THE CLERGY LETTER
Have you ever played patience games with a pack of cards? When I was younger I can recall playing such a game called clock patience. The name comes from the way that the cards are laid out - in piles of four corresponding to the twelve numbers on a clock face with an additional pile in the middle. The object of the game is to uncover all the cards before unveiling the four kings. As you sequentially turn over cards in the different piles around the clock you nervously hope that you will not find one of the kings next. This may well reflect the kind of hope that we have for many things in our lives; an uncertain desire that things might work out well. As we approach Easter once again we reflect on the story of an earth-shattering weekend that begins with all hope seemingly dashed. Jesus’ followers looked on in despair as their Lord hung on a cross and with his last breath proclaimed: it is finished! Jesus was dead and buried. Was it really all over? On the third day a number of those same followers went down to the tomb and to their disbelief discovered that it was empty. Jesus had been raised from the dead by God’s power; just as he had promised. The Bible tells us that the risen Lord Jesus appeared to over 500 people. They were first-hand witnesses of this astonishing truth. Jesus’ last words had not been a cry of despair but an exclamation of the completion of the work that he had come into the world to do. We do not know what life will bring us next. The good news of Easter is that we can have a sure hope in Jesus, and his promises, through what he has already done for us. “For I am convinced that neither death nor life. nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8v38-39

ST MARY’S CHURCH, UPAVON Pet Service In March we had a Pet Service in the church, which was hilarious, and brought in several new visitors. There were I think 16 dogs, of all sorts of shapes and sizes, toy rabbits, a toy cat and a Rocking Horse, and ..... mole hills all along the path to the church, and even a toad in the entrance porch. Next time we could invite goats and chickens, or borrow one of the village geese! rd of April at 7.30pm in the

SAFETY AWARENESS
Despite numerous warnings and advice to members of the public, Police are continuing to hear reports of valuables being stolen from vehicles. It is so important that motorists are vigilant to help prevent becoming a victim. A thief only needs a few seconds to steal your belongings and leaving them on display is an invitation to opportunist thieves who will strike anywhere and at any time. Beauty spots can often be hot spots for this type of crime and Wiltshire has an abundance of these types of areas. Please bear this in mind when you are out and about exercising dogs or enjoying the rural landscape. Please always make sure that your vehicles and your homes are properly secured, and never leave anything on view in your cars. Imagine how you would feel if you returned to your vehicle and found your mobile phone, purse or other valuables had been stolen. It can be a distressing time for victims. • Don’t leave any valuables on display including laptops, satnavs, mobile phones, handbags, empty shopping bags, credit cards or vehicle documents in your car. If it is unavoidable – place them in a locked boot and ensure that any electrical equipment is switched off. • Don’t leave coats/jackets on show in the vehicle as a thief will want to see if there is anything valuable in the pockets. • Clean satnav suction marks off your windscreen, as leaving them is an immediate advert to thieves that a satnav is in the vehicle. Make sure no satnav attachments are left visible in your vehicle. • Remove your stereo if you can, mark it with the vehicle registration number if you can’t. • Leave your glove box open to show there is nothing in it. • If you own a van, make sure you remove your tools overnight and display an appropriate sign in the rear window making this clear. Anyone who sees suspicious activity should contact police on 101, if a crime is in progress ring 999 and if possible record the registration number of any vehicle involved. Gerry Ward
Easter Fayre For the second year running, Marlborough & District Rotary Club will be organising an Easter Fayre in Pewsey at the Bouverie Hall in aid of Great Western Hospital’s (GWH) Radio Therapy Appeal. Brighter Futures, the Charity Arm of GWH, has to raise £2.9m for the purchase of two Linear Accelerators and to provide training. The appeal has now passed the first million and construction of the building has started.
In support of this appeal, the Easter Fayre will be held in Pewsey at the Bouverie Hall on Saturday the 8th April (10:00am to 3:00pm). There will be many high quality attractions including Silk Flowers, Food, Plants, Fashion Accessories, Children’s clothes and many more. All the monies raised at this Fayre will be donated to this appeal. Having a local Radiotherapy Unit will provide huge benefits to cancer patients. Patients would no longer have to endure the stress of travelling to either Royal United Hospital (RUH) at Bath or Oxford University Hospital (OUH) at Oxford and waiting times would be reduced.
