourne is to be brought to life forvisitors with the help of a newcyber story trail.

The story trail mobile website willoffer visitors a unique insight into theheritage attraction through historicaland folklore stories, music and inter-active artwork.

The trail at Chedhams Yard is thefirst to by created by the Live andLocal project which has been funded

by a grant from Warwickshire CountyCouncil’s Tourism Event Fund.

As part of the scheme, Warwick-shire canal boat-based musician KelElliott has been gathering stories andpersonal reminiscences from yard vol-unteers and Wellesbourne residents totransform into story-songs.

These songs, along with field andarchival recordings can be enjoyed byvisitors via their smartphones or on-siteiPods as they walk through the yard.

The cyber trail will be launched on9th September at 7.30pm at St Peter’sChurch with Kel Elliot and Her ThreeMan Orchestra performing the songsabout Chedhams Yard.

Visitors to Chedham’s Yard will beable to use the mobile website for thefirst time on Saturday, 10th September,as part of Heritage Open Day 2016.

Power cut blacks out thousands of homesA SHORT power cutaffected around 4,000homes in Stratford on Sat-urday evening.

Western Power Distribu-tion confirmed that it lastedfor around two to the threeminutes at 5.30pm.

A spokeswoman said:“The problem was there

was a fault on a piece ofequipment. Engineers re-routed supplies and werethen able to carry out workto fix it.

“The interruption lastedaround two to three min-utes while the automatedequipment brought suppliesback on.”

VOLUNTEERS for anew archive projectcentring on Warwick’sHealey Motor Com-pany are being sought.

Organisers of the projectare looking for people tocollect oral histories fromformer employees of thecompany and Healeyowners and enthusiasts.

These personal memo-ries will be used to bring tolife existing documents andphotographs at the War-wickshire County RecordOffice.

In April, a £51,300 lot-tery grant was securedalong with other funding tohelp buy the Healey com-pany archives which hadbeen put up for sale by thefamily.

Sam Collenette, head ofthe Archive Service, said:“This is a fantastic opportu-nity to get involved with aniconic collection and helpus tell the wider story of theHealey Motor Company

and its cars. “It is also a chance to

Respected lifeguardKeith passes awayTHE Royal Life SavingSociety UK’s HonoraryHealth and SafetyAdvisor for SwimmingPools and former chiefexecutive has died atthe age of 68 followingillness.

Keith Sach, fromWroxall, was held inextremely high regard forhis expertise in this area ofhealth and safety across thecountry and not only pro-vided guidance and supportto the RLSS UK but also tomany swimming pool oper-ators. As a respected safetyconsultant he was regularlycalled upon as an expertwitness for his vast knowl-edge as a leader in his fieldof sport recreation andleisure.

Keith was a long termmember of RLSS UK’sWarwickshire branch andhad a rich and successfulhistory with the charity.

One of the branch’sformer vice-presidents anda previous combined RLSSCommonwealth Secretaryand RLSS UK CEO, Keithheld a number of seniorroles throughout his career.

Born in 1948, a seven or

eight-year-old Keith joinedhis local swimming club inHounslow, Middlesex, andwas encouraged to takeRLSS UK awards in life-saving. He took his bronzemedallion when he was 13-years-old in the open airpool at Ashford in Mid-dlesex.

Keith went on to gainexperience working in life-saving and lifeguarding as aMaster at Solihull School inWarwickshire from 1970 to1979. From the mid-1970she served on the National

Technical and Lifeguardcommittee.�

He was appointed asRLSS UK Director andCommonwealth Secretaryin July 1979 when theRLSS UK’s Headquarterswere at Desborough Housein London. The role ofDirector and Common-wealth Secretary were thensplit out in the mid-1980s.

Keith was responsible forthe move from DesboroughHouse to MountbattenHouse, Warwickshire, in1980 and he oversaw thevisit of HM The QueenMother to Studley for theformal opening of the newpremises in June 1981 (theanniversary of Lord Mount-batten’s birthday). Keith later became RLSSCommonwealth Vice Presi-dent.�

Kieran completes ultimate challengeWELLESBOURNE resi-dent and Warwick Schoolpupil Kieran Speechly hascompleted one of the mostchallenging long distancebike rides that it’s possibleto do in the UK.

Kieran, who is just 13,rode from John O’Groatsat the northern tip of Scot-land to Land’s End inCornwall in just 16 days.

He covered over 1,000miles during the trip, goingup more than 17,000metres of hills — commer-cial planes fly at around9,000 metres — andburning 56,000 calories.

Kieran is a keen triath-lete, racing for StratfordTriathlon Club, and is aseasoned cyclist and amember of Stratford

Cycling Club, regularlyattending their trainingsessions at Tiddington andjoining their junior roadrides.

He made the ride withhis dad, Andrew, andbetween them they haveraised over £1000 for theirchosen charities — TheAlzheimer’s Society, andParkinson’s UK — bothcauses that affect familymembers.

On completion of histrip, Kieran said: “It wasmore challenging than Ithought it would be.

County’s future remainsunclear after Brexit voteTHE run-up to the EU refer-endum was a slight drag on busi-ness confidence in Coventry andWarwickshire — but the effectof Brexit and the political fall-out is still not clear.

The Coventry and WarwickshireChamber of Commerce carried out itssecond quarterly economic survey of2016 ahead of the referendum and theresults have just emerged.

While more than half of businessesin both manufacturing and servicesstill expected turnover to rise in thecoming 12 months, it was down on theprevious quarter.

In the service sector, 54 per cent ofcompanies expected turnover to go up,41.4 per cent thought it would remain

the same while only 4.6 per cent felt itwould decrease.

In manufacturing, 50.6 per cent offirms were anticipating a rise inturnover, 39.5 per cent said it wouldstay the same and ten per cent believeit will drop.

The overall figure for the previousquarter saw 73 per cent of firms fore-cast a rise in turnover.

On the employment front, 25.9 percent of businesses in the service sectorwere expecting to increase headcount,72.8 per cent thought it would stay thesame and 1.2 per cent said it wouldfall.

In manufacturing, 27.5 per cent pre-dicted taking on more people, 68.8 percent said it would remain constant and3.8 per cent were expecting to reducethe number of staff.

Louise Bennett, chief executive ofthe Coventry and WarwickshireChamber of Commerce, said thebuild-up to the referendum had causeduncertainty.

She said: “We heard from membersin the weeks leading up to the refer-endum that decisions were being puton hold until the vote had taken placeand I believe that can explain the fallin the number of businesses expectingturnover and headcount to rise.

“Equally, there wasn’t too muchalarm — with only a very smallnumber of firms expecting to have tocut headcount.

“What we don’t know, yet, is theeffect Brexit has had on confidence inCoventry and Warwickshire and, actu-ally, I think for most firms it’s still tooearly to say.”

JLR’s Julysales boostJAGUAR Land Rover hasreported its best ever Julyretail sales of 44,486 vehi-cles — up 34 per cent onlast year. The month’srecord performance hasbeen driven by strong salesof the Land Rover Dis-covery Sport, the JaguarXE and the F-PACE.

Gaydon-based JaguarLand Rover sold 336,052vehicles in the first sevenmonths of 2016, up 23 percent on the same period inthe prior year.

In July, sales increasedin China and NorthAmerica by 64 per cent and51 per cent respectively,compared to the previousyear. Retail sales were upyear-on-year across allother regions: 38 per centin the UK, 24 per cent inEurope and two per cent inother overseas markets.

Renewed call for zero tolerance

The number of deathsinvolving a driver under theinfluence of alcohol was240 in 2014.

That figure has been con-sistently reported since2010 and looks set to con-tinue if the provisional esti-mate for the 2015 figuresproves to be accurate.

The DfT claim this con-sistency in drink-drivefatalities is a sign of sta-bility in their work toreduce drink-driving since2010, with drivers under the

influence accounting for 13per cent of road deaths in2014 and 15 per cent in2013.

Brake argue that the fig-ures and the governmentapproach have stagnatedsince the removal of roadcasualty reduction targets in2010.

Lucy Amos, researchadvisor for Brake, said:“Drink-drive fatalities inthe UK have now remainedalmost static since 2009 andit’s clear that decisive

action is urgently needed toachieve further reductionsin deaths and injuries.

“We see the countlesslives devastated when

someone is killed by a drinkdriver, and it is for thisreason that Brake is callingfor a zero-tolerance drink-drive limit, the reintroduc-

tion of casualty reductiontargets and greater prioriti-sation and resources fortraffic policing to tackle theproblem.”

ROAD safety charity Brake is calling on the gov-ernment to take urgent action after figuresreleased by the Department for Transport (DfT)show little change in the number of people killedbecause of drink-driving.
