2 December 18, 2016

Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners: As we draw ever closer to the Coming of Our Blessed Lord on Christmas Day we begin the proximate preparation for this great Feast Day of our Salvation. One of the best ways to prepare the way of the Lord in our own souls is a worthy and good Confession. Let us take advantage of this sacrament this week cleansing the Manger of our hearts thus making room for the Christ Child on Christmas Day. Below is some information on the “O” antiphons which the Church uses in Her liturgy preparing for Christmas. Have a Blessed Week. Fr. Harrigan Pastor The “O Antiphons” refer to the seven antiphons that are recited (or chanted) preceding the Magnificat during Vespers of the Liturgy of the Hours. They cover the special period of Advent preparation known as the Octave before Christmas, December 17-23, with December 24 being Christmas Eve and Vespers for that evening being for the Christmas Vigil. On the evening of December 17 the final phase of preparation for Christmas begins with the first of the great “O Antiphons” of Advent. These prayers are seven jewels of liturgical song, one for each day until Christmas Eve. They seem to sum up all our Advent longing for the Savior. The “O Antiphons” are intoned with special solemnity in monasteries at Vespers, before and after the Magnificat, Mary’s prayer of praise and thanksgiving from the Gospel of Luke (2:42-55), which is sung every evening as the climax of this Hour of the Divine Office. A vestige of the “Great O’s” can be seen in verses of the familiar Advent hymn, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”. The importance of “O Antiphons” is twofold: Each one highlights a title for the Messiah: O Sapientia (O Wisdom), O Adonai (O Lord), O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse), O Clavis David (O Key of David), O Oriens (O Rising Sun), O Rex Gentium (O King of the Nations), and O Emmanuel. Also, each one refers to the prophecy of Isaiah of the coming of the Messiah.

Did You Know?/¿Sabia Usted? Set guidelines for holiday visits to ensure your child’s safety: Your holiday plans may include spending a few nights at a family member or friend’s house, possibly with all the kids piling into a few rooms to sleep. Before you go, remind your kids about their body boundaries and what to do if someone violates those limits. Explain which areas are okay for others to touch and what areas are off limits. Inform the child that any areas that would be covered by underwear or swimsuits are off limits. For more information on helping a child establish boundaries, a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Teaching Boundaries,” email [email protected] or call 213-637-7227.

Advent

As we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Advent

we learn how our God came into the world

under less than perfect circumstances: a virgin with child, a couple betrothed but not yet living together, a righteous man named Joseph, and angel with message.

At the end of all this we have the unthinkable: it all works out!

If the miracle of Jesus’ birth came about in less than perfect circumstances and still resulted in humankind’s salvation, why should we doubt that good can come from our own imperfect circumstances? Recycling:

We continue to do our little bit to save the earth by recycling and teaching the children the importance of doing so. If you need further information on any of the above

programs please call Sister Mary or Lorena at 310-833-3541 ext. 222, 221.

BAPTISMS

visit the Parish office to receive a Baptism Registration Package or download the information from the Parish website.

We ask parents, once they have completed the

registration form, to please call the Parish office to make an appointment regarding the baptism.

Thank you.
