Document the Scope of Work
Before a website development company begins designing and building your website, they should create a basic Scope and Specifications Document with you.
Would you ever consider manufacturing a product without plans?
The document should include technical information, as well as principles that are common to any project:
Project BackgroundCompany background, project description, budget, time frame.
Target AudienceDefine the main users, including their demographics, comfort with technology, and Internet access. Estimate the amount of traffic expected.
Design RequirementsCorporate branding, colors, fonts, images, video.
InfrastructureHosting, mobile, e-commerce, development platform, dealer or staffing portals.
FunctionalityProgramming requirements, data capture, marketing platform integration, content management systems, interactive or unique features.
Maintenance and MarketingWebsite or content updates, marketing plans.
When visitors first come to your website, they are going to make a split-second decision as to whether your company makes the product they are looking for or if you provide the service they need.
Your company only has about 5 seconds to communicate their value through what your website looks like.
If manufacturers do not have a high-quality, consumer-facing site, they are missing a huge opportunity with:
The ultimate purchaser of a product, even if he or she has no direct relationship with the manufacturer. The end user is likely to use the Web to research the products they are considering.
Distributors, retailers, and other channel partners, who need up-to-date, detailed information about the manufacturer's products. Distributing printed datasheets and catalogs, or even e-mailing PDFs, is expensive and inefficient, compared with having everything available in a Web-based repository.

Mobile
Responsive mobile design requires you only have one website that is coded to adapt to all screen sizes, no matter what the device the website is being displayed on.
In contrast, a dedicated mobile design is a template. It is a completely separate website from your main site, requiring you to have a second, mobile-only website or subdomain (ex: http://m.url.com or http://url.com/mobile). Dedicated mobile templates are built for each specific site, not per screen size.

E-commerce
The checkout process should adhere to principles of great design for all e-commerce websites,
A modern e-commerce site must also have a search bar at the top of the site that works. Most products have variables associated with the product number. Make sure that all of these variations are searchable.
Search Bar
