Headmaster’s Corner

I hope you will all be able to join us for the Upper School Summer Concert at 7.00 pm on Tuesday 8th July. All the children taking part must sign in for supper. Performers should wear clean summer uniform.

Speech Day on Saturday 12th July starts with coffee at 10.30 am followed by speeches and prize giving at 11.00 am. Ladies are welcome to wear hats or fascinators if they wish.

Congratulations to Year 2 and Year 5 who have been awarded a Mufti Day (wear own clothes) next Wednesday for the highest amounts of monies raised on Fun Day (Year 2 = £268.89, Year 5 = £180.58). Well done!

Totally Tockington Treat

Our teams of intrepid journalists had an end of year party on Tuesday night with a Five Star picnic, created by Mrs Duncan. Lots of traditional party games were played before and after the food with the help of Mrs Gooch and her wicked whistle. The grand finale was a water balloon fight, which was wet and wonderful! Tom Edwards, as Editor-in-Chief, called for a hip-hip-hooray for Mrs Duncan, which was well-deserved indeed. He then gave everybody a party bag full of lovely goodies, which I know was very much appreciated.

I hope you all agree that Totally Tockington has had a great year with thirty children now writing for the papers and sixty-two editions behind us since its inauguration. This was a momentous year, when the group got so big that we needed to re-structure into two teams. We are hoping that there will more recruits to Team B (Years 3 to 6) in September, when Year 6 graduate to Team A. No doubt a cabinet re-shuffle will be needed, as we say goodbye to Helena as Editor of the Team B paper. I think you will all agree that she has been a fantastic team leader and we will miss her. Other members we bid a sad goodbye to are: Adassa Walker, Poppy Carter and Annabel Sheppard, all of whom have been 100% reliable and great reporters. We hope that they will continue to write for their next school’s paper and, if they don’t already have one, let’s hope they start one up

National Bookmark Competition

The winners of the National Bookmark Competition, which we entered on World Book Day, have just been announced. There were 25,000 entries and only six winners and runners-up! You will no doubt agree with me that some of our own entries were just as fantastic. We'll have another go next year! Meanwhile, enjoy using your own bookmarks in your reading books.

Milkshake Monday Morning

It was Milkshake Monday Morning for Year 6 this week and we had lovely fresh strawberry milkshakes and biscuits, which were yummy and made by our lovely kitchen ladies. We also read the first chapter of "Rooftoppers" by Katherine Rundell, which was a favourite with the majority of our Carnegie Medal Shadowing Group for its quirky and original narration. We highly recommend it to you.

National Athletics Championships at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham

Ellie Parker and Alex Grocott both competed in the National Finals at Birmingham on Wednesday in the 1500 metres. Ellie came 10th overall, beating the South West champion in the process.

Alex became National Champion, winning the U12 Boys’ race in a TMS record 4 minutes 53.2 seconds, knocking 1.4 seconds off his South West record achieved in the championships at Millfield a few weeks ago. Congratulations Alex and Ellie!

Class Photographs

Lower School and Upper School class photographs are on display in the back lobby and Owls, Robins and Wrens photographs are on display in the Nursery. Order envelopes have been sent home with all the children. If you would like to order one, please follow the instructions on the envelope.




Year 2 had a brilliant time re-enacting the Great Fire of London this week. Kirsty from the Freshwater Theatre Company was very impressed with their knowledge and enthusiasm.

Library Books, Reading and Summer Activities

As the year draws to a close and the library refurbishment approaches, we have asked the children to return all library books to the library. Inevitably, some books have gone "missing" and we are anxious to recover them, particularly those which we have had on loan from Gloucestershire Library Services, as we will have to pay for these books come September, which will mean fewer new books for the library. The list of GLS books is attached to an email I sent to you all this week. A handful has already been found. If you could check through bookshelves and under beds etc. for any of these books or other library books, which you feel might have come home with your children, that would be greatly appreciated.

There is a total amnesty on these books. If you could bring any of the named strays into school and hand them to a teacher, that would be very good indeed.

On the subject of book loans, the local public libraries are great places to visit in the holidays and have many activities on for children of all ages. It is important to keep up the reading habit in the holidays - hugely beneficial for the return to school and enormously pleasurable for you and your children. The Summer Reading Challenge is South Gloucs this summer is "Mythical Maze". The activities are free, drop-in activities and include Snakes and Mirrors, Dragon's Den and Puppet Power workshops. All activities are hands-on and fun. The Challenge itself involves reading 6 books to get a medal and a certificate. It is a lot of fun - do check it out on www.mythical-maze.org.uk orwww.southglos.gov.uk/libraries, or just drop in to your local library. If your child takes part in the challenge and is awarded a medal and certificate, please bring it in in September for your child to start off the new term with a mention in assembly.

If you are ever at a loss for what books to recommend to your children, I have reminded them of a website called LoveReading4Kids in assembly this week, where you will find many, many recommended reads and reviews from some of our own enthusiastic readers here in school. Another great website is What Should I Read Next? The website address is http://whatshouldireadnext.com/ Here you type in the name of a book you have enjoyed, and it makes suggestions about what you might like to read next – good quality and very useful for all age groups.

Handwriting and Presentation

The final Handwriting and Presentation Competition took place at the end of May and this time the children copied an extract from a book which they are reading. It was interesting to discover what everyone is reading and the standard of writing was very good. This time, we were joined by Year 2 in the competition. The winners’ work can be seen on the display board in the Back Lobby. The winners are:

Mr Perez took part in the Bristol Harbour Triathlon at the weekend.
