l. S iesta beach is lo-cated on Beach Road on Siesta Key. Siesta Beach is known as one of

the most beautiful beaches anywhere in the world. At the “Great International White Sand Beach Challenge” held in 1987, it was recognized as having the “whitest and finest sand in the world.” The powdery sand is nearly pure quartz crystal. The beautiful blue-colored water is clean and clear, making it so inviting to bathers and swim-mers. The beach is hundreds of yards wide, attracting volley-ball players and beachcomb-ers as well as those who just want to find their place in the sun. Waves at Siesta Beach are normally measured in inches and the beach gradu-ally slopes into the Gulf waters, making it a very safe area for children. Unlike beaches else-

where that are made up mostly of coral, Siesta Beach’s sand is 99% quartz. Even on the hottest days, the sand is so reflective that it feels cool underfoot. It’s estimated that the sand on Siesta Beach and Crescent Beach on Siesta Key is mill ions of years old, and started in the Appalachians and flowed down the rivers and was eventually deposited on the shores of Siesta Key. Shallow water depth in the near shore area together with year round lifeguard pro-tection, makes this one of the safest beaches in the County and great for small children. Lifeguards are on duty year round. The lifeguard stands have been painted in primary colors to make it easier to keep track of where you and your children are. The stands are yellow, blue, green. Siesta Key Beach also of-fers special needs visitors help via these free beach “wheel-

chairs.” Be sure to look for one near the main parking lot walkover. Two concession stands are available at the beach for food and souvenirs. If “beach grub” like burgers, dogs, etc. isn’t for you, it’s about 2 miles to Siesta Village to the north where there is a wide variety of restaurants and bars to choose from. Every-thing from lobster to subs and sandwiches to Japanese food. There’s also a small supermarket in the vil lage with an excellent deli counter offering both hot and cold foods. If you’re at the south end of Siesta Beach, known as Crescent Beach, there are several places nearby for lunch and dinner in the Stick-

ney Point Road area and south along Midnight Pass Road. and red. It is designed to cut down on the problem of lost children. Make sure your children know which stand you are near. Feel free to bring your cooler and food to the beach. There are lots of picnic ta-bles and some picnic shel-ters available. Some of the shelters can accommodate large groups and can be re-served in advance. It is legal to drink alco-holic beverages on Sarasota County beaches, but please, no glass containers. When you’re planning your trip to beach, buy plastic or alumi-num only. Public beaches in Sarasota County are also non-smoking.

SMALL SURF, SLOPING SAND, AND YEAR ROUND LIFE GUARDS.“

“C oronado is Span-

ish for “the crowned one,” and thus it is nicknamed The

Crown City. Gently sloping sand, small surf and year-round life-guards make Coronado Beach great for kids. Tired of water? Bike, rollerblade, go shopping or try the ice cream at Hotel del Coronado. North Coronado Beach is less busy, but further from restrooms and noisier, with air-planes landing overhead. Just

north of the hotel, you’ll find a clump of small sand dunes - look closely and you’ll see that they spell C-O-R-O-N-A-D-O. Coronado Beach is on Coronado Island, across the bay from downtown San Diego. From I-5, take the Coronado Bay Bridge exit and go over the bridge. Turn left at the first traffic l ight onto Orange Av-enue. You will find some street parking near the Hotel del Coronado and an underground parking garage to the right of Orange Avenue just before

you get to the hotel. There’s also a public lot just before the highrise apart-ment

buildings. Don’t let the signs here fool you. They make it look like it’s a private lot, but it isn’t. Turn-of-the-century mansions front the ocean, while yacht clubs line the bay. The town offers numer-ous parks with impeccably-maintained facilities, the entire beach is patrolled by lifeguards and, from the town skateboard park to upscale dining, there’s plenty to do in Coronado when you’re done at the beach. Plan to make a day of it. It’s essentially one big beach from here south to the Mexican border, arbitrarily divided into individual spots. Don’t expect to find any lines drawn in the sand, though; there’s no territorialism here. In fact, you’ll probably find no friendlier or more welcoming spot. Within Coronado, there are three such distinct zones. The first is North Beach, from Sunset Park to the North Island Naval Base. The coastline faces due south here, and in the summer hur-ricane season, when steep-angle south swells miss the rest of San Diego, ‘Outlet’ is the place to be for surf. It’s a sanctioned hangout for dogs

and has a dozen fire rings nestled up against the dunes. The main area front-ing Ocean Boulevard to the south end of the world-fa-mous Hotel Del Coronado is referred to as Central Beach. Park wherever you can and make your way to one of the many accessways, or just scramble over the boulders to the sand. Central Beach tends to get the most crowd-ed, but with the grand old hotel at your back and wait-ers serving drinks to guests on the boardwalk, it’s also the most romantic. There’s a small rock outcropping in front of the hotel, but if you keep to either side, it doesn’t present any real swimming hazards. The large beach area south of the Hotel Del to Silver Strand is called The Shores. Its more southwest-erly exposure offers a fun, year-round beachbreak per-fect for longboarding and bodyboarding. Don’t be in-timidated by the imposing high-rise condominium tow-ers. There are plenty of public access right-of-ways leading to the beach at The Shores, even if the parking here is fairly scarce.

NAMED AFTER LEGENDARY OLYM-PIC GOLD MEDALIST SWIM-MER DUKE PAOA KAHANAMOKU“

“K ahanamoku Beach is immedi-ately adjacent to the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor and the

Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon. It is the widest beach in Waikiki and an offshore protective reef makes it a good beach for families with children. Swim-mers should wear reefwalkers or some other protective foot-wear because the shoreline in this area has a rocky bot-tom. Kahanamoku beach is a popular swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and sailing beach and it is also home of the Port

Hilton Dock where the Atlantis submarine tours and dinner cruises depart. Public access to Kahanamoku Beach is via Kalia Road and Pahoa Place. You would find the beauti-ful coconut palm trees lining on the beach and beautiful parks adding to the grandeur of the mesmerizing area. Named after a legendary Olympic gold medalist swim-mer Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, the Kahanamoku Beach offers you diverse cultures and a col-orful history to explore. If you go for a side walk along with the beach, you will

see the visi-tors and lo-cals tak-ing ad-van-tage of fan-tas-tic Ha-

waiian views. Kahanamoku Beach has a shallow offshore reef, which protects you from big waves. It is a safe beach for families, couples, and kids. Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy numerous activities in the beach area. There are vast adventure activities to ex-plore. You can go swimming, sailing, snorkeling, canoeing, kayaking, and surfing in the sparkling Pacific waters and sunbathe on the scintil lating beach. You can even go for Atlantis Submarine tours with your family and friends. Ka-hanamoku Beach is also a great place for a picnic be-

cause of its grassy area and palm trees. The main attrac-tion of Kahanamoku Beach is a fireworks show called ‘’ Kings Jubilee’’ organized ev-ery Friday by the city of Ho-nolulu. You would be glad to witness the torch lighting cer-emony here, which is a great sight to watch. Another attraction in Oahu is Kapiolani Park. It is the site of historical Diamond Head, the Honolulu Zoo, and the Waikki Shell, which hosts many outdoor shows and concerts. They offer art shows and craft shows on weekends to entertain visi-tors. You can even find soccer fields, tennis courts, archery range, and a jogger’s course here. If you are a sports lover, this is the best place to be in. Situated next to a liv-ing reef on the shoreline of Waikiki is the must-see Waiki-ki Aquarium. You can explore 420 species of aquatic ani-mals and plants there. It is a great sight for kids and adults alike. Your kids will have a great time watching the rich marine life of the area. The wonderful hues of dusk fade from Sunset Beach are a must-see sight

that will captivate your inner senses. You would fall in love with the rich nightlife on the beach, sitting under the twin-kling stars beside the silent shore waters. You would love to ex-plore the grand shopping and art galleries of Down-town Honolulu. If you want to buy something for your loved ones, Waikiki is right place. You can buy souvenirs, clothing, and inexpensive jewelry from the international marketplace of Hawaiiana. There are numerous designer boutiques on Kalakaua Av-enue. If you want to buy lux-ury brands, the DPS Galleria Hawaii offers you duty free shopping. The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center Mall is an-other chic place to use your shopping skills.

HATTERAS ISLAND CALLS OUT TO THE ADVENTURER IN ALL OF US“

“H atteras Island is the

perfect combination of natural world and vaca-

tion world. If you love being outdoors and in the natural world, you will love it on Hatteras Island. It feels like a real island retreat. Its vibe is much different from the northern Outer Banks even though it has many of the same vacation offerings. But Cape Hatteras on the whole has a much more laid-back at-titude, probably due to its pop-ularity with outdoorsy types and the water sports crowd. It’s more relaxed, a little simpler and definitely slower paced. Hatteras recreation proves to be a magnet for those who love surfing, kite boarding, wind surfing, bird-ing, paddling, camping, scuba diving and the beach, for many reasons — mild temperatures for about nine months of the year, abundant and accessible ocean and sound beaches and numerous outfitters. Of course, the fact that about 75 percent of Hatteras Island is in its nearly natural barrier island state thanks to Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, impressive sand dunes, wide beaches, thick maritime forest and vast marshlands plays a big role in this outdoor, eco-

friendly orientation. Taking part in the world famous Hatteras fishing is front and center of what people, locals and visitors alike, do here to be happy. Hatteras attractions are connected to the roots of the island’s history, which includes shipwrecks and the lighthouse that tried to warn them off, the Native Americans who loved this land first, the industry that grew around fishing. Cape Hatteras is l ike any other island in this respect. Its Atlantic Ocean beaches, Pam-lico Sound marshes and unde-veloped sandscapes call to the weary soul in all of us, promis-ing breath-taking sunrises as a respite for strained eyes, heal-ing salt air to purify stale lungs, and warm sand to soften hard-ened soles. Hatteras Island calls out to the adventurer in all of us, enticing us with tales of surf-ing a storm-induced swell, riding the wind with a kite and a board and battling a blue marlin the size of a small bus. Hatteras calls to the naturalist in all of us, luring us in to see brown pelicans belly-skimming the ocean surface, sea turtle tracks etched into the beach, and dolphins arcing their point-ed fins in the sea. Hatteras Island is the perfect combination of natural

world and vacation world. More than 60 percent of the island is in its almost-natural barrier island state, thanks to the pro-tection of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. More than half of the island is open land or cultural sites wait-ing to be explored. The rest of Cape Hatteras caters to visitors with hotels and motels, rental homes from the luxurious to the simple, restaurants from family style to upscale contemporary, locally owned shops offering just about everything you could need and recreation opportuni-ties for everyone. If Hatteras Island is intrigu-ing for what it offers today, it is even more so because of its past. Hatteras’s history speaks of the sea, of l ighthouses, ship-wrecks on the island’s infamous shoals, the lifesaving efforts of courageous locals and the island’s vulnerability in times of war. It speaks of islanders liv-ing in what sounds like an idyllic setting with gardens and live-stock and the bounty of the sea but what was really a struggle in the face of hurricanes and the hardships of isolation. The stories of Hatteras’s past are so rich and colorful that it’s a shame no single book will ever be able to contain them.

S t. George is a bar-rier island, 28 miles (45 km) long and 2 miles (3 km) wide at its widest point.

St. George Island is adjacent to Cape St. George Island. The island is separated from the mainland by a four-mile (6 km) long bridge across Apalachic-ola Bay, connecting to East-point, Florida. Nearby towns include Eastpoint, Carrabelle and Apalachicola. St. George Island is informally divided into three regions: Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park, a public strip of restau-rants, bars, small businesses, homes and public beach, and a private and gated, highly exclusive housing community complete with its own airstrip. It is in this community that some of the most expensive multi-mill ion dollar beach homes on the Gulf of Mexico are located. The island is known for being quiet and tranquil due to its small size. Many occupants of the island rent out their homes during the spring and summer months. As of 2008,

the island has no central sew-age system and receives very little funding for road and infra-structure improvements, lead-ing some to believe the island should form its own special taxing district. Saint George Island is said to be one of the most expensive islands on the Gulf to rent or own, and many purchase land on the island as an investment. A typical plot of land can range from $300,000 to $10,000,000.[citation need-ed] St. George Island State Park occupies the eastern nine miles (14 km) of the is-land. People can camp there as well as swim with reserva-tions. Many fishing reserva-tions are also available in the area. The park has a series of hiking trails, boardwalks and observation platforms. Bird watching is a popular activity there. The area is well known for its excellent variety of Apalachicola Bay and Gulf of Mexico fish and seafood in-cluding oysters, scallops, grou-per, flounder, redfish, snapper, trout, mullet and others.

try’s most beautiful barrier islands. Located between the Bohicket River and the ocean, the park features a wide board-walk that weaves through live oaks, pines, palmettos, and yucca plants. Originally pur-chased in 1951 by the Royal family of Aiken for $125,000. Amenities include a picnic area, snack bar, beach access, restrooms, dressing areas, showers, and various beach rentals. Seasonal. Kiawah Island is a popular tourist spot, with golf courses, high-end resort, and vacation rentals. The island -- just 1.5 miles wide at its widest point, and 10 miles long-- has miles of beach, dunes, lagoons and marsh. Beachwalker Park is a public access beach -- the only public beach access on Ki-awah Island-- with a designated swimming area (lifeguarded in summer), picnic area, and seasonal snack bar and beach chair rentals. Visitors can also enjoy boardwalks that weave through live oaks and other trees. As the park is located on a barrier island it is in continual geological movement. The only pubic beach on

Kiawah Island is found in this park. There are fees for the entry of motor vehicles only. The park is closed from No-vember through February. In March, April and October it is open only on weekends, from 10 AM to 6 PM. The hours are extended between May and La-bor Day, when the park is open daily from 9 AM to 7 PM. In September it is open daily but from 10 AM to 6 PM only. There are seasonal Life-guards stationed to watch over a 450 ft. wide area that is des-ignated for ocean swimming. These lifeguards are certified by the United States Life Sav-ing Association (USLA). They are not responsible for swim-mers outside of the designat-ed swimming area. Beach chairs and um-brellas are rented in the busy season and a snack bar is also open only in the busy months. There is a boardwalk that moves through a forest of l ive oaks, pines and palmettos as well as other flora. There are 18 species of mammals living here as well as 30 species of reptiles and am-phibians, the largest of which are alligators and sea turtles. The 190 types of fowl that are found here include several birds of prey as well as Brown Pelicans. Interpretive guides are available for bird watching walks in the park.

B eautiful Coast Guard Beach in Eastham is a spit attached to erod-ing glacial cliffs.

A historic old Coast Guard Station stands watch over the top of the large dune overlook-ing the beach. Hiking down the beach spit heading south you can see Nauset Marsh to your right, which is habitat for fish, shellfish, shore birds, wading birds, and waterfowl. At the end of the spit is Nauset Inlet, which leads to Town Cove in Orleans. This is a great place to bird watch, view harbor seals, or fish for striped bass or bluefish from the shore. Coast Guard Beach is part of the Cape Cod National Sea-shore. Coast Guard Beach is one of the best surfing beach-es on the Cape, due in part to the sand bars that form off the

shoreline from the current that draws water into Nauset Inlet. It is also a prime swimming beach. Coast Guard Beach is a favorite for people of all ages. It is often recognized as one of the top 10 on various lists of America‎s best beaches, com-parable to the best of Hawaii and Florida. Seasonal public rest-rooms and showers are avail-able at the beach, and a ramp from the parking lot makes it handicapped accessible. The beach has lifeguards. From mid-June to Labor Day, the parking lot at this location is closed, and access is provided by shuttle bus from the Little Creek parking area (across from the Doane Area). Al-though the parking lot at Coast Guard Beach is open the re-mainder of the year, parking is l imited.

T his classic Ha-waiian beach on Oahu’s eastern shore is a great place

for a long beach walk along Waimanalo Bay followed by a swim in the mostly pro-tected, turquoise waters. Waimanalo Bay is Oahu’s longest beach stretching for more than 5 miles along the windward shore from Wailea Point to Makapuu, and with great views of the majestic Koolau moun-tains. Great for sunbathing, beach walks, swimming when the waves are not too big. Be cautious when swimming offshore be-cause the ocean gets deep-er quite quickly and strong currents sometimes run along the shoreline. Like nearby Waimanalo Beach Park, this beach can get a bit crowded on weekends but there is plenty of room on weekdays. Watch all valuables closely and don’t leave valuable items in your car. Waimanalo Bay Rec-reation Area is one place

rarely visited by tourists, that has one of the Oahu Beaches that will leave you in awe of the fact that you had no idea it existed in Oahu. Waimanalo beach on a sunny day is jaw-drop-pingly drop dead gorgeous - turquoise blue waters and miles of some of the soft-est white sand your will toes will ever touch! Waimanalo is located on the southeastern cor-ner of Oahu , and com-monly known as the Paniolo (rancher/cowboy) countryside. And without knowing the beauty of its perfectly turquoise blue shoreline, you might pass right through the small town and never realize what you missed.
