On February 29th, 2008, Prime

Ministers Stephen Harper and

Milan Topolanek were meeting in

Toronto at the St. Wenceslas

Church. Tom was catering the event

and Kristina just happened to be

there to have pictures taken with

the Prime Ministers. They caught

each other’s eye early on in the

evening and, after some harmless

flirting, exchanged phone numbers.

Tom gave Kristina a box of delicious

pastries and won her heart over.

A day later, Kristina went to The

Prague to ‘get some dumplings’ and

see Tom again.

Unfortunately, both were seeing

other people at the time and it took

a few months before they saw each

other again.

In early June, Kristina had a photo-

shoot nearby and stopped in at the

restaurant only to find out that she

and Tom were both going to Europe

on the same day! Unfortunately,

they did not get to meet up while

they were there. However, two days

after they got back, they met up at

Czech and Slovak Canada Day at

Masaryktown on June 21st -

Midsummer Night. Along with a

large bon fire and a spectacular full

moon, love was in the air. She and

Tom spent the whole night getting

to know each other. This was their

first night as a couple and although

Kristina moved to Ottawa two

weeks later, they made it through

the long-distance relationship. Six

months later, Kristina relocated

back to Toronto, and moved in with

Tom.

The Proposal

Tom chose the perfect time and

day to propose - the one day I

would not have expected him to do

so. It was a complete surprise.

Monday, June 21st, 2010, the day

after the Miss Czech and Slovak

Canada Pageant where I won as

First Vice Miss, all my thoughts

were still on the excitement of the

day before. It was also our two-

year anniversary, so when he came

into the room with wine and a

present, I didn’t think anything so

big would be coming my way. The

present was a white wedding

garter, with which he explained

that he wanted me to know that he

was being serious about proposing

soon, ‘but he couldn’t afford the

ring yet’. I laughed it off, put the

garter aside, and when I looked

back, there he was with the box,

inside was the ring. I was so

shocked, and Tom is such a joker,

that I couldn’t believe it was

happening until he actually spoke

the words. Of course I said yes

immediately. Then after a sudden

emotional burst of laughing and

crying, we called up my family and

shared the exciting news - Tom’s

family found out in the morning.

That whole week was spent

celebrating. Tuesday we went for a

nice dinner together, Wednesday

and Thursday we met up with

friends, and on Friday, Tom took

me to see a ballet performance of

Onegin

The Crest

The vines that surround the

crest form a heart shape, which

was completely devised by

Claire, but now that I think

about it, it can be very symbolic

of our joint love for nature.

The banner, ‘Per aspera ad

a s t r a ’ m e a n s ‘ T h r o u g h

hardships to the Stars’ in Latin.

Since its a medievally inspired

themed wedding, we felt this

was fitting. It is our way of

realizing that life is difficult, but

as long as we have each other

we’ll get through whatever

difficulties come our way.

The bunny and the kitty cat have a

particularly special meaning. Some

of you might know that the root of

my last name, Kott, means ‘tomcat’

in Old Slavic. The bunny on the

other hand might have some of you

confused. Let me tell you the

fairytale of ‘The Rabbit King’. It is

a story similar to the very popular

‘Frog Prince’ however this one

‘actually’ happened. One day a

king came to the castle of a noble

family, having been invited for

dinner. The mother of the princess

was a very clever (however,

def inite ly good) witch. She

particularly mastered in the arts of

words. All she wanted was the best

Page 9: Tom and Tyna Wedding Magazine 4

for her daughter. The king,

unawares, came to the dinner party.

Within seconds, the princesses

mother added a diminutive to the

king’s name, turning him from Kral

into Kralíček (little king) which

subsequently turned into Kralik

(rabbit). Since Czechs eat rabbits,

the palace immediately put knives

to the poor rabbit king’s throat.

However, the good princess saw

how handsome the rabbit king was,

and so she saved him from his fate,

easily turning him back into his

original form with true love’s kiss.

And this is why Tom has become

known as ‘bunny’ and therefore the

tasty animal graces on our crest

The crown signifies Tom’s last

name, Kral, which means ‘king’ in

Czech (also one of the reasons for

the medievally-inspired theme).

The mountains on the crest

symbolize two things: originally,

my family has a coat of arms

that depicts White Mountain

from Czech Republic, and apart

from this it also symbolizes our

move to the Rocky Mountains of

British Columbia.

The scales on the top of the crest,

and the arrow holding the scales

up, symbolize our astrological

signs, Libra and Sagittarius.

The future looks bright for Tom

and Kristina. After the wedding

they plan on moving to British

Columbia as soon as they can.

They plan on settling down on

Vancouver Island, somewhere

North of Victoria, where they can

build their dream house, complete

with a Food Studio for Tom, and a

Dance Studio for Kristina. They

look forward to having children in

the next year or two, so you can

look forward to seeing those little

faces soon enough - no need to

pressure this couple.

Although it will be difficult to leave

family and friends in Toronto, Tom

and Kristina believe that the West

Coast will be best for the kind of

life they want to lead and raise

their children in. All are welcome

to visit them in their new home,

once they find it - view it as just

another reason to go for a vacation

in Beautiful British Columbia.

Tom and Kristina will continue to

keep in touch with family and

friends, but if you ever need to

contact them, you can always

email them at:

[email protected]
