W&K is celebrating its centenary year after designer James Braid and Harry Vardon officially opened it with an exhibition in 1909.

During WWII, the clifftop/downland course was used as a military HQ and it wasn’t until shortly after its 50th anniversary that it was re-opened. It is plotted on the cliffs between Deal and Dover close to Royal St George’s.

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 72, 6,291 yards Location: 25 miles south of Deal. Normal green fees: Mon-Fri: £32. sat-sun: £40 after 1pm. 2-FORe!-1: Mon-Fri. Tel: 01304 373256. sAVe uP TO: £16

You get the best of both worlds at Whitby – a cracking combination of 11 clifftop and seven parkland holes.

That’s as things stand – because coastal erosion has seen the creation of five new holes since 1993, the last three being added in 2005.

It’s often windy, making the dramatic 6th and 18th holes – where you hit over the Upgang Ravine (crossed by a wooden bridge) very testing.

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 71, 6,106 yards Location: N of town. Normal green fees: Mon: £15. Tues-Fri: £26. 2-FORe!-1: Mon-Fri. Tel: 01947 602719. sAVe uP TO: £13.

Not the longest course but still no stroll in the park.

The undulating terrain and prevailing south westerly winds that regularly rip along this stretch of magnificent North Devon coastline ensure a tough challenge every time.

The course is in great shape 365 days a year and you’ll love the spectacular coastal views.

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 69, 5,596 yards Location: 2 miles e of Ilfracombe. Normal green fees: £20 Mon & Fri. £33 Tues, Wed, Thurs & sun. 2-FORe!-1: Any time in low season. Tel: 01271 862176. sAVe uP TO: £16.50

South Cliff is home to seven breathtaking clifftop holes.

This quirky clifftop-parkland layout, designed by Alister MacKenzie, lies just outside the seaside town.

The clifftop holes all have spectacular views over the town and harbour. The par-5 5th sensationally runs along the cliffs with the North Sea down below and bunkers, trees and gorse on the right.

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 72, 6,647 yards Location: 1 mile s of town. Normal green fees: Mon-Fri: £30. sat-sun: £35. 2-FORe!-1: Mon- Fri & afternoons at weekends. Tel: 01623 360522. sAVe uP TO: £17.50

Bridport & West Dorset, DorsetStunningly located on the World Heritage Jurassic Coast, B&WD is a natural clifftop with amazing views over Lyme Bay, Chesil Beach and the Dorset countryside.

Like The Glen, it will take your breath away and that certainly applies to the par-3 6th which has featured in a top 100 holes in the world listing. Bridport isn’t just about one hole though.

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 70, 5,875 yards Location: Off A35 on B3157. Normal green fees: Mon-Fri: £32. sat-sun: £38. 2-FORe!-1: Any time. Tel: 01308 421095. sAVe uP TO: £19

Forest of Arden (Aylesford Course), WarwicksWhat: Par 69, 5,579 yardsThe Aylesford is a fine foil for the venue’s main attraction, the mighty Arden course. The No.2 layout is a lot shorter, easier and generally friendlier and is always in immaculate condition.Vital statistics: Location: 9 miles west of Coventry off A45. North shore, LincsWhat: Par 71, 5,938 yardsA game of two halves, North Shore – designed by James Braid – is a decent, well established, easy-walking links/parkland track. The only incline on the entire layout is the climb to the uphill penultimate green.Vital statistics: Location: skegness. Normal green fees: Mon-Fri: £31. sat-sun: £39. 2-FORe!-1: Mon-Fri. “Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security and think that clifftop courses are wide open and that you can blast the ball anywhere.

“That’s just not the case because there’s usually plenty of trouble to negate, whether it be the sea or well-placed bunkers – so accuracy off the tee is important.

“Like links golf, you’ve got to try and keep the ball as low as possible, especially if the wind is blowing. You can achieve this by playing the ball a bit further back in your stance and by keeping your wrists a bit firmer.”Whitby Gc head pro Tony Mason

Elsham has been around since 1900 and this tranquil, wooded wonderland is the former home of Open and US Open winner Tony Jacklin.

He lived in the village and played and practised here, where he’s an honorary member. Its narrow fairways and smallish greens are shown well at the 2nd – a sharp dog-leg leading to an undulating green guarded by trees and a stream.

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 73, 6,465 yards Location: 3 miles N of Brigg. Normal green fees: Mon-Fri: £30. 2-FORe!-1: Mon-Fri. Tel: 01652 680291. sAVe uP TO: £15

A splendid heathland with fine views, especially from the breathtaking elevated tee at the stroke index 1 par-4 13th.

Shanklin’s par 3s are pretty special too, with the 143-yard 5th an absolute stunner and the 9th – with its three-tier green – not too far behind.

Another plus point is that because it’s based on free-draining terrain, it very rarely closes due to bad weather.

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 70, 5,803 yards Location: 1 mile off A3055 in Lake. Normal green fees: Mon-Fri: £36. sat-sun: £40. 2-FORe!-1: All week in low season. Tel: 01983 404424. sAVe uP TO: £20

The West has a par of 68 – so is obviously short – and only has one par 5.

There aren’t any bunkers but lots of timber and heather make it a tight test.

Finding the relatively small greens is no easy task and that includes the 11th, a brute of a par 3 with a sloping green. You’ll be happy to walk off this 240-yarder with a bogey!

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 68, 5,606 yards Location: 3 miles south of east Grinstead, off B2110. Normal green fees: Mon-Fri: £29. sat-sun: £34. 2-FORe!-1: Any time after 10am. Tel: 01342 824866. sAVe uP TO: £17

This James Braid gem magically meanders through a colourful assortment of silver birches, gorse and heather.

It’s situated a thumping drive from the coast and being sand-based plays very much like a links with firm, fast-running fairways and slick, true greens. It’s always in tip-top condition too and is playable all-year round. The short holes here are terrific.

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 69, 6,031 yards Location: 2 miles north of Aldeburgh. Normal green fees: Mon-Fri: £40. sat-sun: £45. 2-FORe!-1: Mon-Fri. Tel: 01728 452176. sAVe uP TO: £20

elsham, Lincolnshire

shanklin & sandown, Isle of Wight

Royal Ashdown Forest, east sussex

Thorpeness, suffolk

Crowborough Beacon, east sussexA true classic, Crowborough sits close to the highest point in Sussex at nearly 800ft above sea level and is a mature heathland with stunning South Downs views to match.

The fairways are fairly tight and if you fail to find them you’re likely to end up in penal heather or gorse. Also the greens are pretty speedy, even in low season.

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 71, 6,031 yards Location: 9 miles s of Tunbridge Wells. Normal green fees: Mon-Fri: £56. sat-sun: £66. 2-FORe!-1: Mon-Fri after 9.30am. sat-sun: Any time. Tel: 01892 661511. sAVe uP TO: £33

“It sounds obvious, and is true of most courses, but you must keep the ball on the fairway – as there is no more penal hazard than heather, especially if it’s wet.

“If you do find yourself in trouble, find the shortest and safest route back onto the fairway.

“Another thing you should consider, especially if you’re playing a mature heathland course is that there’s likely to be lots of trouble at the back of the green so running the ball in and up to the flag is usually a good move. So sharpen up your bump-and-runs!”Dennis Newnham, head pro crowborough Beacon

The lethal combination of 100-plus bunkers and eight water features keep golfers of all standards on their toes.

The opener is a daunting 450-yard par 4 where you need to thread your ball between a ditch on the right and houses on the left.

Nearly always in tip-top condition, the course winds its way through mature woodland.

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 72, 6,765 yards Location: North of Macclesfield. Normal green fees: Mon-Thurs: from £25. Fri-sun: from £40. 2-FORe!-1: Any time. Tel: 01625 506013. sAVe uP TO: £20

The James Braid-designed East Course measures 7,400 yards off the championship tees, making it one of Scotland’s longest layouts.

It certainly proved too hot to handle for the US women who suffered an humiliating 11.5-6.5 loss there in the 1992 Solheim Cup.

Admittedly, the East is quite forgiving off the tee but deep bunkers guard the big greens.

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 73, 6,814 yards Location: 7 miles W of edinburgh. Normal green fees: Mon-Thurs: £65. Fri-sun: £80. 2-FORe!-1: Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri. Tel: 0131 333 1845. sAVe uP TO: £40

The Ryder Cup may be making its way down the M4 at Celtic Manor next year, but the Wales National would arguably provide Tiger with a much sterner test!

The Vale Resort’s pride and joy is a brilliant but brute of a layout stretched out over 7,433 yards off the back tips with five water features in play on nine holes.

There’s little respite – even at the short holes!

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 73, 6,576 yards Location: 1 mile from M4 J34. Normal green fees: £50. 2-FORe!-1: Any time. Tel: 01443 665899. sAVe uP TO: £25

If you relish demanding US-style courses, Oake Manor will suit you down to the ground: there’s tonnes of water and bunkers.

A number of lakes, cascades and even a trout stream run through the course, creating water hazards on 10 holes. You twice have to hit over water on the par-5 15th, which virtually has an island green.

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 70, 5,800 yards Location: W of Taunton off B3227. Normal green fees: Mon-Thurs: £26. Fri: £29. sat-sun: £30. 2-FORe!-1: Any time. Tel: 01823 461993. sAVe uP TO: £15

The Players Club, BristolThe Bristol layout is ultra-long with lots of hazards – most of the watery variety.

It’s just over 7,600 yards off the backs, making it the longest course in the land – the 7th and 8th holes can even be combined to create a 700-yard plus hole!

The par-4 3rd involves a double carry over a large lake while the short holes are also mostly protected by water.

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 72, 6,024 yards Location: M4 J18. Normal green fees: Mon-Fri: £45 a round & £70 a day. 2-FORe!-1: Mon-Fri on day rate. Tel: 01454 311818.sAVe uP TO: £35

“Don’t fall into the trap of over-stretching yourself: Avoid taking on a shot you’re unlikely to pull off.

“If you’re tackling a tough course, just play your own game and make use of your shots.

“Just play within yourself and if you’re playing a really difficult par 4 play it as a par 5. Otherwise big scores can happen when you try to do something unrealistic like hit a green 220 yards away with a 3-wood off the deck. Instead, lay up to your favourite yardage with a wedge and the worst you’ll score is a bogey.”Mark Brookes, head pro at The players club

This mini links masterpiece is often buffeted by the wind as the outward nine of the Old Tom Morris design runs close to the cliffs.

You’ve got to put the magnificent Moray Firth views to the back of your mind to tame a series of devilishly difficult par 3s, usually involving the 80ft Boar Crag which overlooks the course. The back nine is at beach level.

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 63, 4,610 yards Location: 5 miles east of Buckie. Normal green fees: Mon-Fri: £22. sat-sun: £25. 2-FORe!-1: Any time. Tel: 01542 840685. sAVe uP TO: £12.50

There’s been a course at Leeds Castle since 1924 when it was created for golf enthusiast owner Lady Baillie.

It’s undergone changes since then, with Tour star Neil Coles making changes to the classy nine-holer. There’s even a par 6. The 6th hole runs beside the moat.

Another star is the par-4 5th – the 435-yarder sees you fire from an elevated tee with the moat and castle as a backdrop.

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 33, 2,681 yards Location: J8 M20. Normal green fees: Mon-Fri: £9 for 9 holes. 2-FORe!-1: Mon-Fri. Tel: 01622 880467. sAVe uP TO: £4.50

This picturesque hilltop course has just 10 holes.

Laid out on a plateau nearly 900ft above sea level with Llyn Tegid, the largest natural lake in Wales, way down below, Bala, also, doesn’t have a single bunker on it.

However, you need to hit it straight and you’re unlikely to find a flat lie on the hilly terrain so you need to be able to deal with hanging lies.

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 66, 4,729 yards Location: south west of Bala, off A494. Normal green fees: £15 Mon-Fri & £20 at weekends. 2-FORe!-1: Any time. Tel: 01678 520359. sAVe uP TO: £10

Quirky Painswick sits 900ft high in beautiful Cotswold country so it’s pretty exposed to the elements and you get lots of hanging lies.

Painswick is all about course management. Do that and you’ll have a ball in the Cotswolds, especially when it comes to the blind tee shot over the ramparts of an ancient fort at the par-3 5th. You also need to take great care on the undulating greens.

ViTal sTaTisTics: Course: Par 67, 4,572 yards Location: N of town. Normal green fees: Mon-Fri: £19. sat-sun: £22. 2-FORe!-1: Mon-sat. Tel: 01452 812180. sAVe uP TO: £11

Orton Meadows, CambridgeshireOrton has two contrasting halves – a demanding outward nine and an easier back nine.

Many front-nine holes are flanked by a huge lake before you head over the Nene Valley Railway to a more traditional parkland test. A succession of par 3s and short par 4s offer sweet moments while the course is usually in good nick and is teeming with wildlife, including lake-loving geese.

“The key to scoring well at short courses is not to underestimate them. Do that, and it’s likely you’ll soon run into trouble.

“Short courses usually have their defences, whether it be water, sand or the elements, so you’ve got to be well prepared for them otherwise you run the risk of coming a cropper.

“Something simple like getting a course guide or asking the pro about the course and its likely trouble spots beforehand could save you a few shots. The more you’re aware of the danger the better. But remember: get complacent and you’re on a loser...”leeds castle professional steve purves

If you’re looking for a great golfing escape far away from the madding crowds, head for Shrigley Hall in deepest Cheshire.

Located in the heart of the delightfully-named village of Pott Shrigley, the course is the handiwork of legendary golf course architect Donald Steel.

It opened 20 years ago and is set in over 260 acres

of picturesque countryside on the edge of the Peak District.

The best vantage point of this idyllic parkland track? Probably from the elevated par-4 13th which provides glorious views across the Cheshire Plains.

Not surprisingly many players get distracted and tend to lose focus in the midst of this tranquility.
