What is in Tobacco?

• Tobacco contains – Nicotine (causes addiction)– Tar

• Tobacco smoke contains– Carbon monoxide– Nitrogen oxide

How is Tobacco Used/Abused?

• Used in-– Smoking

• Cigarettes• Cigars• Pipes

❖Can also be chewed or sniffed❖Abused when people smoke so much that they get addicted

due to the nicotine.

Effects of Tobacco

• Nicotine, the main chemical produced by exploiting tobacco, is a stimulant

• Nicotine acts on the brain by stimulating different receptors including Dopamine, the “feel good” brain chemical

• Also stimulates the Adrena Medulla, creating adrenaline

• Makes people feel alert

• The FDA has only recently began regulating tobacco (2009)

• Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act• It is illegal to advertise tobacco products on

television• Surgeon General’s warning found on every pack of

cigarettes in the U.S.

How Tobacco is Grown/Manufactured

1. The tobacco plant is harvested.2. Then it’s dried and broken up into pieces by a

machine.3. Then artificial flavoring and chemicals are

added before the tobacco is turned into products such as cigarettes, cigars, or snuff.
