Cheese Day weekend is the pinnacle of our fundraising efforts. Membership in our Toledo Lions Club chapter has grown substantially this year and our fellow Lions have devoted many hours of work to ensure that Cheese Days remains the best summer event in Lewis County for the entire family to attend. All the hard work you see is done by community volunteers and all profits from Cheese Days go right back into our wonderful community. The Lions Club funds school scholarships, school supplies for some students and food for special school events. Last November, we gave away 75 frozen turkeys at our annual Turkey Bingo and at Christmas we distributed food baskets to many families in need. We are currently working on a Veterans Wall of Honor, planned for the north end of Toledo’s city park. Engraved bricks can be purchased in honor of any serviceman or woman for $100. Applications for a veterans brick are available at Toledo businesses. These are just a few examples of the many ways the Lions Club supports Toledo. So have a fun summer, support the Lions Club by attending Cheese Days and when you see someone wearing the yellow Lions vest at any of the events be sure to thank them for their contribution in making Toledo a better place to live!

Lions Club Greenhouse This year the Toledo Lions Club will be auctioning a deluxe greenhouse hand-built by Brad Dykstra using old-growth cedar and tempered tinted glass. The auction will be Saturday, July 14 at the Toledo Middle School at 1 p.m. Estimated value: $5,000.

Chuggin’ along Toledo’s old logging railroad, c. 1920sBy Jake Morgan Before Interstate 5 connected southern Lewis County with the rest of the northwest, timber was transported primarily by railroad or down the Cowlitz River. Few living can remember Toledo’s railroad that connected Toledo and Layton Prairie to the former town of Veness, located south of Winlock in the 1920s. The railroad’s path began at the old Veness sawmill, owned by the ‘Timber Baron of Winlock’ J.A. Veness, located between booming Winlock and Vader near the existing north-south tracks by Ferrier Road. The railroad stretched eastward, crossing what is now I-5 near the Toledo-Vader exit. The railroad continued into Toledo through what is now the baseball fields behind the elementary school, past the Toledo city park and ran through Maple Street in town.

The tracks crossed the Cowlitz River over a trestle bridge at the end of Maple St. into the former town of Eadonia, located on the eastern side of the Cowlitz near what is now South County Park, and extended

east for several more miles to the former town of Knab, just south of what is now State Route 505. The booming logging business came to an abrupt halt at the end of the 1920s when the stock market crashed and demand for high-quality timber disappeared. All the rails, spikes, locomotives, bridges and equipment were dismantled and sold for scrap in Portland. By the time the logging business picked up again, trucks were used to transport the timber to sawmills and beyond. The towns of Veness, Eadonia and Knab are no longer around, but a few signs of their existence remain. Before the Mossyrock Dam was built in 1968, frequent flooding on the Cowlitz River wiped out early low-elevation settlements. Glenn Thompson was born in Orting, Washington on April 3, 1924. His parents were both of Scottish ancestry with Native American roots on his father’s side as well. His father, Noel Thompson, was born on his family’s homestead by the headwaters of Salzer Creek near Centralia around the time Washington became a state and lived most of his life in Lewis County. His mother, Inez McDowel l , was born in Scranton, Kansas in 1901, but spent most of her childhood years in Washington State (NE Pierce and SE King counties). Glenn’s parents moved to the Toledo area shortly before he turned two. They lived in town toward the west end of Pine Street until he was about five, then they moved to the Saindon place just north of the old Cowlitz Landing and the Miller place that is now owned by Don Wallace. Glenn had many adventures on this 92-acre place, where he built a dam on a small nearby creek for a swimming hole and a fishing pond. He and his friends also had a great time hiking down the Toledo-Winlock (“Haywire”) Railroad line (used for logging) and playing in LaCamas Creek near present-day Exit 60. When he was 8, he got to take a trip to the beach while his brother Lee was being born. In the late 1930s, their family’s house burned to the ground and not long after (1940), his parents divorced. At this time his dad moved to property near Layton Prairie. His mom continued to live in the same general area and went to work as a waitress for a restaurant in Toledo. She married Ed McGaughey in 1943. Glenn attended the Toledo School District and graduated in 1942. After high school, Glenn was hired to build wooden flooring for the Forest

Service’s temporary shelters that would provide a roof over the heads of those assigned to listen for the sound of enemy planes flying overhead and to string telephone wire to the listening posts. His work was interrupted one day by a draft letter, which said, “Your friends and neighbors have chosen you to serve in the Armed Forces of the United States.” After basic training, he was allowed to come home on a short furlough before being shipped out to Europe. He left Camp Swift in February 1944 being assigned to Company A of the 302nd Signal Operations Battalion of the Third Army, based outside of London. After D-Day, his unit was reassigned to the Twelfth Army Group under General Omar Bradley. Glenn spent two years in Europe, seeing places such as Normandy, Verdun, Trier, Idar-Oberstein, Wiesbaden, Heidelberg, Augsburg, and Bremerhaven and achieving the rank of T5. He arrived back in the States in early 1946. From 1946 and through the 1950s, Glenn picked up where he left off in

the Toledo area. He worked as a logger with his father for a few years and then started a partnership with two friends (John and Bob Clark), logging such areas as the right-of-way for Interstate 5 in south Lewis County. In 1948, he took Marie Kirkendoll out on her very first date on her 18th birthday. However, they only dated briefly at that time, as Glenn was very busy with his work and getting himself established. By 1956, Glenn had saved up enough to purchase his own place at the mouth of LaCamas Creek. He married Marie (daughter of Mark and Edith Layton Kirkendoll) in April 1957. Around 1960 or 1961, with a young family and tiring of the physically demanding work of logging, Glenn began the task of clearing his land and going into farming and cattle ranching. He and Marie had 3 children: Ada, Dana, and Scott. Ada died at age 4 in a farming accident in 1962. Dana is now a CPA and lives in the Kent, Washington area. Scott still lives in the Toledo area and has had various jobs over the years that include being a truck driver and a mechanic. Marie died in 2010. In 1969, Glenn began to supplement his farming income with school bus driving. He was a school bus driver with the Toledo School District for 20 years. In 1984, Glenn sold his cattle and started renting his 100-acre field for agricultural crops. Glenn’s retirement years have been full. He has five grandchildren: Todd, Kaleb, Jillian, Margaret, and Katrina. He joined the VFW, Post 3429 in 2005. Through be ing a pa r t o f tha t organization, he read an article in their magazine about how World War II veterans who had not received their medals could send in a copy of their discharge papers and have their medals sent to them. He finally received them last year!


Sandra "Sandy" Ann Miller was born July 27, 1938 in Laona, Wisconsin, to Joseph and Yvonne Britten, the third of five children. In 1952, the family moved to Ryderwood, Wash., and lived with her Uncle Milton and Aunt Minn Berg for six weeks before settling in Winlock. Sandy attended and graduated from Winlock High School in 1956. In 1955, she met Gene Miller, who was a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force's Strategic Air Command and stationed in Tucson, Arizona, while he was home on leave. They married September 8 at Everson, Wash., where country music legend Loretta Lynn was beginning her career. Lynn and The Westerners Band were family friends of the Millers. Loretta, Gene and Sandy have met several times remembering the wedding dance Loretta sang at, and the Millers have toured Loretta’s home at Hurricane Mills, Tenn., twice. The Millers lived in Longview and raised their three children, Doug, Cindy and Butch. Sandy was always active in their children’s many school and sport activities.Gene and Sandy built their log cabin on the Cowlitz River starting in 1985 with the help of family and friends. Gene worked at Weyerhaeuser, the Chlorine Plant and Sandy had a house cleaning business, so they commuted from Toledo to Longview until their retirement in 1990. Sandy was a newspaper reporter, covering Toledo News for The Winlock Ledger. She was also a news correspondent for The Lewis County News, now The Town Crier, for more than 12 years. The Millers were members of the Toledo Historical Society, and Sandy has been secretary for six years now. They were also co-founders of the Toledo Horseshoe Club and Senior Center volunteers. Sandy was president of the Lone Yew Sewing Club for 13 years and a member for 20 years. She was also a member of the Lone Yew Grange and an overseer for two years. She was a Cheese Day Committee member for three years, assisting with the queen’s program and coronation. Teaching oil painting and greeting card classes to many local area residents has also been a enjoyable hobby for Sandy. Losing Gene, the “love of her life,” suddenly in October 2011 was a tremendous loss, but Sandy has tried to keep up with her involvement in local organizations.

Allen Trafton was born in Bellingham, Washington on 5/7/1939 and was three years old when he moved to Days Grove in Toledo. He grew up in Toledo with his sister Alice (Ramsey) and brother Gary. Allen graduated from Toledo High School in 1958. After graduation he started working for the Washington Forestry Department where he fought fires all over Washington State. He also worked for the Toledo Telephone Company. Sandra (Wood) Trafton was born in Bellingham, Washington (same hospital as Allen) on 6/5/1943 and lived on the coast in Taft, Oregon. When she was 10 years old her family moved to Poulsbo, Washington. Sandra was the oldest and grew up with two sisters and a brother. Allen and Sandra met in January of 1959 through mutual friends, Don Martinson & Judy Thayer (also of Toledo). They started “going steady” shortly thereafter. Allen was drafted into the army in March 1960. Sandra had a whirlwind month in June of 1961; she turned 18 years old on 6/5/61, graduated from North Kitsap High School on 6/6/61 and got married to Allen on 6/24/61 in Poulsbo. Sandra’s mother and paternal grandmother also got married on the date of June 24th. Allen and Sandra came to Toledo to live. Allen was honorably discharged from the army in May of 1962 and their first child, Linda was born in July of that year. Allen started working at the Weyerhaeuser mill in Longview, Washington. Their second child, Wayne was born in January 1964. Sandra was a busy homemaker but did work part time a few years at the Country House Restaurant and the Toledo Shake Shop. Allen changed jobs and started work at Reynolds Metal Company 4/1/1968 where he was also a part of the

volunteer fire fighter crew. They broke ground for a new home on the corner of 5th and Washington Street in March of 1969 (to note it rained every day in the month of March that year). They build their home themselves gradually as they could afford the supplies. An unexpected opportunity to sell their current house prompted them to move into their unfinished home and have the adventure of finishing it while living in it. Eventually it was completed and has even been through a remodel and is the home where Allen and Sandra still reside. Allen tended a large garden for many years and Sandra canned an abundance of produce. They went on a couple of fun filled family vacations; one to Disneyland and one to Montana/Wyoming area. Their kids grew up, graduated from Toledo High School and one after the other moved away from home so Sandra went to work at Wee Care Day Care in Toledo for 13 years. Allen retired

from Reynolds Metal Company after 30+ years on 1/4/1999. He then worked again part time for the Toledo Telephone Company for a few years. Allen and Sandra have 4 grandsons (Wayne’s sons) living in Billings, Montana. Drew Trafton, 24 is a broadcast journalist and recently married to a lovely woman named Annie. Kyle Trafton, 22 just earned a degree in education from Montana State University. Nolan Trafton, 15 enjoys playing soccer. And Isaac Trafton, 13 swims competitively. Currently Allen enjoys painting and recently returned from a trip to New Zealand and Australia with his daughter. Sandra enjoys playing bingo, e-mailing and still loves the beach since living there as a small child. Together they have been long time members of the Toledo Presbyterian church, enjoy spending time with family and friends, reading and going to the movies. Allen and Sandra celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last summer with friends and family.

Brooke Mikel, daughter of Bob Mikel My name is Brooke. I moved here from Reno, Nevada about a year and a half ago. I was a prima ballerina for the Reno Dance Company until two years ago, when I had a bad injury. I am currently a sophomore at Toledo High School. I play volleyball and wrestle for THS. When I get out of high school, I would like to go to college and get a career in Entomology (the study of bugs). And after a long life of working, I would like to open a dance studio and become a dance instructor.

This year’s coronation of the 2012 Cheese Day Queen will take place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, at Toledo’s Daily Grind coffee house, located downtown at 241 Cowlitz Street.

Emma Tilley, daughter of Warren and Lisa Tilly Emma is currently an 8th grader at Toledo Middle School and has lived in Toledo her whole life. I have been the president of my 4-H club for two years in a row and I have been riding horses since I was three years old. I am in the talent search program put on by Centralia College. My goals for when I get older are: in my junior year of high school to do running start and then after my senior year do two more years of college. If all goes as planned, I want to be a physical therapist as well as a massage therapist.


Toledo’s school garden program

Our high school's hoop house has gone from shabby to productive all in the matter of a few short months under the watchful eyes of THS Ag Science teacher Mr. John Ball and volunteer gardener extraordinaire Mr. Chuck Reynolds. The students have been part of this project since the very first site preparation, hoop house repair, seed sowing and germination, growing, transplanting and now marketing. We all should be proud of their achievements. Fifty tomato starts from this project even found their way to Providence Regional Cancer System employees in Centralia and Lacey. Not only are we nurturing Toledo, we are taking care of the health-care providers that care for our community. The students have also been selling their plant starts at the Toledo Saturday Market in town. All in all, it’s been a pretty fantastic first year for Toledo's School Garden Initiative Program High School Chapter.

11 a.m. TOLEDO CHEESE DAYS PARADE This yearʼs parade theme is “Chuggin' Thru Toledo”. Parade marshals: The Big Cheeses: Glenn Thompson, Sandy Miller and Allen & Sandra Trafton. Parade registration at Toledo Middle School. All parade entries are assigned assembly and dispersal plans. Children are assigned a special place near the head of the parade. Parade route starts at 5th & Augustus Street. Go east on Augustus to 2nd, south on 2nd to Oak, then west on Oak to 5th. Ribbons will be presented to the 1st and 2nd place winners in all divisions of the parade. The judges will be at the Presbyterian Church to decide upon the winners and present ribbons. It usually takes the judges up to one hour to determine the winners. Crowd Control: Safety is our biggest concern. We have be come increasingly concerned with children getting too close to the wheels of parade vehicles while chasing candy thrown by parade participants. Parents are asked to please help by keeping a close watch on their youngsters. In addition, the drivers of large trucks & other dangerous vehicles have been instructed not to throw candy from their vehicles. The Toledo Lions will police the main areas of the parade route to attempt to keep children from getting into dangerous areas. Toledo Boy Scouts will be selling pop.
