No. 9 — MINNESOTA2012 Exports to China: $3.5 billion; 10-Year Growth, China: 418%; 10-Year Growth, rest of world: 75% The Land of 10,000 Lakes has a sweet spot when it comes to exporting transportation equipment, chemicals and non-electrical machinery to China. Canada is the state’s largest export market with $4 billion worth of goods shipped last year, followed by Germany, which imported $3.8 billion worth. China is Minnesota’s third-largest export market by value. Minnesota exporters can access the St. Lawrence Seaway via Duluth to reach global markets.

No. 8 — OHIO2012 Exports to China: $3.7 billion; 10-Year Growth, China: 344%; 10-Year Growth, rest of world: 57% Soybeans, corn and other agriculture products grown in the Buckeye State are finding their way to Chinese plates and livestock feeding bins. Agriculture exports to China hit $1.1 billion in value, while outbound shipments of non-electrical machinery came to $511 million and transportation equipment reached $399 million. Canada is Ohio’s top export market, with $19.5 billion in imports from the state in 2012, followed by Mexico, which imported $5 billion worth of goods. China is the state’s third-largest export market.

No. 7 — MICHIGAN2012 Exports to China: $3.7 billion; 10-Year Growth, China: 743%; 10-Year Growth, rest of world: 63% It should come as no surprise that the home of the motor city is a major exporter of transportation equipment to China, with outbound shipments totaling $1.6 billion last year. Agriculture exports of $453 million and non-electrical machinery shipments of $362 million helped make China the state’s third-largest export market. Canada took the top spot with $25 billion of imports from Michigan, followed by Mexico, with $10.6 billion.

No. 6 — GEORGIA2012 Exports to China: $3.8 billion; 10-Year Growth, China: 443%; 10-Year Growth, rest of world: 105% Georgia exporters are fortunate to have the largest Southeast container port in their state, which helped them ship $797 million worth of transportation equipment, $681 million worth of paper products and $553 million in agriculture goods to China. Robust exports of non-electrical machinery, and waste and scrap, made China the Peach State’s 2nd largest export market last year. Canada was Georgia’s top export market, with the United States’ northern neighbor importing $6.4 billion worth of goods from the state in 2012.

No. 5 — NEW YORK2012 Exports to China: $4.2 billion; 10-Year Growth, China: 192%; 10-Year Growth, rest of world: 89% One state’s waste and scrap is another country’s valuable import. That’s the case in New York, which exported $1.2 billion worth of waste and scrap to China in 2012. The Empire State also exported $732 million worth of transportation equipment and $723 million in non-electrical machinery to the Asian giant. Despite the healthy exports, China is only New York’s sixth-largest export market. Canada takes the top spot, followed by Hong Kong, Switzerland and the U.K.

No. 4 — ILLINOIS2012 Exports to China: $6.2 billion; 10-Year Growth, China: 422%; 10-Year Growth, rest of world: 140% The Land of Lincoln served up $2.4 billion worth of agriculture exports to China in 2012, helping to make the country the state’s third-largest export market. Illinois also exported $743 million in non-electrical machinery, as well as $589 million in waste and scrap, to China last year.

No. 3 — WASHINGTON2012 Exports to China: $7.9 billion; 10-Year Growth, China: 239%; 10-Year Growth, rest of world: 89% Washington’s top export to China in 2012 was transportation equipment, with $4.9 billion worth of machinery shipped to the Asian giant. Seattle’s tech hub helped contribute about $534 million worth of exports to China. The Port of Seattle also was a major gateway for the $430 million in waste and scrap, $337 million in primary metal manufacturing products and $315 million in forestry products to China. Canada was the state’s top export market, with $8.2 billion in imports, followed by China.

No. 2 — Texas2012 Exports to China: $10.1 billion; 10-Year Growth, China: 229%; 10-Year Growth, rest of world: 170% Everything in Texas is big, including the state’s exports to China. The Lone Star state in 2012 exported to $3.7 billion in chemicals, and $1.4 billion in computers and electronics to China. Considering its proximity, it’s no surprise Mexico is the state’s top export market, followed by Canada and China.

No. 1 — CALIFORNIA2012 Exports to China: $13.6 billion; 10-Year Growth, China: 156%; 10-Year Growth, rest of world: 69% Hollywood-produced movies might be California’s top culture export, but the state’s outbound shipments of computers and electronics, waste and scrap, and non-electrical machinery are blockbusters in their own right. Mexico is the state’s top export market, with $29.2 billion imports, followed by Canada, which imported $17.5 billion worth of California-produced goods last year. China was the Golden State’s third-largest export market in 2012.
