Tom A. Pedersen Senior Vice President and Director of Sustainability Mr. Pedersen, Director of Sustainability for CDM Smith’s global operations, is leading the development and implementation of CDM Smith’s Sustainability Performance Improvement Management System (SPIMS) for internal operations firmwide addressing all dimensions of the triple bottom line. He also consults to senior managers in client organizations on strategy, scorecards, sustainability, EHS performance improvement and organizational development, and management system development and implementation. Mr. Pedersen has over 35 years of environmental and management consulting experience with a focus on the design, development and implementation of management systems for industry, university, federal and public sector clients. He has supported a wide array of clients undertake environmental management systems (EMS) and sustainability projects including Harvard University, Duke University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Los Angeles World Airports, Houston Airport System, Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., Carnival Corporation, Alcoa, Lambert Field St. Louis Airport, among others. Mr. Pedersen has served on the ISO 14001 EMS US Technical Advisory Group (TAG) and on the ISO 26000 Social Responsibility TAG. He served as Chair of the WEF EMS Committee and Chair of the WEF 2010 Cities of the Future Conference. He is currently chair of the Water Environment Federation (WEF) Sustainability Community of Practice and WETEC Future Issues Symposium. He also chairs the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) Envision™ Education Committee and the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Sustainable Infrastructure Committee. Sustainability Mr. Pedersen is leading CDM Smith’s sustainability performance improvement for all corporate and business units globally. He developed the Sustainability Performance Improvement Management System (SPIMS) to serve as the framework for addressing sustainability challenges and opportunities within the interdependent triple bottom line environmental, social and economic dimensions. He has facilitated a series of workshops within this framework to identify and prioritize sustainability opportunities, establish key performance metrics and set targets for continual sustainability performance improvement. Environmental performance improvement activities underway include GHG emissions inventories and reduction activities, energy conservation and office waste recycling and resource management. CDM Smith’s corporate sustainability implementation team supporting sustainability performance improvement activities being implemented by CDM Smith professionals worldwide including social performance initiatives related to training and development and economic performance including fund raising for philanthropic organizations including Water for People and Engineers without Borders.
