WHY IT ALL BEGANNew York City began as a trading post in the early 1600s for

the purpose of trading tools, jewels and metal goods for beaver skins (pelts). The Europeans favored beaver fur

because it was waterproof and easy to work with for hats, which everyone wore in those days. For many years beavers

from Scandinavia and Russia were used but there were almost no beavers left in those regions by about 1600.

NEW YORK CITYBefore the arrival of European explorers, the area of New York City was known as “Lenapehoking” and was home to an Algonquin tribe known as the “Lenape”. In the year 1524, Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian explorer working for France entered the harbour of modern day New York and named it “New Angouleme”. In 1609, English explore Henry Hudson came to the region, looking for the “Northwest Passage” (a way to get across from England to China, Japan, and India). There were others who explored the area but the first permanent European village was built in 1624 on Governor’s Island( just south of Manhattan) by fur traders from Holland. The village grew and became known as “New Amsterdam”. By 1674 the British had taken over, first calling the town “New Orange” and then “New York”

Partitions And Community Areas

General Division of Chicago

The city of Chicago is partitioned into four main sections: Downtown (containing the Loop), the North Side the South Side, and the West Side. As the city expanded, more sections were added to the four divisions.

This puzzle has all these parts jumbled in every direction. Can you draw a line from the loose part to where it belongs?

Chicago is the most populous city in the Midwestern United States. Its metropolitan area, sometimes called “Chicagoland”, is home to almost ten million people and is the third-largest city in the United States Behind New York and Los Angeles. As the city grew it naturally expanded outward from the water (Lake Michigan). The city is organized into four major partitions which contain Community Areas, which in turn contain Neighborhoods.

Chicago is well known for its outdoor art. BATCOLUMN is a one hundred and one-foot-tall outdoor sculpture in downtown Chicago. Designed by Claes Oldenburg, it takes the shape of a baseball bat standing on its knob. It is made of open latticework steel. The sculpture was dedicated in 1977.
