VENICE BIENNALE

The Terra Nova Art Foundation (TNAF) promotes contemporary artists from Newfoundland & Labrador within an international context. This is achieved through exhibitions at major international art events, as well as educational and administrative support for the province’s artists, and an engagement with international critical discourse.

Our primary goal is to gain unparalleled national and international attention for our provincial arts community from prominent art professionals by participating as a collateral project in The Venice Biennale, one of the world’s most prestigious and influential art events.

In 2010, we formed as an ad hoc committee to achieve our goals. The Venice Biennale was chosen because of its reputation as the most widely recognized cultural event in contemporary art. In 2012, TNAF’s volunteer board formally incorporated as a not-for-profit art foundation to fulfill this aim. ‘About Turn’ in 2013 was the Foundation’s first major success. It was the first time in Canadian history an independent project received official inclusion representing Canadians outside the national pavilion.

“... ‘About Turn’ provides a bright light for the province. In it, one sees a characteristically Newfoundland can-do spirit: making do with fewer resources and approaching projects with a communal and enthusiastic drive despite difficult circumstances.” — Leah Sandals, canadianart.ca

‘About Turn’ in 2013 presented new bodies of work by Will Gill (St. John’s, NL) and Peter Wilkins (Clarke’s Beach, NL). The exhibition was co-curated by Mireille Eagan and Bruce Johnson, and was on display at the Galleria Ca’Rezzonico from June - November, 2013. This project was received with glowing praise nationally and internationally and was featured in numerous newspapers, magazines, radio and television shows globally.

NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADORIN VENICE, 2015

IN Terra Nova Art Foundation have once again officially been invited to exhibit at the world’s most prestigious contemporary art event, the 56th Venice Biennale. The exhibition, titled ‘Under the Surface’, will present recent work by Jordan Bennett (Stephenville Crossing, NL) and St John’s resident Anne Troake (Twillingate, NL). It will be on display from May 9 to November 22, 2015.

Taking their place alongside the official pavilions, Bennett and Troake will represent the province’s unique, confident and contemporary culture. The exhibition will be housed within Galleria Ca’ Rezzonico, a Gothic palazzo on Venice’s historic Grand Canal. Under the Surface is curated by Chris Clarke (born in St. John’s, NL; currently Senior Curator at Lewis Glucksman Gallery, University College Cork, Ireland).

This year’s artists were selected by Clarke from submitted proposals, in consultation with the Selections Advisory Committee: Sarah Fillmore (Chief Curator, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia); Mary MacDonald (Director, Eastern Edge Gallery); and Jonathan Shaughnessy (Associate Curator of Contemporary Art, National Gallery of Canada) aided by Mireille Eagan (The Rooms).

“UNDER THE SURFACE”

Under the Surface will present two distinct, but complementary, bodies of work:

Jordan Bennett’s Ice Fishing encompasses the installation of a fishing shack and multiple video/audio projections. The audio tracks are recordings between the artist and his father concerning the historical significance of ice fishing. Ice Fishing was co created by Bennett and the NFB Digital Studio and produced by the National Film Board of Canada as part of the ImagiNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival Digital Media Partnership.

Anne Troake’s OutSideIn is an immersive 3D video installation that shifts from the familiar to the wild, the natural to the supernatural. Filmed at the artist’s farm in Logy Bay, NL, two unclothed bodies (renowned dancers Carole Prieur and Bill Coleman) perform a choreography based upon cellular sourced movements.

“Jordan Bennett and Anne Troake exemplify the centrality of the land to the inhabitants of Newfoundland and Labrador,” states Chris Clarke. “This notion of a specific geographical terrain as an integral part of the region’s traditions, culture and economy is explored in their respective practices, as a site of performance and interaction as well as an expression of one’s community and heritage. In this way, the exhibition posits the landscape as a space that continually informs and influences our relationship to the province, what it means to live in such an environment and how it determines our sense of individual and collective identity.”

ABOUT THE VENICE BIENNALE

The Venice Biennale has for over a century been one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world. The Biennale art exhibition is widely regarded as a barometer for the most current and interesting art in the world. On average Venice, the city famously built on water, has over 15 million visiting tourists each year. In 2013, the art exhibition alone welcomed record attendance numbers in excess of 440,000 visitors.

The Biennale dates back to 1895, when the first International Art Exhibition was held. In the 1930s new festivals were born as adjuncts in music, cinema and theatre. For example, the 1932 Venice Film Festival was the first festival of film ever organized. In 1980, the first International Architecture Exhibition took place, and in 1999, the Festival of Dance made its debut at the Venice Biennale.

The Venice Biennale is synonymous with the International Art Exhibition. The exhibition is divided into three parts:

a) The International Exhibition curated by the artistic director.

b) National Participations, countries curate their own shows. (The National Gallery of Canada organizes this and has selected BGL for 2015)

c) Collateral Events, selected and acknowledged by the Biennale and organized by the promoting institutions. The TNAF exhibition will be a ‘collateral event’.

SPONSORSHIP PACKAGE

“The Biennale, art’s most historic and most prestigious exhibition, offers visual artists career-making exposure on the world stage. It’s where the international art community assembles to decide what’s hot in contemporary art…”

Kate Taylor, Globe & Mail, June 22, 2012.

The Terra Nova Art Foundation will present the art of Newfoundland and Labrador to international audiences at the Venice Biennale, for the second successive time. The project works in both directions – as a showcase for Newfoundland and Labrador artists on the world stage and also as an artistic introduction to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador for visitors and residents of Venice and the world. There are numerous ways to help, the next page has some examples.
