PASTOR’S CORNER

The Synod’s End: What the Catholic Church can Offer to the World

The Synod on the Family has come to a close in Rome. The following address was given to Pope Francis and the Synod Fathers by Dr. Anca-Maria Cernea, President of the Association of Catholic Doctors of Bucharest (Romania). The Romanian Catholic Church is one of over twenty “particular” (or “sui iuris”) Catholic churches in union with Rome. The Romanian church survived “underground” for many years under Communist persecution, and kept the faith alive and strong. As a doctor and a faithful Romanian Catholic, Dr. Cernea’s address has a special importance for us all. Your Holiness, Synod Fathers, Brothers and Sisters, I represent the Association of Catholic Doctors from Bucharest. I am from the Romanian Greek Catholic Church. My father was a Christian political leader who was imprisoned by the communists for 17 years. My parents were engaged to marry, but their wedding took place 17 years later. My mother waited all those years for my father, although she didn’t even know if he was still alive. They were heroically faithful to God and to their engagement. Their example shows that God’s grace can overcome terrible social circumstances and material poverty. We, as Catholic doctors defending life and family, can see that this is first of all a spiritual battle. Material poverty and consumerism are not the primary cause of the family crisis. The primary cause of the sexual and cultural revolution is ideological. Our Lady of Fatima has said that Russia’s errors would spread all over the world. It was first done under a violent form, classical Marxism, by killing tens of millions. Now it’s being done mostly by cultural Marxism. There is continuity from Lenin’s sexual revolution, through Gramsci and the Frankfurt school, to the current-day gay-rights and gender ideology. Classical Marxism pretended to redesign society through the violent take-over of property. Now the revolution goes deeper; it pretends to redefine family, sexual identity and human nature. This ideology calls itself “progressive”. But it is nothing else than the ancient serpent’s offer to man to take control, to replace God, and to arrange salvation here in this world. It is an error of religious nature: it is Gnosticism. It is the task of the shepherds to recognize this, and warn the flock against this danger. “Seek ye therefore first the Kingdom of God, and His justice, and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Mat. 6:33) The Church’s mission is to save souls. Evil in this world comes from sin. Not from income disparity or “climate change”. The solution is: Evangelization. Conversion. Not an ever increasing government control. Not a world government. Today, these are the main agents imposing cultural Marxism upon our nations under the form of population control, reproductive health, gay rights, gender education, and so on. What the world needs nowadays is not limitation of freedom, but real freedom, liberation from sin. Salvation. Our Church (the Romanian Catholic Church) was suppressed by the Soviet occupation. But none of our twelve bishops betrayed their communion with the Holy Father. Our Church survived thanks to our bishops’ determination and example in resisting prisons and terror. Our bishops asked the community not to follow the world, not to cooperate with the communists. Now we need Rome to tell the world: “Repent of your sins and turn to God for the Kingdom of Heaven is near” (Mat. 3:2). Not only us, the Catholic laity, but also many Orthodox Christians are anxiously praying for this Synod. Because, as they say, if the Catholic Church gives in to the spirit of the world, it is going to be very difficult for all other Christians to resist it. Dr. Anca-Maria Cernea, President of the Association of Catholic Doctors of Bucharest (Romania). Friday, October 16th, 2015 Rome, Italy

Retreat with Father Cassian DiRocco

Pope Saint John Paul II—“The Pope of the Family”—gave the first and most energetic years of his Pontificate to proclaiming the good news of marriage, the family, and human sexuality through his powerful and beautiful catechesis, “The Theology of the Body”. This weekend retreat is offered for engaged couples preparing for Holy Matrimony, and for couples who are already married, helping them to understand more fully the gift of God’s plan for human life and love as lived in the marital bond, and expressed through the marital embrace. The retreat is offered in the Parish Center chapel from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., including adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Saturday, and Holy Mass on Sunday. In addition to the retreat conferences, couples will have time for prayer, reflection, quiet, and conversation. While breakfast and refreshments are provided, each couple is asked to bring their own lunch. Please note that we do not have sleeping facilities at the parish, and so each person must have a place to stay on Saturday evening. Please also note that this retreat is for adults only; no children, please. We ask a donation of $50 per couple (not per person), and registration is done via phone to the parish office at the number listed above no later than three days before the retreat. Couples attending commit to being present for the entire weekend; no late arrivals or early departures, please.

God Bless our Veterans!

Thank you for all you have done and continue to do!

"We enjoy great freedoms in the United States. Let us never forget the men and women who have laid their lives on the

line to defend and protect our precious liberties. The annual celebration of Veterans Day invites us to remember those killed in the line of duty, those still suffering the effects of their generous response in times of national need, and, of

course, everyone who has retired from active duty. We cannot forget the sacrifices of so many. We sense an obligation to

express our gratitude, and we certainly remember them in our prayers." ~ Archbishop Broglio
