UNDERSTANDING OUR ROOTS
In order to fully grasp the impact of the Holocaust on the Jewish world, we must first understand Jewish life as it was prior to the war.
Travel to Lublin, and study like a scholar at the Yeshivat Chachmei, the most important Yeshiva in Poland before the war, if not the world. The prominent Torah study centre hosted some of the most brilliant Jewish minds since it was established in 1930.
Three kilometeres from the center of Lublin is Majdanek. Take part in a somber visit to this concentration camp through which over 300,000 prisoners passed, and over 80,000 perished.
Depart for Leżajsk, where you will visit the grave of Elimelech, one of the founders of the Hasidic movement. The site attracts pilgrims from around the world, making this surviving cemetery one of the largest sites of Jewish pilgrimage in Poland, and which continues to remain an important Hasidic center.
Tour the historic Łańcut synagogue, built in 1761, which has been stunningly restored with wall decorations from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Our journey begins in Warsaw, which in 1939 was the literary, artistic, and intellectual centre of the Jewish world. Over 375,000 Jews lived in the city and thrived.
Learn about the richness and diversity of the Jewish people before the war at the Jewish Cemetery of Warsaw, one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in Europe.
During a walking tour through Warsaw, you will visit the former Warsaw Ghetto, the Umschlagplatz monument, Mila 18, and more.
Take part in a guided visit of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, Warsaw’s newest museum located on the site of the former Warsaw Ghetto.
Dinner and optional evening walking tour of Warsaw.
Krakow
PAST MEETS PRESENT
Depart for the town of Tarnów, whose pre-war Jewish population of about 25,000 people was almost entirely wiped out by the Nazis.
Visit the Buczyna Forest in Zbylitowska Gora, where approximately 10,000 people were executed by the Nazis and buried in mass graves in June 1942.
Drive to Krakow. Visit Kazimierz, Krakow’s historic Jewish quarter, which compromises the most intact and significant collection of Jewish buildings in Central Europe today. See synagogues and sites which speak to the spiritual and cultural life of Polish Jews from the 15th century until the Second World War.
Over the bridge from Kazimierz is the former Jewish ghetto of Krakow, where traces of the ghetto wall can still be found. Here you will learn about the bravery of those involved in the Jewish Resistance Movement, and visit the former factory of Oskar Schindler, who is credited with saving over 1,200 Jews during the Shoah.
NEVER FORGET
This emotionally challenging day will bring us to Auschwitz, the largest concentration camp established by the Nazi regime.
March in solidarity from Judenrampe to Birkenau, where we will learn the true atrocities of the Holocaust at this infamous death camp and the site where over 1.2 million Jews perished.
Take part in a memorial ceremony at the site.
Return to Krakow for an early dinner.
Depart on flight to Tel-Aviv.
