Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners: We have just concluded Catholic Schools Week here in the Archdiocese. We are so blessed to have such wonderful schools here at Mary Star. Both our Elementary and High School continue to past on to our youth the Foundation of our Faith coupled with the highest standards of Academic Excellence. I am so grateful to our Principals, Teachers, Staff, Parents, and Students who make our schools here in San Pedro a Light to the World. Below you will find a brief discussion by Saint John Paul II on Christ as the True Light of the World. Have a Blessed Week. Fr. Harrigan Pastor We are all called to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, “the true light that enlightens everyone” (Jn 1:9), people become “light in the Lord” and “children of light” (Eph 5:8), and are made holy by “obedience to the truth” (1 Pet 1:22). This obedience is not always easy. As a result of that mysterious original sin, committed at the prompting of Satan, the one who is “a liar and the father of lies” (Jn 8:44), man is constantly tempted to turn his gaze away from the living and true God in order to direct it towards idols (cf. 1 Thes 1:9), exchanging “the truth about God for a lie” (Rom 1:25). Man’s capacity to know the truth is also darkened, and his will to submit to it is weakened. Thus, giving himself over to relativism and scepticism (cf. Jn 18:38), he goes off in search of an illusory freedom apart from truth itself. But no darkness of error or of sin can totally take away from man the light of God the Creator. In the depths of his heart there always remains a yearning for absolute truth and a thirst to attain full knowledge of it. This is eloquently proved by man’s tireless search for knowledge in all fields. It is proved even more by his search for the meaning of life. The development of science and technology, this splendid testimony of the human capacity for understanding and for perseverance, does not free humanity from the obligation to ask the ultimate religious questions. Rather, it spurs us on to face the most painful and decisive of struggles, those of the heart and of the moral conscience. The light of God’s face shines in all its beauty on the countenance of Jesus Christ, “the image of the invisible God” (Col 1:15), the “reflection of God’s glory” (Heb 1:3), “full of grace and truth” (Jn 1:14). Christ is “the way, and the truth, and the life” (Jn 14:6). Consequently the decisive answer to every one of man’s questions, his religious and moral questions in particular, is given by Jesus Christ, or rather is Jesus Christ himself, as the Second Vatican Council recalls: “In fact,it is only in the mystery of the Word incarnate that light is shed on the mystery of man. For Adam, the first man, was a figure of the future man, namely, of Christ the Lord. It is Christ, the last Adam, who fully discloses man to himself and unfolds his noble calling by revealing the mystery of the Father and the Father’s love”. Jesus Christ, the “light of the nations”, shines upon the face of his Church, which he sends forth to the whole world to proclaim the Gospel to every creature (cf. Mk 16:15). Hence the Church, as the People of God among the nations, while attentive to the new challenges of history and to mankind’s efforts to discover the meaning of life, offers to everyone the answer which comes from the truth about Jesus Christ and his Gospel. The Church remains deeply conscious of her “duty in every age of examining the signs of the times and interpreting them in the light of the Gospel, so that she can offer in a manner appropriate to each generation replies to the continual human questionings on the meaning of this life and the life to come and on how they are related”. – from Veritatis Splendor (1993)

Did You Know?/¿Sabia Usted? Reporting abuse is the right thing to do: Child abuse can happen anywhere, even in the home, and for families placed in this horrible situation, reporting abuse can be very difficult, but it is critical to do so in order to protect children. Adults must first act to stop the abuse by being alert to warning signs. If discovered, report abuse to the proper authorities. For more information on how to report abuse, request a copy of the VIRTUS© article “When the Right Choice is Difficult” by emailing [email protected] or calling (213) 637-7227. Holy Hour

In order to convert America and save the world what we need is for every parish to

come before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in Holy Hours of prayer

(St. Mother Teresa) Every Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. there is a

Eucharistic Holy Hour in our church. The Holy Hour begins with exposition of The Blessed Sacrament. Within the hour, there are

readings from Sacred Scripture and the saints, time for silent reflection, and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.

The Holy Hour concludes with Benediction. Please come and spend one hour with Jesus.

This is a special time of abundant blessings for all!

Divine Mercy Chaplet

Please join us every third Tuesday of each month in praying the Divine Mercy chaplet after the 5:15 p.m. Mass with veneration of the first-class relic of St. Faustina following the chaplet. This is a very powerful prayer as in the words of our Lord:

"Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy

at the hour of death"

Comfort for the Afflicted.

That all those who are afflicted, especially the poor, refugees, and marginalized, may find welcome and comfort

in our communities.

February Prayer Intentions of the Holy Father

Names stay on the sick list for 3 weeks. To renew, please call the parish office. To share an answered prayer about someone prayed for, please email at [email protected].

Please pray for all of the sick in our community, that they may find healing and comfort in Christ, especially:

YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD “I want to walk as a child of the light. I want to follow Jesus.” The words of this hymn reflect the simple truth at the heart of our faith: we desire to follow Jesus. We want to walk in his way and what better image is there than that of light?

Jesus lit a path on which to walk that would lead people to fully experience God's light life. When Jesus preached and taught and healed and shared meals with those around him he showed himself to be the face of God. He was LIGHT in the darkness of their illnesses or despair or sinfulness. We are to be LIGHT! Our mission is to bring others into the LIGHT and to share the glory of God. Our good deeds reflect our LIGHT from within and draw others into an experience of God. Recycling: We continue to do our little bit to save the earth by recycling and teaching the children the importance of doing so.
