Message from President On behalf of the Organising Committee and the Malaysian Association of Dental Public Health Specialists (MADPHS),

it gives me great pleasure to welcome all of you to the 8th MADPHS Scientific Meeting & AGM 2017.

The theme for this conference is “Tobacco Control: Towards the Endgame”. The endgame or elimination of tobacco took the form of a concrete proposal several years ago. WHO countries have taken a consensus to accept this challenge. During the previous century, tobacco use had claimed an estimated 100 million lives and it is projected to cause a billion deaths in the 21st century. Thus, it is timely that we deliberate on this issue as a public health priority, what is the current scenario in Malaysia and strengthening the role of DPHS.

I would like to express my gratitude to our Guest of Honour Dr Noor Aliyah bt. Ismail (Principal Director of Oral Health Malaysia), distinguished speakers, moderator, chairpersons, participants, collaborators particularly the Oral Health Division Ministry of Health and members of the organizing committee for their supports, contribution, dedication and tireless effort to make this conference a reality. Dr. Noraryana Hassan is a Public Health Specialist and the Senior Principal Assistant Director for FCTC and Tobacco

Control Unit, Disease Control Division, Ministry of Health Malaysia. She obtained her medical degree (MBBS) from

University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur in 1998 and her Master of Public Health (MPH), Specialist in Health Promotion from

University Malaysia Sarawak, Kuching in 2008.

Her current scope of work includes planning and coordinating disease control programme of NCDs, analyzing and

monitoring NCD programme, mentoring and capacity building. She is very active in Tobacco Control Programme and

currently coordinating the implementation of WHO FCTC for Malaysia. She is also a technical expert in many committees

related to Tobacco Control Programme locally and internationally. She was appointed as the Technical Expert in for

NCD of Sacler’s Institute of New York of Science.

Dr Noraryana has completed and published numerous research projects. She actively participated in oral and poster

presentation in the scientific conference at state, national and international level. She was a Best Student in Master of

Public Health UNIMAS in 2008, won Best Paper Oral Presentation in the 14th Public Health Colloquium and received

Excellence Service Award in 2003 and 2010, and Melaka State Recognition Medal: Bintang Khidmat Terpuji in 2011.
