MEMORABILIA NO. 1 April 2010

Let's start this issue off properly with a schnitzel sandwich and a snap cap courtesy of Austin Adams.

Who remembers the name of the Gasthaus across the street from the main gate at Gutleut Kaserne? It had the best schnitzel sandwiches in Frankfurt.

Need a deckel (coaster) for your beer? Austin got a mash note from a Swedish girl on the fourth one.

And then we had to ruin it all by going to the Gutleut Mess Hall for C-Ration powdered eggs that tasted like they were from WWll and then get on the bus and go off to work. I remember writing my family that we had eggs for the start of each shift until I could hardly look at another egg. And because of this, every time I sat on the commode I didn’t know whether I was going to s*** or cackle. Well, I thought it was humorous at the time! We each paid $2.00 every month to have the Italian nationals pull KP at Gutleut for us. That all changed when we moved to Kennedy Kaserne and had to pull our own KP at the Consolidated Mess Hall up from the IG Farben building. I remember this well because I did the KP duty roster there. I guess the KP there was worth it because the food was so much better.

Who remembers the Gutleut stockade prisoners with the big “P” on the back of their fatigue shirts being marched through the mess hall line? And now to work,,,

Memory jogger — now you can see what Tricks were on duty on November 22nd when we got the word that President Kennedy was assassinated. Where were you?

And for R & R we went on leave to...

You can’t go on leave without American cigarettes (and sometimes pay for part of that leave by trading them).

And don’t forget your Driver’s License.

Most of us didn’t have cars, so it was either “hoof it” or take the strassenbahn (streetcar).
