Hey, it’s the beginning of a new year with our new officer corps. I’m really excited about the upcoming year and think we will have a lot of fun and some exciting times.

I like to set a goal for the year ahead, besides the always relevant goal: TO RIDE AND HAVE FUN. Last year it was to upgrade our website and get the cabinets installed in our HOG room. I am very happy that we were able to accomplish both those goals.

This year I would like to see our chapter to do more to

a: increase our membership and

b: work in tandem with our dealership.

To this end we will provide a HOG chapter table manned by chapter volunteers at more dealer functions. It was gratifying to see how rapidly the sign up sheets for the motorcycle expo HOG table were filled. Also we should have a presence at the Bike Purchasers VIP party that the dealership is instituting on the second Saturday of every month. The first one is February 8. This is the perfect opportunity to introduce ourselves to potential members. They will have already paid the most expensive part of their dues: the purchase of the bike!

We have already printed up brochures for information and distribution and we will be trying to get those to new bike buyers at the point of sale. We will be looking to the dealership to help us accomplish this.

We have also proposed to the dealership that the HOG Chapter will help plan, man. and fund two large events, one in the late spring/early summer and another in the early fall. We will need ideas and volunteers for that as well. I think this can be a great time and make for some memorable experiences.

All in all, I am looking forward to a great year of fun and riding. I hope you all are too.

Rumble on…

A fresh new year is upon us and that means ride planning. This is the perfect time of year to get your calendars out and start planning your vacation and extended weekends. One of the things I love the most about the riding season is the anticipation of getting together with friends and enjoying day rides or going on extended rides and creating new friendships. That has happened every year since Jude and I bought our Harley and we feel so blessed to be a part of such a warm and inviting family with our HOG Chapter No. 1.

Our ride planning meeting is coming up on January 25, 2020 and with Jason, our Head Road Captain’s hard work we have the advantage of knowing we will have leads to cover rides that fellow HOG members can suggest but don’t particularly want to lead. So bring all those great ideas to the meeting and let’s fill that calendar. In the words of our fearless Head Road Captain, let’s make this the year of a Million Miles. If you are already signed up for Ride 365, great job! If you have an associate or associate members signed up, BONUS!! If you haven’t taken advantage of Ride 365 now is the perfect time to get signed up.

It is super simple, write down your VIN and Mileage, bring it to the next meeting, turn it into Lori Ellis and she will run with it! Then all you have to do is turn your mileage in every month or so and sit back and watch the pins and patches come rolling in. At the end of the year, if you have travelled the most miles you will get bragging rights and a new tire! Big time score!

To give out a little tease for the coming year I have already planned out a few rides I will be asking to get on the Ride Calendar. Field of Heroes (Flight 93), Fried Lobster Run to Macon, Missouri, Windy 9 including Triple Nickel and that is just the ice breaker of what is in store for the coming season.

Can’t wait to gather with everyone in a few weeks and fill that calendar.

It is the start of a new decade! As the Membership Officer, it means it is the time of year for our Annual Membership Drive, which runs through March. Everyone in the Chapter must renew for the new year and after the March meeting, we will be removing any unpaid members from our official roster as well as the Chapter Facebook page. Please do not let your membership lapse.

If you have not yet renewed for the 2020 year, dues and membership forms, found on our website, https://www.hogindychap1.com/ under Join Us button, can be dropped off or mailed to the Dealership at any time; or just bring them with you to the next Chapter meeting on February 1st. Please remember that in order to be a member of Indianapolis Chapter No. 1, you must be a current National HOG member.

Thanks to everyone who have paid their 2020 dues. During the January meeting we collected 102 forms!

See you at the next meeting!

Hi. I’m Richard Daugherty, Activities Officer for Indianapolis Chapter #1. My goal for the New Year is to see as much member participation as possible and to have fun! Stay tuned for information on upcoming activities. I also welcome your suggestions for this riding season. Please don’t hesitate to approach me with any activity ideas you may wish to see this year.

I am really looking forward to a great riding season and seeing as many members, as possible, at our events!

Hey Gang, 2020 has started out of the gates with a bang! All the officers are working hard to ensure another great riding season, with myself included. Within a few short weeks we’ll have concluded our ride plan meeting and it’ll be February before we know it. Behind the scenes, we’ll be coming up with the routes, figuring out restaurants to frequent and even logistics of overnight rides and so the list goes on and on... One thing that seemingly has gained a lot of attention in the last couple months has been the Road Captain Program. I’m truly overwhelmed by the number of volunteers and I’m hopeful that with their help we can bring our level of riding, fun and safety up yet another notch!!

I’m anxiously awaiting to see what new idea each of the members bring to the table this year and I’m also very excited to throw a leg over and get some seat time in myself.

2020 is shaping up to be an awesome year for Indianapolis Hog Chapter #1, possibly even record breaking with the “1 million mile challenge” and I’m blessed to be a part of it all. We should have some great rides and even better fellowship during the upcoming season and I hope to share the road with you all.

Till then, let’s try and fill the calendar up with tons of cool rides and events for everybody to enjoy!

Hey All!

If you don’t know me, I am Julie and I have been with the Chapter since 2015 when “hell froze over” and my husband finally bought a Harley! After years of riding behind Bill, I broke down and learned to ride my own three years ago and I now ride a 2017 Softail Slim…and boy is she beautiful. I might even bring her on a Chapter ride one day.

I look forward to compiling all of our events, pictures and stories into this monthly newsletter. Have an idea, suggestion, story or picture? Send it in. Remember, this is your newsletter, I just put everything in one place.

Hi all, I am Lori!

A little bit about myself: I am a proud mommy of 2 cuties - Taylor & Luke. I am a high school Special Education Instructional Assistant at Irvington Prep on the east side of Indy. In my free time I can be found at the baseball field (or excitedly running to and from practices) or out putting around when the weather is to my liking.

I ride a '17 Freewheeler that I bought in January of '18 and have put on a few miles since then - 19,564 to be exact... not that I am counting or anything...ha-ha! I have been a Chapter 1 member since the Spring of '18 (thanks to Rew!!) I have met many amazing people, eaten a lot of yummy food, and seen a lot of cool places because of riding and I am looking forward to even more great memories with Chapter 1. My only regret with riding is that I didn’t start a long time ago. I take full advantage of it when I can and I absolutely love every single minute on my “Baby” (yes, that’s her name because Baby Got Back...ha-ha-ha…get it??)

One of my favorite experiences last year was riding with Rolling Thunder to the Wall for the final time. It was very emotional to say the least and I feel blessed to have been able to ride for the many POW/MIA’s still unaccounted for.

I am excited to be the Awards Officer for 2020 and look forward to the amazing things we will accomplish together! Don't forget we want to reach a million miles as a chapter this year. There is no doubt in my mind that we will achieve this goal! Just bring your miles and Hog# to the chapter meetings (& VIN# if you are not enrolled in 365 yet) and I will take care of the rest! Easy peasy! I know I have met many of you and look forward to meeting those I haven't yet.

Thanks and see you all soon!

And I don't want to die I just want to ride on my motorcycle

“Radar Love’ by the Band Golden Earring.

Music has always been an instrumental part of my life. How clearly I remember the Christmas my parents bought me my first radio - a 8 transistor “Candle” radio strapped in a leather pouch and a single ear plug. Nestled in my bed at night, I’d be listening to all the hits on the AM stations. On a clear night, I could get Chicago and Detroit…sometimes Milwaukee - their big sound and zealous DJ’s streaming their message of Rock and Roll religion through my tiny ear bud now hardwiring to my adolescent brain. I was hooked.

It was “73, the year I got my driver’s license that the song, “Radar Love” burst onto the scene. Now Golden Earring, a Dutch band had been around in various formation since ’61. Their respectable cover of the Byrd’s “Eight Miles High” gave them world wide recognition but to me, “Radar Love” was their break out hit. Of all the riding songs out there, this is THE ONE - my go-to-get-my gear-on-and groove-on-out-of-here song. It’s the breakout call for every anti-hero who is driven without any other purpose but to just FEEL as opposed to just EXIST.

Listening to it in the confines of your bedroom was torture because the temptation to steal your parents car and go off riding down the highway was palatable. A REAL BUMMER! BUT if you heard it while driving….it could be downright dangerous. From the first solid cords to the pulsing drum banging out a steady throbbing like the humming of red hot pistons…like the spinning, spinning…spinning… of very fast wheels….…..syncopated to your heartbeat. And then there’s that voice entering your skull ….wailing over the droning engine like a tortured devil….dueling with guitar licks like the squealing of brakes on a rain soaked highway late at night.

You ever see the cult film, “Vanishing Point”? The original version, please. Watch it. You will catch my drift. Both that film and this song carry you along a journey into the darkness of a maddened driver speeding along with no thought to time or safety. There’s just a single purpose. The end result is devastating to both. One in search of who knows….I could never figure that out… smashes into a bulldozer. The other, so close to home speeds past a dozen slowing cars and…

“Last car to pass here I go

And the line of cars drove down real slow…

And the newsman sang his same song

One more radar love is gone”

Does he make it? Who knows? And its not the point, not really. The song wants you to get lost in the driving sound…endless quickening of heart, flesh and engine. To FEEL.

It’s the quintessential riding song.

Well that’s my thoughts, what’s yours?

What do YOU listen to when you ride? Let DJ HOG know so he can share it next month!

It’s the start to a brand new year. And although our bikes are in the garage more than not, it the time to look forward to what adventures are waiting for us up around the bend. We are lucky, lucky to be part of a group of people who want to be a part of those adventures. Our brothers and sisters of the road…our Chapter family. Like all families there are times that we annoy and aggravate each other. We each have differing opinions on things, we don’t all like doing the same thing (except for riding of course) or like the same cuisine. The thing is, that’s okay. We don’t have to agree on everything, we just have to be respectful and considerate of each other. Pick each other up when needed, and accept a hand when others offer to pick us up. At the end of the day, we are family and family takes care of each other. So let’s look forward to warmer weather, two wheels (or three) on the road, the sun in our faces, the wind in our hair and family adventures galore!
