Masako Ban, founder and designer of Japan’s renowned jewellery and accessory brand Acrylic, has never been afraid of change.

Originally trained as a graphic designer, Ban actually made her living working at an architecture firm up until 2003.

“I always admired designers, but I did not choose to study art in university.”

In 2001, however, with no training and little more than a keen eye and passionate outlook, Ban started to create the unique designs that would become Acrylic.

Inspired by such designers as the U.K.’s Caroline Broadhead (“…she is the artist of my first Acrylic bracelet…”) and Japan’s Tokujin Yoshioka (“…his work gives a feeling of transparency…”), Ban established Acrylic in 2003 in Tokyo, and quickly earned a reputation for delivering designs that possess that rarest combination of fashion qualities: originality and accessibility. A short two years after establishing the Acrylic brand, Ban’s first collection was selected for the MoMA Design store in New York, and in November of that same year she was able to open her first exclusive Acrylic shop in Tokyo.

From there Masako Ban’s reputation has experienced a fast and deserving rise to the fashion forefront. Her work has been featured in galleries throughout Japan, at the New York International Gift Fair, at museums in Germany and London, and even in the pages of Wallpaper*. (Ban won the magazine’s 2007 award for Best Jewellery Design.)

But the accolades are still far from the humble designer’s most rewarding aspects of her work.

“The reward is in the encounter with the material itself,” muses Ban. “Creating simple designs that make use of the subject matter within – this is rewarding to me. And being able to produce each piece – with much care - in Japan. And, of course, having happy customers!”

And while Ban admittedly takes great pride and being able to create her products in her home country, she admits that geography plays less of a role (or, perhaps more accurately, a different kind of role) in the creative process than one may think.

“I am proud of the Japanese culture, but I am not conscious myself of a cultural influence in my work. I acknowledge the tradition of Japanese art, but can do so because I feel confidence in my own unique vision. I do, however, think that it is very important for my creations to be made entirely in Japan – from the raw materials to the final production – in order to accurately express my identity.”

An inspiration to all who embrace change (or even just consider it from time to time), Ban has, in just six short years and with little more than a strong will and sheer talent, gone from architectural firm employee to an award winning designer featured in galleries and museums all over the world. And you know she isn’t stopping there.

How would you capture the essence of wax through light and – no kidding - a tongue?

It’s an assignment that would flummox most of us, but for Mani Mani, one half of the design/architectural duo Fishbol Atelier, the offbeat introduction to the Carleton University School of Architecture clearly had stickiness. (A quick translation for architectural newbies: wax represents the material to explore; light, the ephemeral element that helps spatial interpretation; and tongue, human’s physiological perception.)

“It was definitely pretty abstract,” he says from Fishbol’s Toronto studio, “but it’s that kind of mentality, that kind of way of really thinking about materials which is how we approach design today.” And it’s a slant that undeniably pays dividends in his and Carleton peer and Fishbol partner Elie Nehme’s creations, especially in the newly launched Bungeeseat. The idea for the pared-down chair - intriguingly made with bungee cords and bamboo plywood and currently creating a buzz among design aficionados such as MoCo Loco – was inspired by the works of Jean Prouvé and René Herbst. “He’s the godfather of all these bungee chairs,” Mani explains of Herbst, the so-called Man of Steel who created the 1927 nickel-plated tubular steel Chaise Sandows with rubber strips. Part of the recent Design Cities exhibition that showcased key cities at their creative heights (from London in 1851, through Milan, 1957, and Tokyo, 1987) at London’s Design Museum, the fact that their pieces stripped away any “unnecessary loads” found in chairs excited Fishbol’s modernist aesthetic.

“It’s very poetic,” Mani says. “So we started playing around with that.” Using Grasshopper for the digital modelling allowed them to run through 100 different versions of their ready-to-assemble chair within seconds. “Surprisingly,” he

enthuses, “the Bungeeseat is really comfortable. The prototypes were very generic – bungee cords all over – then we changed the proportions, the structure, the tension, the gradient. The bungee cords that now sit on the frame are perfectly designed to cope with the tension your body is putting on them.” Those cords which come in accent colours of your choice are (incredulously) locally made near their studio in downtown Toronto and Fishbol also fell for the renewable resource of bamboo plywood from a supplier in Markham, Ontario. “It performs perfectly – even better than plywood,” Mani adds. “We needed to use it not necessarily just for the environmental factors, but also for the structural integrity of it.”

Beyond this type of limited furniture production, the Fishbol pair is on a global roll, designing in Kuwait and Seoul, collaborating with London and Montreal and Ottawa, their former home where they first hit the spotlight for redesigning the Lotus Lounge. “It’s a good time to be in design,” Nehme says. “People are talking more about design, and people are not interested in just the same old Ikea-type furniture.”

While design today is clearly borderless, there is, however, a growing definition of their work – which often features wood as in, for example, the acclaimed Fishbol book seat - as ‘Canadian.’ “I absolutely love that,” says Mani, whose background is Persian and Nehme’s is Lebanaese. “We’re proud to be associated with Canadian design.”

‘Born and raised in small town British Columbia to parents of German and Nigerian descent,’ does not sound like the opening line to an article about a gifted and soulful blues chanteuse, but then Ndidi Onukwulu is far from your typical artist.

At one moment as serious and thought provoking as a Nina Simone or PJ Harvey, the next as light and playful as an Edie Brickell or Ella Fitzgerald, the Vancouver-based, Juno-nominated singer/songwriter delivers tales of loss and love, embracing the most traditional of styles while still managing to make her music distinctively Ndidi Onukwulu.

Onukwulu’s sophomore release, The Contradictor, (featuring such prominent Vancouver musicians as Steve Dawson and Jesse Zubot), is a collection of hooky goodness, walking a warm and welcoming line between blues, jazz, reggae, pop and even surf rock. But somehow Onukwulu’s smooth voice, soulful delivery and distinctive charm come together to bring such divergent styles and genres together in nothing short of harmonious glory.

TLC* caught up with Ndidi just prior to her Juno weekend appearance to gain a little more insight into what makes such a seemingly enigmatic artist so accessible…

TLC* - Does spring have any influence on you as an artist?Ndidi Onukwulu - Spring makes me feel a little lighter, I tend to sit outside more and write songs inspired by people-watching at the beach or in a park or in the woods. I also tend to wear dresses, which is always fun.

TLC* - What is your biggest influence musically?Ndidi - People are my biggest influence - all people. You never know when you will overhear a conversation that could create a song. I make music for humanity, so that is where I derive all of my inspiration: Humans and the universe.

TLC* - Who are you listening to these days?Ndidi - Right now I am listening to TV on the Radio, Marianne Faithfull, J.B Lenoir, and a Nigerian Soul Compilation from the 70’s.

TLC* - Favourite album(s) when you were growing up?Ndidi – Yikes! That is too tough of a question. I loved way too many.

TLC* - Who would be your dream duet partner?Ndidi - My dream duet would be with Tina Turner.

TLC* - If you could be any musician, past or present, other than Ndidi Onukwulu, who would it be and why?Ndidi - Hmm… I don’t think I would be a musician; I would like to be Ghandi instead. Is that alright? Or Joan of Arc.

TLC* - If you weren’t playing music, what would you hope to be doing for a living?Ndidi - I would be a politician running for MP. I may still end up being a politician, but I think I would want to run for Prime Minister.

TLC* - Where do you hope your music will take you next?Ndidi - To bigger stages with many more people that I can share with, which will hopefully allow me to transition into a position of political influence and, ultimately, into the Prime Minister’s seat.

So it appears while most musicians aspire to change little more than the amount of zeros at the end of their bank statement, blues songstress Ndidi Onukwulu has set her sights set a little higher. Chances are wherever her aspirations take her – be it helping an oppressed nation earn its independence through peaceful civil disobedience, a seat in Canadian parliament, or even just some more Juno nominations - the world will be a better place for it.
