partment of Foreign Affairs.

    ‘Tiu’ retire ornot to retire

The first time I met Chris was during a flight to Boracay. We were seated in the samerow. He was with the entire

Ateneo basketball team. He was already famous back then, but he had no star com-plex at all. Chris made me feelat ease so I fired away withmy questions.

Personally, I wish Chris would stay put in the PBA. Ienjoy watching his “Tiutorial”segment where he teacheskids the basics of basketball.

Amid the hustle and bustle of the ball game, Chris’ poster-boy charm is always a refresh-ing sight. The Rain or ShineElasto Painters’ heartthrob hasdefinitely left his mark on the

    hearts of every basketball-crazy Pinoy.

    Here’s my one-on-one withChris:

What will make you de-cide to retire or not?

It will depend on the de-mands of my other commit-ments such as my business

ventures (both personal andfamily-owned) and family.

What’s your most unfor-gettable experience in the

    PBA?It wasn’t exactly a memo-rable experience. It was when

we lost to Talk ’n’ Text by twopoints in Game 7 of the Finalsin double overtime. I really thought we had that champi-onship in the bag. I also won’tforget the day I was draftedby Rain or Shine and the timeI won the three-pointshootout.

Do you plan to coach inthe future?

I have no immediate plans.I want to pursue a career inbusiness first. Maybe whenI’m done with that…in 10 to20 years, I will considercoaching. I want to coach highschool or college teams be-cause those are the formative

years of an athlete—both interms of skill and values for-mation.

How does your wifeClarisse feel about your planto retire?

She was sad when I toldher I was considering retiring, primarily because she has de-

veloped friendships with theteam members and their

wives. But of course, she alsoknows how important basket-

ball is to me.What’s your message to

your fans?I was overwhelmed by the

messages of support when thisissue came out. It makes retir-ing a lot harder. I thoughtthey have grown tired of me,but apparently there are stillmany people who want to seeme play. I was surprised whenthey all came out on Twitter. I

     want to thank my supporters

and the Rain or Shine fans fortheir unwavering support. It isbecause of them that I am mo-tivated to give my best andfind a deeper purpose in every game.

    BB reinvented

It has been six years sinceBB Gandanghari burst ontothe local scene as a proudtransgender woman.

When she heard of the Valkyrie incident concerningtransgender Veejay Floresca,

who was barred from theclub, her interest was piqued.“This is a tricky issue…this isnot about gender preference,

but about gender sensitivity,”she pointed out. “This contro- versy teaches us to be moresensitive and more aware of other people’s rights.”

As for the landmark deci-sion of the Supreme Court, al-lowing gay marriage in theUnited States? “I am for mar-riage equality,” she said. “I’veseen gay couples who were to-gether for 30 years, but whenone of them got sick, the part-ner didn’t even have the legalright to visit him in the hospi-tal.”

She hopes that the Philip-pines will follow suit. “We stillhave a long way to go. Is itbecause the Philippines is apredominantly Catholic coun-try? But so is Ireland and itapproved same-sex marriage,”she said. “At least, now we aretalking about it. Sooner or lat-er…change would come.”

    In her own personal strug-

gles, BB was fully aware thatit was easier to give up, butshe was no quitter. The hard-ships only affirmed her deci-sion to face the world head-on.

Career-wise, she is cookingup solo projects with BeehiveIdea Garage Co. (Those inter-ested in tapping BB for pro-

     jects can e-mail [email protected].)

    To prepare for this new

chapter in her life and career,BB has been expanding herrepertoire of talents. “I stud-ied arnis, kickboxing, aerial

yoga, ballet,” she said. “I eventook up motorcycle riding.”

Will BB reinvent herself asan action queen?

The world will surely bene-fit from BB’s story of integrity, authenticity, discipline andperseverance. Other youngtransgenders will surely learna lot from her story.

    By Dolly Anne Carvajal

C AGER Chris Tiu became a trend-ing topic on Twitter when it

was reported that he might quit

playing in the Philippine Basketball As-sociation (PBA). The Ateneo hard-courtsensation joined the professional league in 2012.Chris is still very much at his peak. It’s way too ear-ly for him to retire.
