HIPZ

Health Improvement Project Zanzibar (HIPZ) is a UK-reg-

istered charity established in 2006 by Mr Ru MacDonagh,

a consultant urological surgeon, based in the UK. Ru had

previously worked in East Africa and Zanzibar, and has

been approached by the Principal Secretary of Zanzibar’s

Ministry of Health, to help improve healthcare at a hospital

in the south of the island. This led to a unique partnership

with the Zanzibar Government, resulting in a healthcare

improvement in Zanzibar, through fundraising in the UK.

Thanks to a hard work and persistence of Dr. Feroz Jafferji,

a dentist and old friend of HIPZ, a fully functioning dental

clinic is now operational in Kivunge Hospital, Zanzibar.

Zanzibar is an archipelago made up of Zanzibar and

Pemba Islands, and several islets. It is located in the

Indian Ocean, about 40km from the Tanzanian coast, and

6° south of the equator. Zanzibar is an island state within

the United Republic of Tanzania, and has its own semi-au-

tonomous government. Zanzibar Island (known locally as

Unguja, but as Zanzibar internationally) is 90km long and

30km wide. It is characterised by beautiful sandy beaches

with fringing coral reefs, and the magic of historic Stone

Town – said to be the only functioning ancient town in

East Africa. There are no large wild animals in Zanzibar,

2

and forest areas such as Jozani are inhabited by monkeys,

bush-pigs and small antelopes. Various species of mon-

goose can also be found on the island. There is a wide

variety of birdlife, and a large number of butterflies in rural

areas. The coral reefs that surround the East Coast are rich

in marine diversity, and make Zanzibar an ideal location

for snorkelling and scuba diving. Zanzibar’s local people

are an incredible mixture of ethnic backgrounds, indica-

tive of her colourful history. Islam is the dominant religion,

and practiced by most Zanzibaris, although there are also

followers of Christianity and Hinduism. Population is esti-

mated at 1,303,569, with the largest concentration being

Zanzibar City. Zanzibaris speak Swahili (known locally as

Kiswahili), a language which is spoken extensively in East

Africa.

Zanzibar

Fishing and agriculture are the main economic activities

of the local people. Zanzibar was once the world’s largest

producer of cloves, and her economy was based on large

incomes thus derived. Although cloves are still a major ex-

port along with coconut products and spices, tourism has

been earmarked as the primary foreign exchange earner,

with more visitors coming to Zanzibar each year. -De-

spite the seemingly perfect environment in Zanzibar, life

is tough. 1 in every 15 infants die, often from preventable

causes. 1 in 325 Zanzibari women die in childbirth. At

whole island of Zanzibar there are around 800,000

people and only four dentists. In comparison to Vienna,

Austria, where more than 1.500 dentists handle around 1.7

million of patients.
