This image features numerous colours which clash with one another. However, this image makes use
of each colour amazingly well and none look out of place, the lighting used in the image is extremely
bright artificial lighting from the floodlights in the arena. The image has great energy to it and gives the
feeling of immense atmosphere due to everybody reaching out for the player (well known/famous) who
is opening his arms in embrace of them; this gives the feeling of togetherness and a community sense,
there is a clear connection and it is what our eyes our immediately drawn to as he is centre of the
image and everybody is looking towards him. There is also a very strong feeling of patriotism amongst
the English audience as the player is an English national sports player and this could trigger strong and
emotional feelings for people who are passionate about their country and/or sport, also more so as the
image has been caught in the moment where nothing is staged, it tells a story.
This image has clearly been caught in the moment and everybody in the image is showing their initial
reactions to the event that is taking place before them. Bright, artificial lighting is being used from the
floodlights in the stadium that they are playing in. The photo has been taken with a high shutter speed
because it is capturing a moment of movement. There is a fairly narrow depth of field with the footballer
Ronaldo being the most in focus in the whole shot. This image has been caught by chance but also
includes two of the most famous footballers in the world/of all time and so this image would be used
and instantly catch peoples attention because of the players that are featured in it.
The photo has been taken at the famous Olympic Stadium in London with nobody else in it besides
from the man (wearing clearly labelled sportswear) featured in the image which could symbolise that
this is his moment and this is all for him and as he is so focused on his task he is not giving us direct
address. There is both natural lighting from the blue sky which brightens the image and the blue and
white from the sky contrast with the athlete and make him stand out, and artificial lighting used to
brighten the mans body and face to make him stand out more in the image. There is a broad depth of
field and so we can tell that the image is clearly staged as everything is in focus and using a low angle
shot makes the athlete appear important and powerful which are the connotations that we would
associate with this man who is said to be ‘the fastest man on no legs’.
The reasoning behind why I like this photo so much is simply because of how simple yet effective it is.
There are two dominant colours in the image rather than dozens and these two colours are black and
white and they contrast beautifully, they also allow the audience to clearly see what is featured in the
image as it is bold and easy to notice because of this contrasting colour scheme, they are achieved
through the artificial lighting from the spotlights above the two people. The image has a broad depth of
field as everything is in focus. The main feature in this image are two people fencing under numerous
spotlights, once again, the audience’s eyes are immediately drawn to these people because of the
colour scheme and this works really well as these people who are fencing are photographed in an
action shot of them performing their sport and I think that this really captures the beauty of the image as
it is caught in the moment of the sport, no direct address is being given which shows that the two
athletes are very focused on what they are doing.
This is another great photo by Tom Jenkins because I think it shows so much emotion. For example,
the women look as if they are at a horse race. So it suggests that a horse or a jockey has taken a
serious fall and the shocked faces that they are pulling show their utter dismay. Also in the background
of the photo you can see other people are just as shocked. The women are terribly shocked in the
foreground whereas the men in the background do not seem too concerned with whatever it is that has
happened. The use of a narrow depth of field gives this photo a more focused feel. It is a narrow depth
of field because the only things fully in focus are the two old women at the front of the photo. This
image also uses low contrast natural lighting. Also this is a very clear and high quality image because
everything is smooth and in full detail.
