Quick Write!

My Shortie

Using at least two words from vocabulary Lesson 16, write a mini-story about “My Shortie.”

• The mini-story must be 75-100 words long.

• It must be coherent—it has to make sense.

• Also, it can be funny.

• Or, it can be serious.

• You have 10 minutes.

If you have missed class (and were excused) do this . . .

1. Go to our course calendar online: www.mpsaz.org/mesa

2. Or use the calendar at the back of the room (if you must).

3. Write the TLA in your planner. Write any and all notes on Cornell notes paper. Do the assignments provided.

4. Collect any handouts you missed. They are in the “Junior English” slots in the shelves at the back of the room.

5. The number of days you have to make up your work = the number of days you were absent.

6. Schedule a time to make up tests or quizzes.

7. Unexcused absences = 0 (for work assigned and turned in).

Improving Graphic Design

Your Goal: Learn the definitions, synonyms and antonyms of your vocabulary words while at the same time revising the graphic design of the text to make it wayyyy hotter . . . and highly readable.

1. Scan pages 226-232 in the packet. Notice the editor’s graphic design. (Hint: It’s terrible.)

2. Notice the design: what types of information re-occur? (Hint: definitions, sentences, antonyms, synonyms)

o Decide how you will delineate (separate, distinguish) the vocab words themselves from the rest of the text. (Highlight, perhaps?)

o Decide how you’ll improve the design of other elements: antonyms, synonyms.

o Use 3 colors, minimum.

3. Begin your design, while at the same time having a group member read aloud each definition + all antonyms + synonyms.

4. When you’ve finished applying your design, begin the exercises (p. 233).
