    General setup guidelines

The X60/120 should be placed below the screen (or

the surace that is to be studied) without covering thebottom o the screen or the person watching the screen.

The distance rom the persons eyes to the eyetracker should be approximate 70 cm (27.6 inches).

The eye tracker should be placed so that the gaze angle willnot exceed 35 to any point on the screen (see image tothe right).

It is very important to have the correct distance to thescreen, or the tracked object, otherwise the eye trackercannot track the entire area. I the screen or object is placedtoo close to the eye tracker there is a risk that the gazedata or the corners o the screen will not be collected (seeimage to the right). The correct distance can be calculated

by using basic trigonometry and including the gaze anglesand the screen size.

The user must always speciy all the positioning parameters included in the X120 Conguration tool. These are:

Eye tracker angleDistance to screenScreen angleActive Display AreaHeight dierence between screenand eye tracker

Please be as careul and preciseas possible when measuring

the required parameters in yoursetup. All parameters can haveboth positive and negative values. The values can be added both asmillimeters and inches. How to setup the dierent parameters will bedescribed on the ollowing pages.

    Measuring the Active Display Area

The correct screen size must always be added in the X120 conguration tool. For computer monitors, televisions and other displays measure the size o the visible active area on the screen, where you cansee the actual image. For projected screens measure the size o the visible projection on the screen. Ina scene camera setup the active display area must be calculated based on the calibration grid size, readmore about this in the scene camera chapter on pages 12-13.

    Accessing the X120 Confguration Tool

The Tobii X60 and X120 Eye Trackers can be used in many dierent

situations. For example, it can be used with any monitor or used toperorm eye tracking relative to a physical scene, a TV, or a projectionscreen. For all this to work, the user must provide some inormation tothe X60 or X120 eye tracker about the physical setup. This is doneusing the X120 Confguration tool.

To open the X120 Conguration Tool go to Windows Start > AllPrograms > Tobii > Tobii EyeTracker Browser. Or in Tobii Studiogo to Global Settings: Tools > Settings > Eye Tracker.

I the back othe eye tracker oot is located behind theactive display, enter a negative distance(use - in ront o the value).

Always make sure that the distance to theactive display is long enough or the eyetracker to track the entire area. Pleaseread the General Setup Guidelines onpage8 or more inormation.

Measuring the horizontal angle o the eye trackerMeasure the exact angle between thehorizontal plane and the eye tracker body. The angle indicator on the actual eyetracker should only serve as an roughindicator o the actual angle. Please usean angle measuring tool or getting thecorrect angle. In many setups the angle isusually around 30 degrees.

Measuring the vertical angle o the display or calibration gridMeasure the angle between the verticalplane and the active display. In a scenecamera setup measure the angle betweenthe vertical plane and the calibration gridused. I the display is tilted orwards youshould add a negative angle (use - inront o the value). I the active display iscompletely vertical the angle value is 0.In a scene camera setup where you wantto track objects on a horizontal table theangle would be 90 degrees.

Measuring the heightdierence between the display and eye tracker

Measure the height dierence betweenthe bottom o the eye tracker oot and thebottom o the active display area. Alwaysuse the visible active display as describedon the previous page. In a scene camerasetup measure the height dierencebetween the bottom o the virtual screen(which is 25% larger than the calibrationgrid) and the eye tracker oot, see pages12-13 or more inormation. Scene camera setup (tracking real objects)

Real objects, like magazines etc, can be used as stimulus in ascene camera setup where a video camera is lming the objectduring the recording. In this setup the calibration points cannotbe displayed on a screen during the calibration, thus a separatecalibration grid must be used. The grid can be drawn on apaper and include ve or nine points. The object you intend totrack should t within an area which is 25% larger than the actualcalibration grid. Always make sure that the eye tracker is ableto track the persons eyes over the entire calibration grid. Duringthe calibration procedure the person is asked to look at thecorresponding points in the grid.

All values in the X120 Confguration Tool must bemeasured and added correctly to ensure accuratedata (see previous pages on how to use the tool)additionally a calibration image (see image romStudio) rom the scene camera must be specied inTobii Studio (see how in the Tobii Studio manual).

The eye tracker is always calibrated against a two-dimensional surace, and all eye tracking data isin two dimensions. I eye tracking is to be done onthree-dimensional objects, parallax errors will beinduced. To minimize these errors always set up thescene camera overlooking the calibration area roman angle as close as possible to that o the personbeing eye tracked.

    Using the confguration

To start using the congurationentered in the tool, click Save toEyetracker. The parameters willthen be sent to the eye tracker andthe eye tracker will immediatelybe properly congured. Studio and include either ve or nine points. The calibration points can be drawn on a paper, marked ona calibration board, or marked on objects in the scene. It is also good to include the 25% larger ActiveDisplay Area (see below) around the grid to make it easier to measure the parameters required in theX120 Conguration Tool. Make sure that the corners o the calibration grid are exactly 90 degrees andthat the center point is exactly in the middle o the grid. How to calculate the 25% larger Active DisplayArea which needs to be added in the X120 Conguration Tool is described below:

Active Display Area Height = 1.25 Calibration grid height

Active Display Area Width = 1.25 Calibration grid width

The 25% larger virtual screen (Active Display Area) is used also when speciying the other parameters inthe X120 Conguration Tool, like distance rom the eye tracker to the screen and the height dierencebetween the eye tracker and the screen. See images below.

Eye calibration o a person is done with the manual calibration routine in Tobii Studio. The personconducting the study has to manually step through the calibration points by asking the person in ronto the eye tracker to look at the rst calibration point, and when he does so, press the space bar. Thenhave him look at the second calibration point, and so on.

Example o a nine and ve point calibration grid.

Tobii X60 and X120 Eye Tracker

    Basic monitor setup

When using the X60/120 together with a computer monitor congure Windows to use the stimulus

presentation screen as the primary screen. An additional optional secondary monitor can be used ormonitoring the eye movements during the recording by using the Live Viewer unction in Tobii Studio. For this option the graphics card in the computer must support dual output. The X60/120 should beplaced below the monitor and as close to it as possible, both vertically and horizontally. Avoid having toadjust the tilt angle o the eye tracker by using an adjustable chair or the participant.

Remember to measure and add all the required parameters in the X120 Confguration Tool. Alwaysmeasure the parameters relative to the visible active area o the monitor, where you can see the actualimage. Read more about the tool in the previous chapters.

    Projection screen setup

In a projection screen setup always make sure the eye tracker is able to track the eyes over the entirescreen by using the correct screen size, correct distance to the screen, and the correct tilt angle o theeye tracker, ollow the general setup guidelines on page 8. Congure Windows to use the projected

screen as the primary screen. An additional optional secondary monitor can be used or monitoring theeye movements during the recording by using the Live Viewer unction in Tobii Studio. For this option thegraphics card in the computer must support dual output. The X60/120 eye tracker should be placedas high up as possible without covering the bottom o the screen rom the person watching the screen.Avoid having to adjust the tilt angle o the eye tracker by using a height adjustable foor stand or theeye tracker (accessory available rom Tobii).

Remember to measure and add all the required parameters in the X120 Confguration Tool. Alwaysmeasure the parameters relative to the visible active area o the projected screen, where you can seethe actual image. Read more about the tool in the previous chapters.

    TV setup

In a TV setup always make sure the eye tracker is able to track the eyes over the entire screen byusing the correct distance to the screen, and the correct tilt angle o the eye tracker, ollow the generalsetup guidelines on page 8. The X60/120 eye tracker should be placed as high up as possible withoutcovering the bottom o the TV screen rom the person watching the screen. Avoid having to adjustthe tilt angle o the eye tracker by using a height adjustable foor stand or the eye tracker (accessoryavailable rom Tobii).

A setup including a TV can be realized in two dierent ways:

Computer will display stimulus on the TV screen

You will use the computer or displaying the stimulus on the TV screen, or example by using Moviestimulus in Tobii Studio. In this setup the computer must support a video out option so that the TV

screen can be used as an additional screen connected to the computer. Congure Windows to use theTV screen as the primary screen. An additional optional secondary monitor can be used or monitoringthe eye movements during the recording by using the Live Viewer unction in Tobii Studio.

External device will display stimulus on the TV screen

The stimulus presented on the TV screen is generated by an external device such as a DVD player, set top box, gaming console etc. In this setup the computer must support a video out option so thatthe TV screen can be used as an additional screen connected to the computer during the calibrationprocedure. Additionally the computer must have a Video Capture Card or recording the video signalcoming in rom the external device. For this setup you should use the External Video stimulus inTobii Studio. An additional secondary monitor should be included or monitoring Tobii Studio during therecording. Congure Windows to use the TV screen as the primary screen. The TV must be able to takein two dierent video signals, one rom the computer (or calibration) and one rom the external deviceused. You should be able to switch between the two video signal (computer video or calibration andexternal device when recording), usually this is done by using the TV remote control.

Remember to measure and add all the required parameters in the X120 Confguration Tool. Alwaysmeasure the parameters relative to the visible active area o the TV screen, where you can see theactual image. Read more about the tool in the previous chapters.

    Appendix II:Troubleshooting Guide

The Tobii X60 and X120 Eye Trackers use a network connection to communicate with the computer. This guide helps you to troubleshoot the most common connection issues with your Tobii Eye Tracker.

Note: This guide assumes that the tracker in question has rmware 1.1.14 or higher installed, and thatTobii Studio 1.2.38 or Tobii Eye Tracking Tools 2.2.4 is installed on the computer.

Problems with the Apple Bonjour Service

The Apple Bonjour service is used by the Tobii Eyetracker Browser and Tobii Studio to identiy the eyetrackers that are connected to the same network as the computer. The service is installed automaticallywith Tobii Studio and the Tobii Eye Tracking Tools.

The Apple Bonjour Service is not installed on the computer.

Check i the service is installed on the computer:

Open the Windows Control Panel (Classic View) > Administrative Tools > Services.

I the Apple Bonjour Service is not listed, then it will have to be installed on the computer. First check thateither Tobii Studio or the Tobii Eye Tracking Tools are installed on the computer, open the All Programsolder in your Windows Start menu:

    1. I a older named Tobii containing the Tobii Eyetracker Browser is present in the All Programsolder, then at least one o the two is installed. I that is the case, download and install the latest versiono the Apple Bonjour Service rom: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourorwindows.html

    2. I the Tobii older is missing rom the All Programs older, then re-install Tobii Studio or the TobiiEyetracker Browser on the computer.

The Apple Bonjour Service is installed but not started.

Open the Windows Control Panel (Classic View) > Administrative Tools > Services.

Check in the Services list i the Apple Bonjour Services Status is set to Started. I the Status is

empty then right click on it and select Start. Restart any Tobii applications and connect again.

The Apple Bonjour Service cannot be started.

Most likely the service is blocked by an anti-virus sotware or Group Policy. Check any Group Policiesand anti-virus sotware installed (not only running) on the computer. I you do not know how to do this, please contact your IT administrator as the procedure diers between security applications.

The Apple Bonjour Service is up and running but there is still no connection.

Check that the port Apple Bonjour Service uses to scan the network is not blocked by any rewall. It uses UDP port 5353. I you need help in doing this, please contact your IT administrator as theprocedure or doing this diers between security applications.

I none o the above works.

I the computer is not connected to the Internet and Skype is running, Skype will food all networkconnections in attempts to connect to the Skype servers. This can cause problems with the eye trackerconnection. Turn o Skype.

The eye tracker takes a long time to start tracking.

I the eye tracker shows a delay o 10-30 seconds when showing the track status, starting a calibrationor starting a recording, try to upgrade the Apple Bonjour Service to its most recent version (see point 1).Using an outdated version o the Apple Bonjour Services may cause slow connection problems.

Problems with the peer-to-peer network confguration

When the eye tracker is connected directly to the test computer it uses a network connection with aDHCP server.

Check i the network card is set to obtain an IP address automatically (see page 8 o this manual).
