Modern Greek HomesMost Greeks live in cities or coastal areas. In the cities there are apartments and modern homes. Almost every Greek apartment has a balcony. Many Greek homes are located very close to each other with little or no yard. Many homes are white with colourfully painted doors and windows.

These homes are made of stone, brick, and clay.

Ancient Greek HomesAncient Greek homes were built around an open courtyard and some modern homes still follow this style. The walls of the homes were often made from wood and mud bricks. They had small windows with no glass, but wooden shutters to keep out the hot sun. They didn't have much furniture inside.

People sat on wooden chairs or stools.

Modern Greek Land

Greece boasts thousands of islands - but only about 200 of them are inhabited or visited by tourists. Crete is the largest of the islands. Santorini is the most-visited Greek

island. Coming in second is Crete, followed by Corfu, Rhodes and Mykonos.

Ancient Greek LandAncient Greece wasn't a single country or empire united under a single government, it

was made up of a number of city-states. At the centre of each city-state was a powerful city.

The two most powerful and famous city-states in Ancient Greece were Athens and Sparta, but there were other important and influential city-states too.

Greek Landscape

The land of Greece is full of mountains. Around 80% of the Greek mainland is mountainous.

In Ancient Greek types, this made it difficult to make long journeys by land. The mountains also formed natural barriers between the major city-states.

The highest peak in the Greek mountains is known as Mount Olympus. In Greek mythology, Mt. Olympus was said to be the home of the gods.
