To CONNECT with God, each other & the worldas we experience PURPOSE, BELONGING &

LIFE-CHANGING discipleship.

Destiny’s Door

The sad news of Austin Durfee’s death has given me cause for reflection. I was oneof Austin’s coaches as he played baseball at Quincy HS from 2013-2017. He was acheerful, thoughtful, hardworking, and selfless young man. He did everything hiscoaches asked of him and he played baseball with great joy. My nickname for himwas the “A-Train.”

On Monday, I met with a few of Austin’s friends and former teammates; we ate pizzaand shared memories of the A-Train. His death prompted both fond recollections aswell as questions about life, death, heaven, and hell. One of the questions wentsomething like this: “How do we know if we will get into heaven when we die?”

brought to my mind a scripture from the Bible.

Hebrews 9:27 says, “…it is appointed for men to die once and after this comesjudgment.”

I found a helpful summation of this verse. It says, “Death is appointed, and you areno exception. You only die once, and death is not the end; it is your destiny’s door.”(https://www.simplybible.com/f162-whybe-five-facts-about-death.htm)

I told Austin’s friends that the only thing I know of that qualifies anyone to “enterheaven” is faith in Jesus Christ. It is faith in Jesus, and him alone, that allows anyoneto ‘come to the Heavenly Father.’ (John 14:6)

I am sad for Austin’s death. I am deeply comforted to know of his faith in JesusChrist. I want each of the young men I coach to know the Lord Jesus in this lifebefore they meet Him at “destiny’s door.” I am thankful for the honor to be a coach inthis little town in Central WA. I love baseball, but I love our players and coachesmore. I desire for each of them to know Jesus; because if they know Him, they willhave a hope that cannot be extinguished by death.

If we share the simple and non-essential things in this life, maybe we will earn theright to share our thoughts on the “real stuff” of life and the life to come. If you feel aprompting to tell someone how much you love them, seize the moment and do so.We live only once before we stand at destiny’s door, so let’s love God and others allthe more.

Your brother and friend, shaun (a.k.a. Coach MacNaw)
