PRINCIPALS BLOG
Dear Parents and Friends,
Time is ticking away…. We have less than three weeks of school left and the days are just getting busier…
Twilight Festival What a fabulous evening it was. The weather was perfect. The community spirit of Ferny Creek PS was well and truly alive. The Grade 5/6’s have been working throughout the term to plan their stalls... all of the other classes, their teachers and respective parents were collecting or baking and preparing their stalls…the choir and bands have been rehearsing during lunchtimes and the Fundraising Committee have been working relentlessly behind the scenes to pull it all together… culminating in the Ferny Creek Twilight festival! However, events such as this, only happen when the community as a whole, pulls together. A big thank you to every member of our community who helped out and supported the event in any way big or small. A further thank you to the parents and staff who stayed to clean up after the event and who came in over the weekend. We managed to raise approximately $14,000 which will be a big boost to our fundraising efforts this year. A big thank you to all of sponsors and donors who donated prizes for the Silent Auction, supplies for the stalls, time and commitment on the day.
Parent Survey Thank you to all the parents and members of the community who have completed the Parent Survey. Your input is important to us as we plan our future directions and Strategic Plan for the next four years. If you haven’t yet had the opportunity you can access the link via our school web page.
Farewells It is that time of the year that sometimes we need to say farewells to members of our community. This year, it is with sadness that we are saying farewell to two of our valued teaching staff. Katie Knothe will be completing her teaching contract with us at the end of the year. We appreciate Katie’s expertise and community spirit. Her input to the production of the new FCPS brochure was invaluable as was her participation on the School Council. Thank you Katie, we will all miss you.
We are also saying a ‘temporary farewell’ to Jodie Benedict. Jodie is taking a year’s leave to pursue an opportunity within the Dyslexia field that has long been a passion of hers. I know that Jodie has contributed a great deal over the past few years to the learning of every student she has taught and has also been a great member of staff. We wish you every success in your new career direction Jodie and look forward to your return in 2020!

We are presently finalising our specialist structure. There will be further information on this in next week’s newsletter.
Teachers are currently planning the grade placement of students. There are extensive discussions that take place between the current and future teachers as well as a consideration of the educational, social, emotional and friendship needs of each and every student when placing the students into their grades for 2019. We are hoping to be able to announce to the students their new grades during the final week of school.
Scouts Victoria Award This week I received a letter from Brendan Watson, OAM who is the Chief Commissioner of Scouts Victoria. Brendan wrote to inform me of an award that has recently been bestowed on one of our students…
On behalf of the school community I would like to congratulate Lincoln Scott who has received the prestigious award of Grey Wolf from Scouts Victoria. Lincoln is a member of the 1st Ferny Creek Cub Pack. To attain the top award in each of the five sections in Scouting reflects initiative in tackling this challenge, sustained effort over many months and years, plus self-discipline, teamwork and leadership. In fact all of the values that we encourage and celebrate here at Ferny Creek PS. Only a small percentage of the scouting community reach this level. These are the top achievers among Scouting’s 47 million members globally. This is a fantastic effort Lincoln. Well done!
Final Assembly Planning is underway for our final assembly for the year which will take place on the final school day for all students, Thursday 20th December. Besides being our final assembly, it is a very special occasion for all of our Grade 6 students as they farewell not only their friends and teachers but also the end of their Primary School Days. We would like all members of our community to attend this special assembly. We invite you to arrive at 12.15pm ready for the commencement of procedures at 12.30pm. School will finish at 1.30p.m., following assembly.
Please also note that Thursday will be the final day for ALL students as Friday 21st December is an approved Curriculum Day.
Grade 5 and Grade 6 Rock Bands on Tour! The Grade 5 & Grade 6 Rock bands went on tour to Mt. Dandenong Primary School on Tuesday. As always they were amazing. The students really enjoyed their performance and were an excellent audience. After many years being on staff and being in the audience at MDPS, it was quite an interesting experience to be touring with ‘my band’! Well done to each of the bands, I was very proud of you. Thank you also to Dean for your time and commitment in coordinating this event.
Enviroknights The Enviro-knights will once again be donning their gardening gear and heading down to the Frog Bog this time for the final Enviro-knights working Bee for the year. They will be spreading mulch around the Frog Bog and doing a little more clean-up in the bush garden tucker area. We would gratefully accept any help from the community if you are able to assist. We are having the Enviro-knight working bee this Friday during recess (1.10 p.m. – 1.50 p.m.).
Whole School Transition Next Tuesday will be a whole school transition day when students will again spend time in their new levels. However, as Grades will still be finalising, they won’t yet know who will be their class teacher. It is also the day when many of the Grade 6 students will be spending the day at their new high school.
Final Transition morning for New Foundation Students This Friday is an exciting day for our new 2019 Foundies when they come to spend the morning at school and spend time with their new buddies. The morning will conclude with a welcome morning tea in the multi-purpose room for the new Foundies their families and their new buddies.
Friday Assembly I am always happy to celebrate the wonderful talents of our musical students. This week we will enjoy performances from Aiden R., Havanna H., Josh D., Blair W., Evie O., Alexis R., and Joni W.

Persuasive Arguments One of the best parts of my role is being in the classrooms with the
students when I can and also having them bring me their work to
show and share with me.
During their study of ‘persuasive writing’ the Grade 1/2 students have been
learning how to present an argument with supporting evidence and using emotive language. Judging by these examples these students would be able
to persuade me to do anything… Anni
Why Ferny Creek is an amazing school…
You should definitely let your kids go to Ferny Creek Primary School. Firstly, the kids are really nice and caring and your kids will love our kids. Secondly, the teachers are the best because they are nice and the teachers teach you a lot like spelling and maths and art and music. Thirdly, our Principal Anni is an awesome Principal and she is sweet. So let your kids go to Ferny Creek Primary School. Isla B, 1/2B
It’s a great school Ferny Creek Primary School and it’s the best school ever because… Firstly, we have iPads to help us learn and read. Secondly, we have good Japanese, Music and Art teachers and kind kids. Thirdly, it’s an amazing environment with trees and grass. That’s why you should go to Ferny Creek Primary School. Amalia O, 1/2B
Why Ferny Creek is a terrific school…I really want way more children to come to Ferny Creek PS. I have 3 reasons… Firstly, the teachers help the kids learn a lot like maths, writing art, music and PE. Secondly, Ferny Creek has a terrific choir. The choir performs at places and people get to see you sing. They sing ‘Shotgun’, ‘Cake by the Ocean’ and Count on Me. Lastly, our school has very very nice kids and you make lots of friends. I hope you send your kids here. Thanks. Eliza S, 1/2B
Why Ferny Creek is a spectacular school. Why you should definitely go to Ferny Creek Primary School… My first reason is you can learn an instrument with our lovely music teacher Dean. And he is a jazz pianist. My second reason is our environment is spectacular and we have so many beautiful trees. My third reason is the teachers are lovely. In conclusion please please come to our amazing school. Harper M, 1/2B
Why I should get my own fish… Dear Mum, I know you don’t want another pet and I know you don’t like fish but I think fish will be a great pet for us. You ask why? Firstly, I know you don’t want another pet but all I need to do is feed it and clean its tank so it doesn’t take much work. Secondly, I know you think it will be too much money but they only cost $2 to $10 and I will save up money by doing chores and it won’t take too much work. I know you think I won’t look after it but I will feed it and give it company. Well, I hope all of these arguments make you want a pet fish. Tully H, 1/2B
Why I should get my own bedroom… I will really like my own bedroom without my brother because he is so annoying and if I had my own room I would be able to keep it clean. Firstly, it is because Henry always snores really loudly and it wakes me up at night. This makes me really tired and effects my piano. Secondly, I could read without him interrupting me in my own room and I could finish my book. Thirdly, Harry could sleep in our old room and you could build me a new one. I know it is expensive but I will give you all my pocket money. In conclusion, if you get me my own bedroom I would be very happy. So Mum and Dad can you please get me my own room. Liam C, 1/2B

The Human Body and Its Systems
Ferny Creek Primary School
This new WiseOnes unit of 8 one-hour lessons develops an understanding that the human body is an integrated
system of many separate systems. Learn about your skin, circulation and nervous system. Learn about your
skeleton which supports the whole body, your brain which enables knowledge, courage, honesty and curiosity.
Learn how to use Socratic questioning and unusual facts about the body. In Week 8, we will all share our new
knowledge, just as the body shares all its systems to make a whole person.
WiseOnes Application for Term 1 2019
This program is available for all Grade 1 - Grade 6 children who have qualified for WiseOnes.
