Reaching New Heights

2009-2010TLD HIGHLIGHTS

PFA-50: SIMPLEXITY or simple solutions to meet complex loading requirementsTLD has long had a market presence in the fi eld of “K-Loaders” with the TLD PFA-25 Loader Transporter, a proven solution for “Tactical Lifters” and low deck Cargo A/C.

In 2009, TLD decided to launch a new project for a loader with similar capacity as the PFA-25, but capable to reach the main deck of most commercial freighters. Some of these aircraft happen to be the base of the next generation tankers used by world air forces: A330-MRTT, A310-MRTT, KC-767… The result of this project is the newly designed PFA-50, a self loadable, off–road, versatile loading platform which answers the need for a high capacity loader in humanitarian and military applications.

The PFA-50 has been designed by a team combining engineers from the TLD sites of TLD St Lin in France and TLD Sherbrooke in Canada. This team produced a few very innovative

concepts (some of which patented): A strong but light platform sitting on the scissor and the scissor itself resting directly on the axle at the rear of the machine with an articulated bogey/engine cradle at the front. This arrangement eliminates the need for a chassis and associated weight, and provides an unparalleled ground clearance (required for auto loading in A/C cargo hold).

The PFA-50 also features various platform movements: tilt, roll, side shift and yaw for fi ne adjustment when docking to the Aircraft. The control system is built with a simple conventional relay system for easy maintenance in the toughest conditions.

The prototype was assembled in Sherbrooke, and met or exceeded all predictions during the thorough testing campaign carried out since June 2010. Thanks to its original design, the PFA-50 offers exceptional performances in manœuvrability, platform movements, ground clearance and easy self loading capability.

With its 5800mm (228») reach and its 16 ton dead weight, the PFA-50 offers the highest payload capacity and main deck capability for this type of loader and is therefore ready for new generation

aircraft like C-17, A-400M but also KC-767. It is the only main deck capable loader that meets strategic lift requirement of high capacity while being easily transported in theatre lift aircraft (C130J in particular).

The PFA-50 is a modern self loadable off–road military loader which brings handling capability to airports not always equipped with main deck capable commercial loaders, and, together with the PFA-25, perfectly fi ts the tactical and strategic airlift requirements of modern military forces.

Strong Market Momentum Continues for TLD’s JET-16Only 3 years after product launch and despite a global downturn, the TLD JET-16 is quickly becoming the new standard in zero-emissions baggage / cargo tractor solutions.

Operators on all continents are now enjoying the benefi ts of the JET-16’s superior features. With its dedicated production line at the Saint Lin site, TLD is now delivering tractors at a pace over 300 units per year. This success is rewarding for all the employees involved in this program, from sales teams to engineering and manufacturing teams.

The vehicle offers remarkable manoeuvrability and dynamic responsiveness with a focus on cab comfort and safety. Key features include a heavy-duty single-piece chassis, an A/C brushless 22kw motor, a high performance inverter, strong axles equipped with leaf springs, shocks absorbers and discs brakes. The cabin’s ergonomic design is available with several door confi gurations and a variety of tow hitch systems to, simplify operations and reduce potential operators’ injury

risks. For customers requiring either more power or more autonomy, TLD now proposes two driving modes: “dynamic” or “eco”. In limiting the maximum speed at 25km/hour, the “eco” mode signifi cantly improves the tractor autonomy for heavy users. Additional features continue to be added (for instance, larger battery confi guration for the American market) as TLD remains sensitive to customers’ requirements.

Pioneers in baggage tractor manufacturing since the 1950’s with its famous TRACMA tractors (more than 10 000 units sold worldwide), TLD also offers the JST baggage tractor line, with a choice of 5 different diesel, gasoline and LPG engines. As with all TLD product lines the JET and JST lines are supported in the fi eld by the TLD worldwide after sales and parts service organization.

A strong lineage, excellent design, quality components, a long list of standard features and an attractive Total Cost of Ownership make the JET series of tractors a winning combination for operators worldwide. If you have not tried it yet, ask for a demo!

ACU-900 Series: High Effi ciency Air Conditioners The ACU-902 and ACU-904 electric air conditioners have been developed to offer the highest effi ciency heating and cooling available today in the GSE Market.

These Air Conditioners use an Advanced Control System developed by TLD to monitor and adjust the speed of each component, continuously ensuring the minimum energy consumption. The Advanced Control System is connected to a high effi ciency refrigeration system with large, free fl owing coils that have exceptional heat transfer characteristics and an infi nitely variable screw-type compressor. Both models utilize a full reverse cycle, making them effective and effi cient heaters as well as air conditioners.

The ACU-900 series electric air conditioners take full advantage of TLD Windsor’s 50+ years of refrigeration experience. The evaporator utilizes a close approach coil design to provide the coldest air possible to the aircraft, with neither the risks associated with sub-freezing air nor the problems associated with defrost cycles. The condenser coils are oversized to allow a signifi cant reduction in the air velocity through the coil, which signifi cantly reduces the noise generated by the air conditioner. The ACU-902 has been tested at less than 80 dbA at a distance of 3 meters while confi gured for cooling a B-747.

The noise reduction techniques on the ACU-900 Series electric air conditioners go far beyond the oversized condenser coil. Every rotating device is controlled by a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) under the full control of the Advanced Control System. Signifi cant sound reductions are achieved by continuously regulating the speed of every component – in addition to the benefi cial effect on energy consumption.

Another major source of noise on traditional GSE air conditioners is the blower, but the ACU-900 series electric air conditioner has design features that virtually eliminate the noise radiated from this source. The blower inlet path has three 90° turns to force the sound into special sound absorption lining, acting as a broad band noise fi lter operating in the frequency range generated by the blower. This inlet duct offers a simple, effective and solid technical solution of the diffi cult problem of noise control.

The ACU-900 series electric air conditioners rely on proven TLD compressor technology – a screw type compressor with infi nitely variable load control and vapor injection. TLD is the industry leader in the development of Vapor injection, which provides signifi cantly increased refrigerant fl ow at minimal additional power consumption, essentially “boosting” compressor performance like a supercharger does for an engine. The screw type compressor allows

variable speed operation with the effi ciency benefi t of vapor injection over a wide operating range. In periods of extremely low refrigeration system load (low cooling load or low heating load) the compressors infi nitely variable load control device is used to completely match the compressor load to the cooling load and make the most effective use of power possible. No other compressor technology provides this level of control and effi ciency, and this is standard in all of TLD’s direct drive air conditioners today.

The brain of the ACU-900 series electric air conditioners is the Advanced Control System. The Advanced Control System can use a feedback probe to monitor the aircraft air temperature, and adjust the amount of cooling (or heating) provided to the aircraft. Through a simple, intuitive display, the operator selects the aircraft type, and the desired operating mode and the Advanced Control System ensures the most effi cient operation possible for those operating conditions. When aircraft cabin temperature feedback is not possible, the Advanced Control System determines the amount and temperature of the delivered air based on the selected aircraft and the ambient temperature.

The ACU-900 series electric air conditioners are the result of over 50 years of proven refrigeration design experience combined with innovative design focused on energy savings. Large, effi cient and reliable components controlled by the smart, Advanced Control System ensure a high cooling and heating performance, a minimal energy consumption and noise generation at all operating points.

The ABT-2045 and ABS-2045: new passenger stairs in the TLD range

The ABT-2045 is a towable passenger stair featuring a telescopic fl ight with a height range of 2030mm to 4650mm. It is suitable to interface with most single aisle and some wide body aircraft: Fokker, MD-80/DC9, B737, A318/319/320/321, B757, and B767...

The ABT-2045 comes with a 6.8 kW Yanmar diesel engine (other models available upon request) to power the equipment’s hydraulic system, ie: fl ight extension, fl ight tilt, stabilizers, and optional «walk behind» drive system. A hand pump is provided for backup. The standard version also includes a 12V LED lighting system with timer, non marking rubber bumpers on lead edges, aluminium steps with anti skid pattern, fi fth wheel steering system with tow bar, fail-safe height locking mechanism, 4 hydraulically operated stabilizers and aluminium sandwich side panels.

The equipment is designed to ensure passenger safety and security. The tow bar operates the parking brake on the front wheels, and allows good manoeuvrability to approach the aircraft. The “see through” step riser provides excellent visibility in reverse. A “CE compliance” package is available including an extra barrier on the top platform and at the stair entrance as well as fl ashers. The “walk behind” option features an extra hydraulic motor acting on one rear wheel, and controlled from the tow bar to facilitate the manoeuvre. It can be disconnected while towing the stairs.

The ABS-2045 is a self propelled passenger stairs using the same fl ight as the ABT-2045, with the same aircraft capability, and most of the proven concepts of the very popular ABS-580.With a lower reach and more compact design than its bigger brother ABS-580, the ABS-2045 is an extremely effi cient

self propelled passenger stair setting a high standard in passenger boarding for short/medium range aircraft.

All driving and aircraft approach operations are carried out from the driving console offering optimum conditions of safety, excellent visibility on aircraft, and operator comfort.

Available with a range of diesel engine options conforming to latest emission standards, this new model features power steering, dual circuit braking, heavy duty hydraulic stabilisers, automatic stair locking, stair lighting and an emergency hand pump. The chassis using proven components from the TLD NBL belt loader, is highly

corrosion resistant, being sandblasted prior to paint in addition to an application of hot zinc / aluminium alloy spray.

The ABT-2045 and ABS-2045 stairs are assembled in the TLD Shanghai factory, and special attention has been placed on transportability. Both units can be confi gured in order to be transported in containers (up to 2 units in a 40’ Container). Reconfi guration on site can be done within a few hours, and require minimum handling means.

Combining simplicity, high quality and safety, the ABT-2045 and ABS-2045 are setting the modern standard for compact passenger stairs.

This unit offers very low Total Cost of Ownership and the commonality of components with the latest version of the TPX-200-MT and upcoming versions of the TPX-500 and TPX-500-S allows an exceptional support in term of spare parts availability. Excellent operating performance, in conjunction with very competitive pricing clearly makes the TMX-200-MTS the best value in its category.

The fi rst TLD electric reGen loader keeps its promises Nearly 18 months ago, TLD, already a leader in electric powered equipment with the world largest fl eets of AC and DC powered loaders, developed a challenging specifi cation for a battery powered loader with the input from several key customers.

due to degradation. At the same time TLD studied how to re-use the energy that was available in the lowering of the loader’s elevator, rather than throwing it away as all loaders do today. These studies resulted in a system design that reclaims energy (regeneration) and uses it to supplement the battery during its next lift, in a way that avoids the wasteful and harmful spike of current normally required. The key innovation is the method, patented by TLD, of managing the energy fl ows through the use of Supercapacitors.

The TXL-838-reGen loader battery compartment allows easy access to its 1000 amp-hour battery.

The Supercapacitors are able to absorb and return energy to the system at a very fast rate compared to other energy storage devices and therefore lend themselves ideally to the Cargo loader application. The result is a loader that can run 2 to 3 times as long between charges as any other loader on the market

This specifi cation was developed to change the market expectation for autonomy and battery life for battery powered loaders. The main goals were to operate with the speed and power of a diesel loader for a full day of heavy operation up to and beyond the handling of 250 containers before having the need to re-charge.

As the last few months have passed by and as the product demonstrates its impressive capabilities in the fi eld, it has become obvious to the TLD team and more importantly, to our customer partners on this project, that the TLD TXL-838-reGen, 7 ton battery powered loader, is keeping its promises. Meeting and even exceeding its initial lofty goals insures that the TXL-838-reGen has the highest battery autonomy of any DC powered loader on the market today.

At project start TLD engineers carefully studied the science of battery technology and those aspects of their use that limit their autonomy and longevity. The result was a clear understanding of the need to control the average current draw to a minimum level and particularly the peak current draws that are the unavoidable effect when lifting an elevator. It is actually these current peaks that result in limiting the batteries capacity between charges, and defi ne the period before it needs to be replaced

today and with a similar advantage for extended battery life. Many cargo handlers are suspect that battery powered loaders can be an effective green solution, with the need to opportunity charge during the day in order to continue working, thus forcing the need for additional loaders. The TLD TXL-838-reGenputs that concern to rest by being the only battery powered loader today that truly represents a one for one replacement of a diesel loader.

A TXL-838-reGen–SUP (224” bridge height x 128” wide and 189” elevator height) will be on display at the GSE show in Las Vegas this October.
