Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners:

Rejoice, we are almost there. Today we celebrate Gaudete Sunday, below is an abbreviated article on the meaning of this special Sunday in Advent, I hope you enjoy it.

Have a Blessed Week.

Fr. Harrigan Pastor Why is one candle not like all the others? Advent and its counterpart, Lent, are seasons of penitence. On the Advent wreath, the three purple candles mark the preparation Christians undergo while awaiting the arrival of Christ on Earth. But, unlike our Lent, Advent is usually a happy season, full of food, parties, shopping, music and lights. In the retail world, Christmas begins right after Halloween and then kicks into overdrive on the day after Thanksgiving. Many people mirror this, barely putting away the leftover turkey before putting up every Christmas decoration they own. While this calendar is fine for secular society, it has nothing to do with the Child at the heart of the season. He won’t be here until Christmas Eve, and all the early bird sales in the world won’t speed that up. That’s why it’s traditional to refrain from putting the Christ Child into a Catholic church’s Nativity scene manger until the appointed moment. So, why do we need a reminder to rejoice on the Third Sunday of Advent, called Gaudete Sunday (Latin for “rejoice”) by lighting a rose-colored candle on our wreaths and having priests wear rose-colored vestments at Mass?

Because the happiness that comes from fun and friends and a full belly is not the same thing as Christian joy. During a Mass in May at Casa Santa Martha in Rome, Pope Francis talked about the difference between happiness and joy: “To be happy is good, yet joy is something more. It’s another thing, something which does not depend on external motivations, or on passing issues: it is more profound. It is a gift. “To be ‘happy at all moments, at all cost,’ can at the end turn into superficiality and shallowness. This leaves us without Christian wisdom, which makes us dumb, naïve, right? All is joy … no. Joy is something else; it is a gift from the Lord.” If joy is a gift from the Lord, then the Lord Himself is our first and greatest gift, and the only one that will never tarnish or break or fade. Gaudete – said “Gow-DAY-tay” – Sunday reminds us that the gift has not yet arrived, but it’s very near. It takes its name from the first word of the Introit, “Gaudete in Domino Semper,” which is Latin for the introduction of Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always.”

JUBILEE—YEAR OF MERCY-PILGRIMAGE IN ROME

Pope Francis announced the Holy Year of Mercy, which begins on December 8th, 2015. The Pope typically announces a jubilee every 25 years. The main focus of this Holy Year, is to evoke the concept of forgiveness. In this spirit St. Anthony Croatian Catholic Parish will organize a pilgrimage to Rome. Between March 31st and April 11th, 2016, under guidance of Fr. Goran Jovicic. During our pilgrimage in Rome we will participate on Saturday April 1st, at the conference about Divine Mercy, pilgrimage to the Holy Doors and at the Vespers with Pope Francis. The culmination of this event will be the Divine Mercy Sunday's celebrations with the Pope. During our trip we will be visiting the holy sights, and the tombs of the Apostles. Our next destination during our pilgrimage will be Assisi and/or Padre Pio's tomb in San Giovanni Rotondo. This a great opportunity for our spiritual growth and to know each other better. Our pilgrimage last year was an unforgettable life's experience! I would like to encourage our parishioners and all other brothers and sisters in faith who are interested to participate. Croatians and Italians could stay in their countries after our pilgrimage to visit their relatives. Registrations are at our Office (only Tuesdays and Thursdays) at 213 628 2938 and at: [email protected]

St. Gertrude Purgatory Prayer Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.

Advent Prayer O Almighty God, gracious provider and giver of life, we anxiously await the celebration of your birth. Like the people of long ago, our ancestors in faith, we, too, are in need of light, in need of direction, in need of your

Word, to show us the way. Our busy lives and the consumerism that surrounds us make it difficult to recognize your kingdom and to hear your voice. Help us Lord, to focus on you. We pray that you hear our prayer in the name of Jesus. Amen.

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT JOY is the theme of the readings for today. The prophet Zephaniah invites us to "shout for JOY ... to sing joyfully" because the Lord is in our midst. Even God is in a mode of rejoicing, celebrating with us as we prepare for the grand festival of Jesus' birth. Paul challenges us to REJOICE in the Lord always. Let us not let this

time of getting ready pass by. As we go about shopping, decorating, baking and preparing our home let us do so in a spirit of prayer. Let us take time to WAIT JOYFULLY, PONDER THE GREAT MYSTERY OF JESUS' BIRTH AND BEHOLD HIM IN WONDER.
