History

MTD produces its first ro-tary lawn mower. This sets the course for specializati-on in the sector “motorized garden equipment”.

MTD produces its first radi-ator grill for the automobile industry.

MTD establishes branches in France, Austria, Hungary, Sweden and Denmark. The European central office finds its home in Saarbrücken-Bübingen with the take-over of the well established company GUTBROD, a producer of mo-torized garden equipment.

The central ware- house in Valmont, France is established.

MTD starts the production of bicycles and toys.

The Modern Tool and Die Company – in short MTD – is born in the USA. The company is founded by the German immigrants and engineers Theo Moll, Emil Jochum and Erwin Gerhard.

In its 75th year, MTD once again, expands its pro-duction location in Saarbrücken.

MTD opens a factory in Hungary for the production of lawn mowers and signi-ficantly increases produc-tion capacity in Europe. In the same year, MTD begins production of 2 and 4-stro-ke engines, brushcutters and trimmers by taking over Ryobi North America.

Further branches in Belgium and Switzerland are established.

As a new branch, MTD Poland expands the distribution network in Eastern Europe.

Branches in Russia and Bulgaria are established. MTD takes over WOLF-Garten and fully integra-tes WOLF-Garten into the MTD-organization.

MTD Italy becomes 100 % subsidiary of MTD AG.

Mulching mowerThe SMART mulching mower got two bigger brothers now. A 53 cm push and a 53 cm self propel model based on an all new chassis are perfect for wider areas. Supreme mulching function thanks to the deep dome deck, as already proofed for many years with the existing 46 cm model.

Minirider 60 SD/SDEOur sit-on rider family got some new blood. Now available a 60 cm side discharge model either with pull start for the purist or with electric start for those who prefer comfort. All the great features from the existing rear discharge brother can also be found here.

Easy handling, reliable and robust – this is the MTD SMART range. All lawn mowers are fitted with the quiet MTD ThorX OHV engine, guaranteeing effortless and reliable work. Two levers operate a height adjuster with six cutting po-sitions, which are easy to change and allow you to adjust the cutting height to all conditions. MTD SMART lawn mo-wers are available as push mowers with working widths of

42 cm and 46 cm and as self propel with rear wheel drive with working widths of 42 cm up to 53 cm.When mowing you can decide whether to collect the grass clippings or to leave them on the lawn. The mowers are fitted with a grass catcher with a 60 or 70 litre capacity and a large opening for easy emptying.

Do you have larger areas to mow, on uneven land or a slo-ping lawn? Then let the MTD OPTIMA range of petrol lawn mowers come to your assistance. They are equipped with a central cutting height adjustment and high performance engines to make work more comfortable. You can choo-se between push mowers and self propelled mowers and between lawn mowers with and without high rear wheels to work on all kind of fields. The handles on the lawn mowers are fully foldable, enabling easy storage in minimum space.

The grass clippings can either be collected or discharged. Some models include a mulch kit in the delivery. All other MTD OPTIMA lawn mowers can be equipped with a mulch kit as accessory. Mulching is a clever kind of lawn maintenance that also sa-ves time because there is no grass catcher to empty. The grass is repeatedly cut until it becomes very small. Then it is deposited back into the lawn as a provider of moisture and natural fertiliser. Reusing your clippings protects your lawn from drying-out excessive sunlight. So it maintains its healthy green colour. MTD offers you the ideal mulching mower. With a specially shaped mulching deck, it offers excellent results. Available as 46 cm and 53 cm push, and 53 cm self propel.

MULCHING

Characteristic for a mulching mower are the domed shape of the cutting deck and the specially shaped mulching blade. Thanks to its profile it creates an air vortex inside the cutting deck that keeps the clippings suspended and swirling around long enough for them to be cut into fine pieces. This way you can literally make your clippings disappear.

Mulching saves timeThere is no collecting and disposal of the clippings.

Mulching saves moneyReduces your fertiliser and irrigation costs. Clippings are a

valuable natural fertiliser for your lawn.

Mulching protects your lawnReusing your clippings protects your lawn against excessive

sunlight. So it maintains its healthy green colour.

To maximise the benefits of mulching, you should never

cut more than one third of the height of the grass with each

mowing (max. 3 cm) and you should mow regularly; once or

twice a week in the main growth period.

Preferably the lawn should be dry when mulching (do not

mow early in the morning or straight after a rain shower!)

Mulching, bagging, discharge

1 BaggingTo achieve a professional, perfect cut, the grass clippings can be bagged and composted separately. On all models with rear discharge, the grass catcher can be emptied comfortably from the driver’s seat.

2 Discharge The clippings can be discharged with the aid of a deflector. This is particularly recommendable when the grass can be left on the ground.

3 MulchingMulching has the advantage that the soil is fertilised with the grass clippings. In this way the clippings with their nutrients can ideally be used as natural fertiliser. Mulching is recommendable in the dry summer months to prevent the lawn from drying out. Almost all models can be equipped with an additional mulching kit.

TransmissionsHydrostatic transmissions The hydrostatic transmission allows for smoothly and precise manoeuv-

ring. On our tractors with rear discharge, you can control velocity as well

as the infinitely variable forward and reverse speed by the tilt foot pedal.

Thus, you can leave both hands at the steering wheel, there is no need

to operate a clutch or to shift gear. On our tractors with side discharge,

the drive can be handled very comfortably by manual lever and a clutch/

brake pedal on the left hand side.

Transmatic transmissions Shift-on-the-go.

The Transmatic transmission allows for continuously variable shifting.

Choose your basic speed by moving the speed shift lever and start mo-

wing. By smoothly pressing on the brake pedal, you can slow down your

speed and speed up again without having to change gears, simply by

releasing the brake pedal. Then the tractor automatically resumes your

preset speed.

With a few simple steps you can adapt the use of your tractor to the season and the operating condition. To allow you to choo-se according to your needs, many of our tractors have two or all three functions or can be converted with appropriate attach-ments. You can recognise these machines by our 2-in-1, 3-in-1 or 3-in-1 OPTION logo.

Our MINIRIDERS are really versatile: They can discharge or mulch the clippings. They are ideal for fragmented gar-dens. They are attractive in design and easy to operate. You can effortlessly mow your lawn sitting down – even gardens with plenty of corners are no problem.

The OPTIMA rear discharge models with 92 cm or 105 cm cutting width put their focus on a perfect finish with their integrated direct collect system. The large grass catcher with 240 liters bagging capacity can be conveniently discharged from the driver’s seat. Also these tractors can get equipped with an optional mulching kit or a deflector to

spread the grass clippings back on the lawn. Besides that you get the same high level of comfort, power and versati-lity as on the side discharge versions.

OPTIMA LAWN TRACTORSWITH REAR DISCHARGE

All OPTIMA lawn tractors are equipped with maintenance free and pre-charged batteries. The grass catcher on the rear discharge models is already pre-assembled. So all you have to do after the lawn tractor is unpacked is to bolt on the steering wheel and fix the seat in your prefer-red position with the included tool. Then simply hook in the grass catcher, connect the two battery cables and fill up gas. Another “Pro-customer” industry leading stan-dard from MTD.

Our rear tine tillers can break up hard soil easily with their counter-rotating tines. The drive wheels are pulling the unit forward, while the tine shaft is indefatigably digging over the ground. This working principle in combination with the rear shield with rake will produce a nice smooth and even surface of fine crumbled garden mould.
