Description of Program
Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
Many victims who receive BLS need an AED
An AED should be used with a victim who has no signs of circulation
The AED may restart a normal heartbeat
Access to AEDs
Available in many workplaces, public gathering places, and other facilities
For use by trained rescuers and first aiders
A healthcare provider usually oversees placement and use of the AED
AED training must meet certain requirements
Using an AED
Whenever a victim suddenly collapses or is found unresponsive consider possibility of cardiac arrest
Send someone to get an AED immediately
It is better to have it right away and not need it, than to need it and have to wait for it
How AEDs Work
Ventricular fibrillation is an abnormal heart rhythm that does not circulate blood
A shock from the AED may restore a regular rhythm—called defibrillation
Time Is Important
AEDs are easy and simple to use but must be used right away
With every minute that goes by, the chances for survival drop by 10%
AED
Portable
Two pads connected to it with cables
Pads placed on the victim’s chest
Unit analyzes victim’s heart and advises whether to give a shock
All AEDs work in the same basic way
Turn AED on first
Follow placement
