Travel the Great Inland Way and discover the reality of the lyrics of Australian’s National Anthem - “natures gifts of beauty rich and rare”. This fully sealed route takes you from one natural treasure to another as it weaves its way from Sydney to the wide open spaces of the outback, and up through Queensland’s Central Highlands to Cairns, Cooktown and the pristine tropical playground of the Great Barrier Reef.
As you travel along it’s 2691km path and bear witness to grand masterpieces sculptured by millions of years of nature’s caressing weather and time, scenery that our pioneering men and women would have seen, you’ll soon appreciate why the Great Inland Way is considered the ‘Australian drive of all drives’.
Follow the Great Dividing Range where mountain ranges and sandstone monoliths are interspersed with rolling pastures, open plains and welcoming towns and communities. Underground, sparkling gemstones, purest gold and the Great Artesian Basin – the world’s largest and deepest aquifer – coupled with ancient art galleries and dreamtime legends, give you a never-ending feast of attractions.
Along the way, luxurious lodgings, secluded hideaways, first class B & B’s, camping, motels, hotels, caravan parks are all available to offer something for everyone’s accommodation needs.
SYdneY to QueenSland’S BorderAfter leaving Sydney, Australia’s premier harbour city, the Great Inland Way winds through Bathurst and past some of New South Wales’ award winning wineries in the Mudgee and Orange regions.
Near Orange, you’ll pass through Cabonne Country which offers a diverse range of wonderful attractions, some of the best food and wine in regional Australia, a rich history and heritage. Try panning for gold at the Ophir Reserve, site of Australia’s first gold strike or take an early morning, hot air balloon ride outside Canowindra, Australia’s Ballooning capital. Or enjoy the interactive display at the Age of Fishes Museum in Canowindra which houses the 360 million old fish fossils found nearby.
Plan a stopover at Dubbo, the city of smiles, where the simple rural pleasures brush up against the bustling energy of a dynamic inland city to forge an unforgettable holiday experience for people of all ages. Go wild in Taronga Western Plains Zoo, one of the world’s finest open range zoos, walk in the
footsteps of early pioneers at Old Dubbo Gaol, or just relax in the natural beauty of this great plains city. Long summers, fine food and wine, pristine parklands and a non-stop calendar of events and festivals make Dubbo a genuine family favourite.
Go on to discover the unique Castlereagh River, an upside down river where if you see water, the river is flooding! The Great Inland Way continues through Gilgandra, Gulargambone, Coonamble and Walgett to Lightning Ridge, home of Australia’s national gemstone, the opal. Beneath the ochre tinted clay, the black opal, the rarest of them all is unearthed.
Then it’s on to Hebel, just inside Queensland’s border where a visit to the pub where the Kelly Gang once stood quaffing beers is a must do. Murals depict humourous outback scenes with even a sheep welcoming you to the public ‘bah’! For the 4WD enthusiast, consider a detour to Culgoa Floodplain National Park then continue north 65kms to Dirranbandi, the home of Cubbie Station, the world’s largest privately owned irrigated cotton farm. If you are looking for somewhere to rest beside the river in Dirranbandi, head down to the Jack Dwyer Memorial Park. The park is a lovely spot to stretch your legs while taking in some of the great scenery. Visit the Rural Transaction Centre for more information on the best fishing and camping spots in the area.
St george to roMaBack on the road, head one hour north to St George, also known as the ‘Inland Queensland Fishing Capital’. Find a perfect spot along the Balonne Riverbank and try your luck at catching a Murray Cod or Yellowbelly. However, there is more than fishing in this picturesque rural town. Visit Steve Margaritis at the Unique Egg. Steve creatively carves emu eggs and his collection of over 100 eggs is extraordinary. Whilst in town, drop into Riversands Vineyards and sample some of their delightful wines, liqueurs, and port. Make sure you allow for some rest and relaxation time onboard a Sandytown River Cruise with Brett Schwiekert along the Balonne River. For those interested in taking
a step back in time, visit the St George Heritage Centre and take a look at their working historical printing press, blacksmith shop, original local gaol house and police station. Don’t forget to plan some time visiting the Nindigully Pub, which is reputed to hold one of the longest continual licenses in Queensland, and was the location where the movie ‘Paperback Hero’ was filmed, starring Hugh Jackman.
The Great Inland Way then follows the Balonne River 108km to Surat, another top spot for those who enjoy fishing. The Cobb & Co Changing Station with its 25,000 litre freshwater aquarium, replica 14-seater Cobb & Co Coach and art gallery is a must see. Then visit the Aboriginal Bush Garden, the Cobb & Co Corduroys and the pretty Beranga Creek 3.5km north where in late summer purple water lilies erupt in an impressive floral display. 60km east is Myall Park Botanic Garden, the oldest collection of Australian semi-arid plants in Queensland and the birthplace of the Grevillea Robyn Gordon.
roMaRoma is less than an hour’s drive from Surat and is the hub of the Maranoa region and the cradle of Australia’s oil and gas industry. Over 100 years ago, the accidental discovery of Australia’s first oil and gas reserves put Roma onto the world stage, so to learn all about it, a visit to the Big Rig Tourist Centre is a must do. Roma is also the home to Queensland’s oldest winery, so drop into Romavilla Winery and sample these award-winning wines. Roma also hosts Australia’s largest store cattle selling facility so make sure you include a visit to the Roma Saleyards. About 1000 bottle trees line the streets of Roma and Heroes Avenue is one worth exploring as it honours the men and women of Roma who lost their lives during World War I. Another famous historic site is the Roma Court House where the infamous cattle duffer Harry Readford was controversially acquitted. Take the chance to breathe in some country air, with a leisurely walk along the Adungadoo Pathway which meanders beside the Bungil Creek amongst the ancient red river gums or take a ride on the “Roma Express” miniature train through the parklands.
Injune and the SandStone BeltBack on the road, Injune, a town full of spirit, is 89km north of Roma and is situated in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range. Drop into the Visitor Information for a cuppa and a chat with the locals and get ready to explore the surprising treasures in the area. Make sure you call in at the ‘Struth’ hotel where friendly cowboys wearing black hats are always in for a yarn.
Surrounding Injune are some impressive national parks such as Lonesome with its candlestick sandstone monoliths, deserted 90 year old boundary riders hut and rare black striped wallabies. From the lookout the view stretches across the Arcadia Valley, one of the best beef producing areas in Queensland. Lake Nuga Nuga, the largest natural water body in the Central Queensland sandstone belt, is a bird watchers paradise. The lake also puts on a fantastic show bi-annually when purple water lilies carpet its surface.
Central hIghlandSThe spectacular Carnarvon Gorge should not be missed! Ancient Aboriginal art works, remnant rainforests and 21km of walking tracks meandering through the sandstone cliffs lead to extraordinary sites such as the Moss Garden, Amphitheatre and Ward’s Canyon. The 298,000 hectare Carnarvon wilderness area is segmented into parks each with incredible natural features.
Winding northwards, the Great Inland Way passes through Rolleston to arrive in Springsure. A striking sight which is lit up at night, is Virgin Rock which looks over the town from within the Minerva Hills National Park. Take one of the self-drive tours and visit the historical Old Rainworth Fort, the Wills Massacre site and Fred’s Gorge. Access to the Ka Ka Mundi and Salvator Rosa sections of Carnarvon National Park are from Springsure.
Emerald, the vibrant heart of Queensland’s Central Highlands, is 66km from Springsure. The Emerald Botanic Gardens, heritage listed Railway Station,
250 year old fossilized tree and mosaic pathway are just some of the attractions to explore in Emerald.
Extremely popular for those into fishing are Lake Maraboon and Fairbairn Dam. Here the famous Redclaw – freshwater crayfish – are caught by the dozens. Unfortunately, you won’t find a single emerald gem stone around Emerald, but you may just find a sapphire as 44km west of Emerald is one of the world’s largest sapphire fields. Admire sapphires in a myriad of sparkling colours in the local galleries and gem shops.
After crossing the Tropic of Capricorn is the friendly town of Capella, 54km north of Emerald, and encircled by a patchwork of multi-coloured crops forever changing across the black fertile plains. Drop in and see Australia’s largest wood-roofed station homestead – Peak Downs Homestead at the Pioneer Village and take a relaxing self-drive tour through the Peak range.
Next on the route is Clermont, where gold fossickers armed with a detector and licence, are often compensated with valuable finds. Picnic at Hoods Lagoon and don’t miss a tour of Blair Athol Mine to witness mining at a seam of steaming coal. A few kilometres south, Theresa Creek Dam is a top spot to camp and fish. At nearby Copperfield, see all that remains of Queensland’s first copper mine.
CharterS towerSContinuing north, the Great Inland Way calls into Belyando Crossing before arriving in Charters Towers, once Queensland’s second largest city after the discover of gold. Immaculately restored buildings and attractive parks grace the streets of this charming city and the best place to start is at the Visitor Information and Orientation Centre. Allow the ‘Ghosts of Gold’ to escort you around this exciting ‘living museum’ taking in the Venus Gold Battery which offers an insight into life during the gold rush of the late 19th century; the Stock Exchange Arcade; Towers Hill where gold was first discovered in 1871; the Post Office and the
huge cattle sales at the Dalrymple Saleyards.
Take a short drive to visit Dalrymple National Park and the heritage-listed town of Ravenswood. Then when you finally release yourself from Charters Towers, continue to Undara Volcanic National Park where you can take a guided walking tour around the rim of Kalkani crater and explore the world’s largest lava tube system.
the taBlelandS – CaIrnS & CooktownGreen undulating pastures, rainforests, cascading waterfalls, lookouts, lively markets, quaint art and craft galleries are just some of the treasures to be uncovered as the Great Inland Way meanders through the Atherton Tablelands on its final leg to Cairns and Cooktown. Tropical North Queensland bestows picture perfect scenery every day and is where world heritage-listed rainforests meet the world heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. Don’t forget your camera!
To the east, explore Cairns the tropical capital of Queensland, and seaside villages from the glamorous to the secluded. A day on the reef is essential so you don’t miss out on viewing this magical marine playground.
Surrounded by paradise, Cooktown is a relaxed seaside town where you can escape the humdrum of life and find secluded beaches, Aboriginal rock art sites, remote fishing locations, lush Botanic Gardens and exquisite views. The James Cook Historical Museum and Cooktown History Centre highlight the region’s unique historical significance and don’t miss the glorious sunsets from Grassy Hill lookout.
You have now arrived at the end of your Great Inland Way journey and no doubt have gathered visions, stories, history, natural landscapes, unique treasurers and met some great people along the way.
