On behalf of the Lao Hospitality Industry, it is a great pleasure to introduce the “MICE Guide to Laos” brochure. Sixteen hotels and resorts have come together to open a new avenue in tourism, creating the first informative MICE brochure to assist our travel and trade partners worldwide to recognize Laos as a true destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions or Events.

We hope through creating synergy within the private sector, we will be able to increase awareness for Laos, where we have a green footprint. Laos is a land of unseen beauty from caves to waterfalls, culture and heritage – not forgetting the diverse ethnic cultures who work in harmony to showcase Laos as a traditional and authentic destination. We are looking forward to working with you to create an experience your clients will never forget.

I also want to thank the German Development Cooperation (GiZ) RELATED Program for assisting our MICE partners to complete the brochure.

Laos, ‘The Last Frontier’, offers truly authentic experiences in nature, culture, and history, backed by carefree, hospitable people. The clock stands still in this country that has avoided over-tourism, and remains rarely explored.

Join Mother Nature in solitude. Trek along forest trails to ethnic villages in the mountainous north. Explore caves by foot or boat in central Laos. Admire powerful waterfalls plunging off the Bolaven Plateau’s cliffs in the south. Take a cruise on the mighty Mekong through a pristine wonderland only found in Laos.

Green is the name of the game. Trees cover some 40% of the country, with 20 National Protected Areas conserving the environment and rare wildlife. Visit forests flourishing with medicinal plants, herbs, and non-timber products for crafting household goods.

You can hike through rice fields and swim in a clear waterhole in wilderness. Kayak in the middle of nowhere. Immerse yourself in an easy or challenging excursion. And be sure to visit during Green Season (June-October) when the landscape explodes in an emerald sea and raging waterfalls.

Culture vultures can swoop into a remote world that 50 different ethnic groups call home. Visit their villages, meet the locals, and learn about their beliefs, traditions, and lifestyles. Plenty of Lao villages welcome you with meals and homestays. Submerge yourself in their daily lives, participate in ceremonies, and observe or take part in making handicrafts.

Most main tourist towns offer opportunities to meet your appetite for culture and art. Scour the museums to learn about Lao history, culture, and even its dinosaurs. Treat yourself to a traditional performance, and visit a gallery to view traditional and modern art. And be sure to

sample Lao dishes, with sticky rice as the staple for many local dishes alongside a choice of noodle soups and veggies piled to the sky.

Heritage hounds can sniff out ancient Buddhist temples and stupas, each with a story to match their history and location. Explore a pair of UNESCO World Heritage sites starring Luang Prabang, the one-time capital of the Lane Xang Kingdom woven with French colonial presence. Vat Phou in Champasak predates Angkor Wat with its civilization’s icons still intact.

Head to Houaphan and Viengxay “the Cave City”, the headquarters and birthplace of the Lao Revolution that includes underground sleeping areas, schools, entertainment centres and factories. The Plain of Jars stars in Xieng Khouang and also features bombing sites and ancient buildings that survived.

Why Laos?An Authentic Experience in Nature, Culture, and Heritage

Land-linked Laos sits in the heart of the Asia Pacific, and is gaining traction with global business travellers. The upcoming high-speed railway between China and Thailand is shifting the country’s role to a main portal on the “One Road, One Belt” initiative, and MICE are on board.

An increasing number of regional flights and growth in upper-end accommodation with meeting and convention facilities are already drawing MICE to Laos. The distinct Lao food and a range in specialty restaurants adds to its lustre, and “The Last Frontier” presents the perfect backdrop for incentive groups.

Direct daily flights to Laos from Bangkok, Hanoi, Phnom Penh, and Singapore cover Southeast Asian hubs. Korean and several Chinese destinations deliver Northeast Asian passengers without a stop. Other Asian markets offer weekly direct flights, and many are just one-stop away.

European countries, including Frankfurt, London, Moscow, and Paris, are also just one-stop away. Flights transit in Bangkok, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore, and Seoul, with many layovers less than four hours.

International hotel brands have been sprouting up in Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and Pakse. They join Lao chains and stand-alone properties in presenting accommodation with modern facilities, amenities, and excellent service.

Most MICE hotels and resorts offer spas and Lao massages. Many work with local tour operators to arrange incentive packages. Properties pays special attention to sustainable initiatives including plastic-alternative campaigns, recycling, and compost heaps.

Venues cover all needs and sizes. Event spaces range from small, comfortable settings in nature to multi-configuration layouts for conventions and expos. Hold a function on a Mekong riverboat. Modern equipment and attentive staff ensure a successful event.

Dining takes on a new dimension in Laos, with more chic restaurants serving imaginative dishes. Lao menus offer local favourites and selections once served to royalty. Chefs create cutting-edge Western dishes that fuse local natural, and organic ingredients and herbs.

When it comes to innovative incentives, Laos creates team-building activities, adventures, and pampering with a distinct local twist. Group competitions mix nature and culture…can you really live like locals without electricity, plant and harvest rice by hand, perform tough-to-do traditional dances, and rely on the wild for food?

Adventure abounds in Laos. Zip-lines soar past towering waterfalls and through the jungle. Kayaking, caving, and cycling add to the mix. Trek through the jungle or tackle a cliff-side via ferrata. Activities found nowhere else abound in the “Last Frontier”, and you can always unwind with a Lao massage and a riverside drink.

Why MICE in Laos?Expanding Infrastructure & Amazing Incentives

Northern Laos has it all. Cruise the Mekong, climb to mountaintop ethnic villages, explore hidden caves and waterfalls, and uncover Laos’ past.

From the Green Triangle, where Laos, China, and Myanmar meet, to Luang Prabang and Houaphan, the birthplace of today’s Laos, the region wraps nature, history, and culture into one experiential gift.

Luang Prabang stands as the hub for Northern Laos. The UNESCO World Heritage City opens that gift, along with a menu of adventures and activities.

Check out ancient temples, architecture, craft villages, caves, waterfalls, and nature parks. Examine the elaborate décor under a long sweeping roof at Vat Xieng Thong at the tip of the city’s peninsula.

Trek to ethnic villages and waterfalls, or go off road on a bike. Try kayaking, or take a handicraft or Lao cooking class. Hop on a river cruise or fly on a zip line. Enjoy all of Luang Prabang.

Oudomxay, Luang Prabang’s western neighbour, is the latest hot tourism spot, with “Destination Pakbeng: A Mekong Oasis” and Nam Kat Yorla Pa’s adventure park taking centre stage. In Pakbeng, you can walk with elephants or access the remote on the Khmu Trail. The province also highlights 13-km-long Chom Ong Cave and Nam Kat Waterfall.

North of Oudomxay, Phongsaly, Laos’ northernmost province, is known for its green tea, and offers treks and boat expeditions into

remote mountainous areas, home to rarely visited ethnic groups.

Further west, “Luang Namtha: Nature’s Playground” presents fun in the wilderness. You can trek, cycle, boat, kayak, or motorbike in pristine forests to meet people in villages where time stands still.

You’ll find Laos’ piece of the infamous Golden Triangle in Bokeo Province, the launch point for Mekong cruises to Pakbeng and Luang Prabang. Though often overlooked, Bokeo is home to the popular Gibbon Experience, and Houay Xay town reveals historical and cultural gems.

A short drive from Luang Prabang lands in Sayabouly, “The Land of Elephants”, and home to the Elephant Conservation Centre. You can also immerse yourself in the myths surrounding Sayabouly’s ancient religious sites and caves, while enjoying untouched nature.

Head east from Luang Prabang to Houaphan and explore the Viengxay Cave City, the birthplace of Laos. Search for rare wildlife on the Nam Nern Night Safari, inspect Hintang Archaeological Park, and explore Xam Neua Town.

Tourists often ask, “Is there anything else to do in Xieng Khouang besides see the jars?” The answer, “Plenty.” Tour Phonsavanh Town, spend a day on the Southern Jar Route, explore an ancient kingdom in Khoun, and experience culture and wartime history.

Page 10: TOGETHER, WE BRING YOU MORE OF THE WORLD final MICE...and Myanmar meet, to Luang Prabang and Houaphan, the birthplace of today’s Laos, the region wraps nature, history, and culture

History, culture, and nature merge in Central Laos. All provinces present ancient temples and nature trails to waterfalls and remote ethnic villages, while a modernizing Vientiane Capital manages to maintain its relaxing, traditional roots.

Scour Lane Xang Avenue from temples and markets near the Presidential Palace to Patuxay Monument and the revered That Luang Stupa. A stroll along downtown’s Mekong riverfront reveals the Night Market, Shopping Street, Chao Anou Park, and plenty of great dining. Outside the city centre, you’ll find a choice of golf courses and Buddha Park.

Vang Vieng, on the road from Vientiane to Luang Prabang, opens the door to The Last Frontier. The world’s river-tubing capital offers more than a thrilling ride down the Nam Song River. Vang Vieng’s backdrop of limestone outcrops is filled with caves to explore, trails to trek, waterfalls, and lagoons for swimming. Extreme adventurers can climb cliffs on the “Vang Vieng Challenge”. A scenic 90-km drive from the capital lands at Nam Ngum Lake that is evolving from a weekend retreat into an international tourist stop. You’ll find leisure activities like golf and a casino, a full slate of water sports, boat rides to island villages, and camping.

Enter nature’s backdoor in Bolikhamxay, just outside the capital, and a great extension for

your Vientiane stay. Fancy a walk through nature to a spectacular view? In Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area, a short trek delivers you to the Elephant Tower that rises above a forest pachyderm trail. You can hike through orchid fields and long rivers to five waterfalls.

Khammouane, the “River Cave Capital”, presents a world of limestone towers with rivers running through its hidden tunnels and some hiding Buddha images. The Khammouane Loop is the latest craze, a provincial lap taking in Thakaek Town, Cave Alley, the Nakai Plateau and Limestone Forest.

Highlighting The Loop is Konglor Cave, with its renowned underground boat cruise with Community-Based Tourism villages at both ends. The more adventurous can trek along the famed Ho Chi Minh Trail and explore caves by boat.

Climb aboard the Savannakhet Historic Trail’s circuits, and delve into the province’s past, from its prehistory to the Indochina War. Walk around “Historic Downtown” with almost 20 attractions, while “Savannakhet Outskirts” present easy-to reach natural, cultural, and historical sites. You can also jump on the one-day Champone and Mekong River South circuits, and venture to the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Central Laos

Explore Southern Laos’ heritage and culture along the Mekong River, tour a war-torn town, taste fresh Bolaven coffee, and trek into the mountains to towering waterfalls and isolated ethnic settlements.

The Mekong is the main southern Lao attraction, exhibiting the Vat Phou World Heritage site and French colonial infrastructure. Raging rapids roar through Champasak’s 4,000 Islands, and waterfalls dive off the Bolaven Plateau into Salavan and Attapeu Provinces. Journeys further east into the mountains unveil the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Take in the religious shrines and handicraft villages around Pakse Town, explore the Xe Pian protected area, and absorb yourself in coffee on the Bolaven Plateau.

Be among the first to savour “Unseen Salavan Province”, featuring overlooked ethnic groups adept at weaving, and the scars of war. Base your stay in Salavan Town or the Tad Lo tourist centre within three-hours of Pakse, and embark on simple 1-day tour circuits or 2-day treks. Adventures lead to waterfalls rushing over the Bolaven Plateau with Tad Lo holding the headlines.

You can scour Salavan Town’s main attractions with its UXO museum and bullet-riddled buildings, and wander to Toumlan’s Katang weaving villages and longhouses. Trails lead to caves, more waterfalls, and villages, where musicians play traditional instruments.

Explorers seeking a truly “off the beaten track” experience hit pay dirt in the mountains of “Amazing Attapeu”, tucked in the southeast corner of Laos. If you’re nuts about nature, Attapeu Province can take you deep into distant wilderness.

Visit isolated waterfalls, and feel their rumble applaud the tranquil setting. Trekkers will find rarely travelled paths, and local boats can lead you on a voyage through the jungle. And, though Buddhism played a minor role in distant spirit-worshipping Attapeu, you can find a few ancient temples dating to the 16th century.

Most of Sekong Province remains a mystery, but you can tap into its remote jungle, and see its hidden waterfalls and untouched ethnic villages. Sekong remains mostly unexplored, with its forested mountains difficult to access. Still, you can visit waterfalls on the road linking it to Attapeu and Champasak Provinces, take a Sekong River boat, ride or visit ethnic groups in Ban Khan Don on an organized tour.
