Arnhem-Nijmegen plays an importmant role on (inter)national road transportation.

Problem 1: New economic clusters will locate along the highway, which will lead to more private car use.

Problem 2: Arnhem south center area is distance from the nearest railway station.

Solution:Arnhem-Nijmegen City Region will devel-opment follow the S-shape. The green field of the in-between area will be preserved. At the intersection of Highway A15 and A325, this area could be the energy production area.

At the meantime, the public transport and bike service will hep with the traffic intensity of Arnhem.

The mixed-use with residential, commer-cial, cultural and social activities, could make these neighborhoods the centre of Arnhem south. This area could provide much more than a weekend shopping cen-tre for the city in 2050.

Location: Rotterdam, Netherlands

Date: 2011

Genre: Urban Design

Planning period:2011--2016

Key words: Urban regeneration, Waterfront

Description:Rotterdam is the second-largest city in the Neth-erlands and one of the largest ports in the world. During World War II, following Hitler’s bombing Rotterdam on May 14 1940, the heart of Rotter-dam was almost completely destroyed.

Rotterdam was gradually rebuilt from the 1950s through the 1970s. Since 1980, daring and new styles of apartments, office buildings and rec-reation facilities resulted in a more ‘livable’ city centre with a new skyline.

Aim:The main aim is to regenerate the waterfront in the centre area of Rotterdan Blaak by 2016. No longer hidden behind the shops, more activities and public spaces will be added on the buildings around the canal.

The public places around the canal are ide-al for people sitting down for a café. They are divided into several areas for different types of function. The area near the Cathe-dral will hold main events. The area near the east part of the canal will be pubs and/or café square, and the area on the west will be cultural square, for the cinema and theater around it.

Introduction

Location: Kemerovo, Russia

Date: 2011

Genre: Urban Design, Architecture

Planning period:2011--2020

Key words: Urban regeneration, Historic building re-new

Description:Kemerovo region is on the south of Siberia, Russia, and Kemerovo city is the capital of this region. Coal and heavy industry are the essen-tial part of this area. Kransnaya Gorka became the initial place where the coal of the Kuznetsk Basin was discovered. A significant moment in the development of the coal mining industry was the founding of the Au-tonomous Industrial Colony (AIK) in 1922 by the Dutch communist Sebald Rutgers. Today the re-mains of the 1920’s are still there but declined or unrecognizably transformed. Their context in urban or landscape setting is no longer there.

Aim:This project entails research by design and analysis of both history and development poten-tials of a specific area. In this case, it regards the change of the public realm, the work of a well-known Dutch architect abroad and value assessment of ‘Mutual Dutch-Russian heritage’ in Kemerovo.

J.B.van Loghem designed several dwell-ings for the specialists of AIK, in an en-semble with Rutger’s house on the em-bankment. He introduced innovative ideas of functionalist architecture characteristic for 1920’s Netherlands.

Today the remains of the 1920’s are still there but declined or unrecognizably transformed. Their context in urban or landscape setting is no longer there.

Museum Route is the crucial line that con-nects all the cultural buildings in Krasnaya Gorka.

Since Rutger’s house is one of the most importmant historic building on the north bank, and the museum route goes through it. The renewal design takes it into ac-count, the joint between the historic part and the extension part serves the whole building and also the route.

Ancient theatre

Concept

The ancient Greek theater used the height difference as the auditorium; the campus theater does the same, for its location is on a hill.

The stage volume is not parallel to the audi-torium, this creates three different audience areas for different purpose, the main audi-torium, the cinema and the outdoor audi-ence area, they all share the same stage/ office building.

Plan

Location: Guangzhou, Guangdong, China

Date: 2008

Genre: Architecture

Key words: Pubic space, Theatre

Description:This project locates in an University campus. The site is on the hill and facing a playground. The theatre includes stage, auditorium, rehears-al, exhibition, cinema and other ancillary facili-ties.
