Every major manufacturer evolved their product and service offering in 2015 – but new products are only as meaningful as the connected, frictionless experiences they provide. We saw a renewed interest and commitment in the health and wellness space to push the needle forward and make 2016 the year of connecting the disconnected.

02 FASHION Fashion took center stage at CES 2016. From smart jewelry maker WISEWEAR to the new men’s clothing line by Samsung, everyone is looking to capitalize on the quantified self trend. Most data being captured continues to revolve around personal health and fitness goals – with a handful of devices adding GPS tracking to their product lines for personal security monitoring. There was recognition that any wearable device needs to look good to have a chance of widespread adoption.

03 FITNESS Fitness trackers continue to be a hot item in the consumer marketplace. The $199 Fitbit Blaze is hoping to take some market share away from the $349 Apple Watch while Under Armour is launching a 5 in 1 bundle of products called HEALTHBOX. By creating a self-contained ecosystem, Under Armour has developed a proprietary dashboard called UA Record that provides its community of users a continuous feedback loop, machine learning, personal targets, recommendations, and of course brand loyalty.

Industry leader Withings announced the new Thermo device and accompanying mobile app providing simple one-click access to send relevant data to ones physician. Remote monitoring has garnered considerable attention due to the increased number of individuals identifying themselves as primary caregivers for their elderly parents and other loved ones.

From sleep aids like the new it bed by Sleep Number to devices that manage chronic pain like Quell to wearable medical alerts that announce when someone has “fallen and they can’t get u.” We’ve reached an mHealth tipping point. To be successful, these devices need to connect to a larger ecosytem. The critical question to ask now is “will my users use it” and not simply “can they use it”

06 3D PRINTING 3D printers of all shapes and sizes were pumping out objects of all shapes and sizes. The focus was on manufacturing, but these machines are already being used in healthcare - e.g., printing replacement body parts, tissue and medicines. The future could involve printing your own medicines at home and cutting the pharmacist out of the equation.

The focus was mainly around recreation, aerial video and photography. 08 AUGMENTED & VIRTUAL REALITY VR booths dominated the exhibits with attendees waiting over an hour in line to get a chance to experience the latest innovations from Samsung Gear and Oculus Rift. This space continues to promise disruption in nearly every category; social, gaming, entertainment and health. VR was discussed at length during the Digital Health Summit where applications included chronic pain management, PTSD relief, mindfulness, as well as gamification for children with ADHD.

The healthcare industry will certainly be watching this industry with keen interest as these incredible new vehicles begin to pop up at a car dealer near you.
