1. Introduction• Language is the system of communication that enables humans to

communicate, cooperate and pass on the information and knowledge from one generation to the next.

• Telugu is the language with the third largest number of native speakers (74 million) in India.1

• It is the official language of the state of Andhra Pradesh, India and it is also spoken in the United States, where the Telugu diaspora numbers more than 800,000, with the highest concentration in Central New Jersey2 as well as in many other countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK, etc.

• With its wide geographic distribution, Telugu stands at No.15 in the list of “Top 100 languages by Population”.3

1. Introduction …contd

• Children of Native Telugu speakers find it difficult even to communicate with their parents in their mother tongue.

• This younger generation finds it even more difficult to communicate with their grandparents and is unable to garner the wealth of information available because of their inability to understand the language.

• They shy away from community activities and find themselves in an alien land unable to read signs, mingle and communicate with their relatives when they are on vacation touring their native land.

2.1.Problem

• It is surprisingly difficult to learn the language on one’s own.

• Language based communities exist but they are geared up towards solving societal needs in general.

• Written and recorded resources are limited. Classes and instructors are either non-existent or inaccessible.

2.2. Current Competitive Solutions

• www.kidsone.in – An e-learning website specifically designed for children, especially

pre-school kids. – It introduces much frequently used vocabulary through pictures

and animated rhymes and provides various games to test and improve the material learned.

– This website is not intended for intermediate users and expert users.

• www.learningtelugu.org – provides hints and resources for learning Telugu.– Lacks interactivity with the user– Lacks progress tracking

3.1. Approach to the solution

• We addressed this problem by designing an Online Learning Aid (TOLA ) geared towards a wide variety of population with various levels of language expertise. – Deceptively simple, logical and interactive interface

using which the users are assumed to browse the website and to learn the language by themselves.

– Instructor led courses and lesson plans, which facilitates e-learning and progress tracking

3.2. Approach to the solution…contd

• Absolute beginners: Everyone including kids, adolescents, and adults who wish to learn the language and get acquainted with the Telugu speaking community.

• Intermediate users: Those who know just the basics of the language but lack essential grammatical skills and vocabulary to effectively express themselves.

• Expert users: Those who can effectively use the language and wish to act as instructors to help others in learning the language and those who wish to propagate the language by pursuing literary activities.

6. Usability Test Results

User Feedback based on Likert scale • Color Scheme• Look and Feel• Consistency• Textual, Audio and Video content • Learn Feature

The format of the 5 level Likert scale which we have used here is,

Extremely Dissatisfied Somewhat Dissatisfied Neither Satisfied nor Dissatisfied Somewhat Satisfied Extremely Satisfied

From the statistical study we came to know best rating was for look and feel and learn section got the least rating. From the usability study we realized that we need to improve little more in the learn section
