2011–2012 ANNUAL REPORT

SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK OF NORTH CENTRAL OHIO

The County Cupboard & Resource Center was established as a temporary hunger-relief program serving Lorain County. County Cupboard distributed surplus commodities from the USDA along with food provided through an anti-trust lawsuit settlement.

As needs within the counties increased, County Cupboard began an aggressive campaign to gather and distribute more food and other resources. To better reflect its broader services, County Cupboard officially changed its name to Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio.

Following a successful capital campaign, Second Harvest purchased land and built a new facility at Deer Trail Lane in Lorain, adding much-needed warehouse and refrigerated storage space.

Second Harvest completed a warehouse reconfiguration project to free up additional dry storage space.

Second Harvest’s board of directors and staff completed a comprehensive strategic plan,

outlining goals to address hunger in the region.

County Cupboard was granted tax-exempt status under IRS section 501(c)(3) and added Huron and Erie counties to its regional service area.

County Cupboard became an affiliate of Feeding America, formerly America’s Second Harvest, and was successful in gaining funding through the United Way of Greater Lorain County.

Second Harvest distributions reached a record 7.5 million pounds of food and grocery products, up 31% from the year before. Through the agency network, over 2 million pounds of locally-grown produce was distributed at Farmer’s Markets.

By the late 80s County Cupboard had outgrown its Vermilion location and relocated to Amherst.

Crawford County became part of Second Harvest’s regional service area.

Second Harvest continues to

AdVOCATE for increased federal funding, as well as state funding for the Ohio Food Program and Ohio Agriculture Clearance Program.

although the economy is slowly improving, hunger remains a critical

issue for families, and especially seniors and children. for the past

30 years, Second Harvest has been the leader in alleviating hunger in

our community by distributing 80 million pounds of food and grocery

products, equaling 67 million meals for families struggling with hunger.

our capacity to provide food and resources through our hunger-relief

network has had a direct and lasting impact across our region.

our ability to support and strengthen those devoted to addressing

the issue of hunger has never been greater and yet, it is not enough.

looking to the future, we will utilize all of our resources in undertaking

strategic initiatives aimed at expanding our capacity to bridge the gap

and bring hope to the families we serve.

our goal remains unchanged: more Food. less Hunger.
