states• Leaves of a tobacco plant are dried and aged
for 2 to 3 years• Then used to make cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco

humans) and many are poisonous
• Nicotine: an additive substance; stimulant drug found in tobacco.– Stimulates the nervous system– Dulls the taste buds– Constricts the blood vessels– Increases heart rate and blood pressure– As addictive as heroin, cocaine and alcohol

Why do People use Tobacco?
• There are 50 million users in the United States today
1. Stress• Cope with stress or uncomfortable feelings such as
depression, anger, boredom, and anxiety
2. social pressure• View smoking as a sign of adulthood• Make them look sophisticated• Peer pressure
3. Advertising
Why People DO NOT Use Tobacco
• Harmful to their health• Socially unacceptable• People date non-smokers• expensive
Types of Smokers
• The Pleasure Smoker– Social smoker, not yet addicted to nicotine
• The Negative Effect Smoker– Smokes to relieve stress (psychologically dependent)
• The Habitual Smoker– Addicted (physically dependent) to nicotine. Desires cigarettes
• The Heavy Smoker– Chain smoker, they constantly need and have a flow of nicotine
• Physically and psychologically dependent• Will go through withdrawals without nicotine
