TODAY’S fixtures

FA COMPETITIONS take centre stage again this weekend with rounds of the FA Vase and FA Trophy dominating the fixture lists.

The pick of the Vase ties involving Wessex League clubs sees Horndean travel to Winchester City, aiming to knock out one of the favourites to win the com-petition overall.

In the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division, Petersfield can go back to the top of the table with a win this afternoon.

Moneyfields are waiting in the wings though to capitalise on any mistakes, if they can get a win at Bournemouth.

Game of the day in the division sees two high flying clubs go head to head when Brockenhurst and Whitchurch United meet in the New Forest.

Blackfield and Langley will be aiming to keep up with the pace at the top of the table when they take on lowly Totton and Eling.

GOOD afternoon to everyone attending today’s match at Love Lane, including the players, officials and supporters from Hamworthy United and the match officials.

It’s good to return to league action this afternoon af-ter a run of three cup games over the last week or two. Those matches brought a decent return for the club – through to the next round in two competitions and a very spirited performance against a strong Gosport Borough side in the Russell Cotes Cup.

That now leaves the first team still in three cup com-petitions – Hampshire Senior Cup, Portsmouth Senior Cup and Wessex League Cup.

Going into the start of November, to be in those competitions and well in the hunt for the league title, that makes for excellent reading at this stage of the season and represents a strong start to the campaign.

It’s good for the club to be involved in all of the discussions and predictions about the title race for the Wessex Premier Division.

Many people are saying that this is the widest open the league has been for many years and it can only be good news for the competition to have so many teams in contention for the title.

Here at Petersfield, it is flattering to be spoken of alongside clubs who have been established at this level for far longer than us.

However, we are keeping our feet firmly on the ground at this moment in time. The key, as the old foot-ball saying goes, is to take one game at a time and we are looking no further ahead than playing Hamworthy at home this afternoon. We need to keep getting three points to stay up with the front runners.

MANAGER’S notes

I WOULD like to welcome Hamworthy United to Love Lane this afternoon for this Premier Division encounter.

I would also like to extend my best wishes to Stewart Kearn in his new role at Hamworthy. I wish him all the best – obviously apart from in today’s game against us!

We have just gone through a period of playing three cup games in a row and I am pleased with the way they have gone for us.

Against Gos-port we put in a decent display against a very ex-perienced team and we should not be too unhappy with the manner in which we went out of the Russell Cotes Cup.

At Tadley we got the kind of game we were expecting. They worked very hard against us and although the condi-tions didn’t suit our nor-mal game,

I was pleased that we dug in to come through this League Cup tie.

In the Portsmouth Senior Cup against Paulsgrove on Tuesday night, a number of our squad players and reserve team got the chance to show everyone what

they can do and I was impressed by many of their performances.

They certainly gave me plenty to think about in terms of where they feature in my plans.

Today though we are back in league action and a chance to go back to the top of the table if we win.

As I have said before it is fantastic to find ourselves at the top end of the table at this stage of the season.

However, we only look to the next game rather than

trying to predict what might happen.

So today it is important that we do things right to ensure we pick up the three points.

All the best.

Sus

I’m generally pleased with the performances in our trio of recent cup games

Tadley Calleva 1Petersfield Town 2

PETERSFIELD Town had to wait until the very last minute of extra time to book their place in the third round of the Wes-sex League Cup last Saturday.

Substitute Drew Moore came off the bench to fire home the winner in the 119th minute after the Rams had to hang on for large periods of the game in the face of the pressure put on them by their Division 1 hosts.

Ironically this game became a level playing field due to the playing field – the long grass was not conducive to Peters-field’s usual passing game but it did suite Tadley’s more direct style.

After three minutes the ball dropped to Callum Bush after the Petersfield defence tried three times to head the ball clear but his first time volley went straight to Matt Shortt. On 11 minutes Petersfield showed what their quick passing and movement could do when Warren Hunt received the ball on the edge of the penalty area and laid it off into the path of Andy Todd but his shot went wide.

Tadley had the ball in the net on 17 minutes when they worked it up into the box to Brett Denham. His shot was head-ing into the top corner until Shortt threw himself to his right to make a fine one handed save. From the rebound the ball was played into the centre of the goal-mouth and bundled over the line but the effort was ruled out for offside.

The home side took the lead though on 22 minutes when Jack James’ attempt to control the ball got caught in the long grass but Denham nipped in to take the ball up to the penalty area before hitting a low shot under Shortt and into the net.

Petersfield responded with a period of dominance. A free kick from the right by Danny Thompson was missed by the keeper and Ed Dryden’s attempt to hook the ball home found the side netting.

Hunt’s cross from the left found Todd at the far post but his header dropped just over the target and Hunt then worked himself some room in the penalty area to shoot but his effort was always looping away from the goal.

The Rams inevitably drew level on 33 minutes when a free kick from the left hand edge of the box found Todd on the penalty spot and he headed into the net.

The Rams should have gone in front when keeper Tom Hindmarsh missed a backpass, Todd took it around him and then squared the ball to Hunt but a de-fender blocked his shot.

The home side dominated the second half in terms of chances and Petersfield had Shortt to thank for keeping them in the game. On 54 minutes Shortt had to make a save at his near post after Denham had broken through and on 67 minutes Denham was put clear on goal again but Shortt blocked his shot.

On 72 minutes Denham raced clear yet again and Shortt blocked his shot with his body and then Scott Kinge had a shot blocked by a defender and Den-ham’s follow up attempt was saved again.

Petersfield snatched the winning goal with just a minute left of play after the tense period of extra time was almost at an end.

Benny Read crossed from the left and the ball started rebounding around the penalty before it rolled into the path of Moore, who hit a low first time shot past the keeper and into the far corner.

Goal in final minute of extra time puts Petersfield through

RETRO rams

EVERY programme this season will fea-ture a story from the files of the Peters-field Post – Petersfield Town FC’s official media partner.

Today we go back to January 17, 1990, and a report on Petersfield’s first win of the 1990s.

It was a 2-1 home victory over East-bourne United and the picture above shows Russell Phelps in action during the game.

Richie Reynolds was manager of the Rams at the time and the pitch at Love Lane was described as being extremely muddy that day.

Simon Webb should have put the home side in front on 12 minutes but with only the keeper to beat, he shot straight at him. John Daubney then missed an open goal for Eastbourne.

Petersfield took the lead on 40 min-utes when Bruce Johnstone took the ball past three defenders before crossing to the far post where Webb’s powerful header found the back of the net.

The Rams continued to dominate in the second half and they doubled their lead five minutes after half time.

Johnstone took advantage of some slack defending to get clear of the East-bourne defence before slidding the ball past the advancing goalkeeper.

Petersfield sat back a bit after this goal and that allowed Eastbourne to come into the game more.

The visitors grabbed a goal five min-utes before the end when keeper Dave Woodnutt dropped Daubney’s corner and Edwards slammed the loose ball into the roof of the net.

Gosport Borough 1Petersfield Town 0

THEY may have lost the match but Pe-tersfield Town earned plenty of plaudits for their performance against a strong Conference South side.

Petersfield’s stock rose a few more levels as they more than held their own against an experienced Gosport line-up, which included former Pompey striker Ashley Harris and ex-Sholing forward Lee Wort, in this Russell Cotes Cup tie.

The Rams can count themselves unfortunate to be on the losing side after allowing Gosport to net an 82nd minute winner, just as a penalty shoot out was looming to settle this first round tie.

Neither keeper, Gosport’s Wayne Shaw or Petersfield’s Matt Shortt, had much to do throughout the game and both men barely had a serious save to make during the 90 minutes.

Gosport looked most dangerous in the opening 20 minutes when Wort worked himself some space in the penalty area but fired over the top, and Harris burst through but hit his first time shot over the crossbar.

The Rams grew into the game the longer it went on and they impressed the sizeable home crowd with the quality of their play.

On 24 minutes Jack James burst through into the penalty area but his tame shot went straight to Shaw and a minute later Joe Richardson flashed a shot just past the post.

Petersfield’s best chance came two minutes before half time when Ed Dryden’s (pictured above) header from a corner on the right flew across the face of goal and just missed the target.

Five minutes into the second half Andy Todd forced Shaw into making a save at his near post before on the hour mark, Wort turned his marker on the edge of the penalty area at the other end before shooting and he then put the rebound wide.

Gosport took the lead on 82 minutes when the ball was quickly played up to the edge of the box where it was laid off to Tom Dunford.

He curled his shot inside the post and Shortt was unable to keep it out after be-ing unsighted until it was too late to react to the shot.

Gosport substitute Justin Bennett then looked to increase the home side’s lead but he had a low shot easily saved by Shortt and another effort blocked and deflected over the crossbar.

The final piece of action saw Adam Wilde try his luck from distance but Shortt was more than a match for his effort and easily palmed it over the top.

Rams unlucky to lose out to Conference South Gosport
