Will Petronovelahave happy ending?By Randolph B. Leongson

USUALLY, dramatic scenes are best saved forteleseryes. Thats not the case in the PBA asthey have their own brewing drama anthol-

ogy in Petronovela. But after two conferences

of power struggles, unwantedencounters, and dismal exits,it seems like a happy endingis just waiting in thecrosshairs for the Blaze Boost-ers.

Finishing at the top of theGovernors Cup eliminations

with an 8-1 record, Petron dis-patched crowd favorites Gine-bra to barge into the semifi-nals. And the team is showingno signs of slowing down.

Its a good thing that thePetron players are focused, said Petron coach Gee Abanil-la, who was just elevated tothe post before the start of theconference.

Our immediate goal hasbeen accomplished. We arenow part of the semis, hesaid. Were aiming for some-thing higher. Andito na tayoso we have to make the bestout of it. Our focus is to im-prove ourselves, individuallyand as a team.

The need to keep on im-proving was echoed by one ofits team captains, ArwindSantos. The lanky formerFEU King Tamaraw said,Masaya kami na naka-pasok kami sa semis atdi pa naputol yung

winning streaknamin, referring totheir nine-game win-ning roll after losing

    their first game againstMeralco.

Sana magtuloy-tuloy.Lahat naman possible bas-tat pangangalagaan namin

yung ilalaro namin at patu-loy kaming magi-improve.

Abanilla, the long-time as-sistant coach, has seen it allfor the franchisethe champi-onships before and thestruggles of late. He eyesto put all those bad mem-

ories in the past with a confer-

    ence to remember.

Were blessed that wehave players who are willingto accept the roles and are un-selfish, who work hard, and

we have a really good import.I also think that the coachesreally worked hand-in-hand tobuild this team, he said. Notto mention our prayerbrigades. Ang daming nag-dadasal para sa amin.

The shortcomings the teamhas had throughout this sea-

son have made the team astronger one, and Alex Cabag-not acknowledges it, saying,Any experience is a good ex-perience if youll learn from it.

All those things weve beenthrough, good or bad, weredefinitely learning from it.

I think the players arewise. Theyre smart about itand I know for a fact that theyreally want to excel and win, added Abanilla.

Those players are the sameones leading in the individualplums, with Santos in thethick of the Best Player of theConference and MVP races, and No. 1 pick Junemar Fajar-do a candidate for this yearsRookie of the Year award.

Isa yun sa mga blessingsna dapat nating ipagpasala-mat kung ibibigay man ngPBA at ng Diyos. Pero iba parin yung nahahawakan, nayayakap, at naki-kiss natin

yung trophy, Santos said.Fajardo, a member of the

silver medal-winning GilasPilipinas team, added, Iniisipko lang na mag-champion. Re-

ward na kung mapili kami.Pero mas maganda kung

    champion kami para happylahat.

Cabagnot said thattheir team is very upbeaton this position rightnow but we know thatour job is not doneyet.

Abanilla said,Were still a work inprogress. Wala panamang kasigu-raduhan ito eh.

    For me, youll

always have goalsbut we dontworry what thefuture will beright now. What were fo-cusing on iswhat we

could do, andright now,we controlour destiny

    by doing certain

things that we want. Our phi-

losophy, our objective, these arejust guides for us to get better. Wedont worry about the future. Well

just stay focused to whats hap-pening right now, he said.

For fans of drama, the protago-

nists hardships are just a hurdlefor the culmination of his victoryin the end. Does the Petronovelaend with the 2013 Governors Cuptrophy in tow once the curtaincloses?

Long season ends forMVP candidate TenorioBy Randolph B. Leongson

IN his first full season with the Barangay Gine-bra San Miguel, LA Tenorio might have playedhis most exhausting year as a professional bas-

    ketball player.

Anchoring the crowd fa-vorites in the first two confer-ences, including a runner-upfinish in the CommissionersCup, then lending his talents tothe silver medal-winning GilasPilipinas national team at the2013 Fiba Asia Championship, the former Ateneo Blue Eagle fi-nally felt the fatigue as Ginebraended the season with a 101-94loss to the Petron Blaze Boost-ers in the Governors Cup quar-terfinals.

Kanina ko na talaga naram-daman yung pagod, the 5-foot-7 Nasugbu, Batangas nativesaid. Ginawa ko na lahat, guarding the import, offenseand defense, talagang kinulanglang kami sa effort.

Tenorio was obviously disap-pointed on how their seasonended but looked at the silverlinings of their exit.

Pinaghirapan din namin eh.Tutal nandito na naman kami,

sayang naman. Gusto namingmag-tuloy-tuloy, pero di kamipinalad, he said. Siguro on

the brighter side of this ismakakapagpahinga sa amin

yung mga may injuries.Makakapagpahinga din ako.

Though they wanted anothercrack for the championship thisconference, Tenorio welcomesthe rest, given that his wife ispregnant for their second childand is due to give birth by De-cember.

Siguro three to four weeksna pahinga lang, tapos syempre, pagbabantay sa wife ko, he

said. Well still be looking for-ward sa start ng next season.

Still, Tenorio hopes that hiscase for the Most Valuable Play-er plum gets a string considera-tion.

Of course, Im still hoping,he said. Kung ibibigay sa akin,if Im deserving to get thataward, why not? Kung may iba, lets see. Theres always nexttime, but Im still hoping kasithis season Im very consistent.

Despite injuries, coming fromFiba, pinaghirapan ko rin eh,but well see.

Salud proud of PBA contribution to Gilas PilipinasBy Denison Dalupang

    I WAS confident. Even when

Gilas Pilipinas faced the great-est adversity during its run dur-ing the 27th Fiba Asia tourna-ment, PBA commissioner ChitoSalud never wavered in hisfaith that the team couldachieve history.

Despite bowing to Chinese-Taipei via a cardiac showdownand then losing Marcus Douthitto injury during the secondquarter of the knockout semifi-nal against South Korea, Saludknew that the players honed in

the PBA would find a way topull through.

    Nakita naman natin yun,

said Salud. Should you let iterode your confidence? Certain-ly not. Thats the beauty of theFIBA competition--you just haveto bring your A-game all thetime.

Salud, who was able towatch every single Gilas gameexcept for the Taiwan match,

was firm with how the PH quin-tet would fare in the Asianqualifiers. He also noted thatthe handpicked talents--who

    were mostly sourced from the

Philippine Basketball Associa-tion--were perfect for hostilitieslike the FIBA-Asia.

These guys are professionals. If there are players who can ad-just to calls easily, its them. Theyare most, if not always, at theirpeak. They pace themselves toadjust and they are wired to nev-er back down, he added.

You saw how [Marc] Pingrisworked his butt out there. Yousaw how Jayson [Castro] did,Salud noted.

Our boys play alongside andagainst imports (during the PBAseason) and that turned out to

be an advantage.Salud said he felt immense

    pride watching the players from

the PBA carry the cudgels forthe national team during thecrucial semifinal match againstSouth Korea. And he believesthat with proper coordination, the national program and thepro league can continue to

work hand-in-hand for morevictories in the internationalfronteven with the problem ofscheduling.

If good men reason togeth-er, there will always be a solu-tion, said Salud.

Siguro on thebrighter side ofthis ismakakapagpa-hinga sa amin

    yung mga mayinjuries.Makakapag-pahinga din ako.

BRIGHT SIDELA Tenorio sees thepositive side of losing.

    THROUGHOUThis eight yearprofessional ca-

reer, Jay Washingtonhas seen it all. He has

experienced what itfeels to be on top, buthas struggled in the lat-er part of his career.

Dealt to the GlobalportBatang Pier at the start of theGovernors Cup, the 31-year-old Eckerd College alumnusfound a new lease on life ashes once again placed at theforefront of the battle with

veterans Gary David, SolMercado, and Willie Miller.

I got a lot of minutes nowthat I felt like I could still playand be productive, Washing-ton said. It was frustrating inPetron to not play and just sitat the bench. Im at the pointof my career now where Idont know how many more

years I can still play. The former No. 1 pick was

quick to quash the doubtsthrown at him saying, Imight be getting older, but I

still feel like Im in my prime. It feels good to be able toplay on the floor again andget my rhythm back.

Being with the Batang Pierforces Washington to take thedrivers seat in leading therest of their fairly inexperi-enced crew. And the 2011Philippine Cup Best Player ofthe Conference welcomes thechallenge.

Leading by example, whether it be doing extrawork or just playing hard orhaving the right type of atti-tude getting into the gym,he said. Our younger guys, they look for someone likethat whos been in the leaguefor a little while, who has

won a couple of champi-onships, won a lot of playoffgames. I dont really need tosay a whole lot but just try-ing to lead by my actions.

    That attitude must have

    helped a lot as Globalport

booked its first postseasonappearance in Washingtonsfirst conference with theteam. The Batang Pier bowedout of the quarterfinals, how-ever, as they fell short inforcing a do-or-die gameagainst Rain or Shine, 108-106.

We should try to buildfrom there. We need to get

    more comfortable with the

system, the players, andcoaches. It got me a lot oftime to get there, but Imstarting to fit in with my roleto the team, he said. I think

we need more camaraderie. When times get hard, yourteam gets closer. We justneed time and if guys decideto buy to the system and

    want to be here, greater

    things are still to come.

    verse this curse, all he

    needs is a lady's kiss.Mga Kuwento ni

Lola Basyang is highlypraised for its playfulcostumes and set de-sign.

Costume designersRon Alfonso and BoniJuan used householditems like spoons, laundry clips, puzzletiles and hand-sewnrags to adorn thecharacters. The setdesign by Mel Bernar-

    do is similarly inven-

tive, as it folds, un-folds, rolls on wheel,

    and uses ladders,slides, platforms andboxes.

Director Phil Nobleallows his actors to

jump and slidethrough the set thattransforms from cas-tle to house, or evena river.

Noble's directioncan easily be dis-missed as complex,

    but his love for drama

and movement expelsa youthful energy to

the entire perfor-mance. He draws in-spiration from the cir-cus performances he

watched during fies-tas in his hometownTaal, Batangas.

SHOWBUZZ WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 201310ROMEL M. LALATA, Editor

    John Arcilla spectacular

His movie, Metro Manila(helmed and cowritten by ac-claimed British director SeanEllis), bagged the Audience

Award in the World Cinema-Dramatic section of the Sun-dance Film Festival.

Also in the film are JakeMacapagal and Althea Vega,

who play a poverty-strickencouple from the MountainProvince seeking greener pas-tures in chaotic Metro Manila.

It will represent the UnitedKingdom in the best foreign

language category of the 86thOscars derby. Johns portrayalof a tough security officer hasdrawn spectacular reviews fromforeign critics.

Kudos, John for bringinghome the bacon. Our country is

in dire need of that kind ofpork these days.

What made Metro Manilaclinch the Sundance award?

The plot is very simple, verymainstream. But its texture, the shot composition, andSeans point of view blend well

with his storytelling and honestphilosophy about art and reali-tythese elements made thefilm powerful. As actors, weblended well with his inten-tions.

    How did your involvement

with the project start? When I auditioned, I wasnt

really excited. I knew Sean wasan Oscar nominee for his shortfilm (Cashback). I thought, howcould someone from a differentcountry write a good film about

us? That kept bugging me evenafter I auditioned, especially

when he said he visited thePhilippines only once. He got

inspired by a scene he saw be-tween two security guards.

In 2011, he started the pro-ject. A lot of things were goingon in our country that year andI thought I wouldnt accept it ifan outsider mocked our situa-

tion. He gave me the script, andas soon as I started reading, I

was hooked! Suddenly, I feltlucky. Its a good thing that

Sean decided to do it here in-stead of in another country.

Tell us about your Sun-dance experience.

Utah was snowy. Sean andJake were not even planning tostay until the fests end. I guess

Sean didnt want to expect, butI was ready to stay until theend. I told him and his wifeTillythat I would stay becausesomebody had to receive ourtrophy. They thought I wascrazy!

We saw how delegates fromdifferent countries received ourfilm. There were standing ova-tions and tears. My intuition

was right. When the emceecalled Metro Manila, Icouldnt stop myself from shout-ing!

    Why is Metro Manila amust-see?

The theme is so universalthat everyone can relate to itstake on sacrifice and survival. Itcan happen in any city. AndSean is one hell of an artist.

Whats the difference be-tween working with a Filipinocrew and a foreign one?

From Amigo to The BourneLegacy, to Metro Manila, mostcrews are mixed. Pinoys are socompetent that they can workreliably even under pressure.Foreigners were so impressedby our crews professionalism.

I must say that the disciplineof an eight-hour work schedulematters to them. I think that

will also make a differencehere. I would really love forthat to happen in our industry.

Tell us about your close en-counters with Hollywoodstars.

Rachel Weisz and I had timeto talk (on the set ofBourne). She was so bothered by theshanties and poverty. She won-dered what the government wasdoing about it. She was so niceand very down-to-earth.

    Whats your formula forgood acting?

Analyze the script. Be real.Listen to coactors. Explore, playaround, go out of the box butdont lose respect for others

    work. Acting is a collaborativeprocess.

What tips do you give as-piring actors?

Everyone is an actor. The on-ly difference between profes-sionals and everyone else is thatthey do not mind doing it againand again in front of cameras, for a purpose that is bigger thanthem.
