Work Items for year 2001• Work Item 1: LAN technology – Task 1

– 1.1   Networking issues related to the fabric architectures under analysis in WP2.

• Work Item 2: File Transfer Protocol – Task 2– 2.1 Study of standardization status of the ftp protocol at IETF;

– 2.2  Experimental evaluation of prototypes of the grid ftp, i.e. of different implementations of the extended ftp protocol under definition at the Grid Forum: e.g. Globus ftp, NCftp (NASA) and Washington University ftp;

– 2.3  Contribution to the definition of the extensions of the ftp protocol in collaboration with the Grid Forum; evaluation of the possibility to extend the protocol definition for the support of file transfer in a multicast scenarios through reliable multicast.

– 3.1  Study of state of the art of reliable multicast for the evaluation of the maturity of this architecture currently under study at IRTF;

– 3.2  Evaluation of the applicability of reliable multicast to replica management (sub-task to be developed in collaboration with WP2 of Data Grid);

– 3.3  Experimentation of reliable multicast-based ftp prototypes;

– 3.4  Study of applicability of multicast extensions to ftp in the framework of the Grid Forum.

• Work Item 4: IBP (Internet Backplane Protocol) – Task 2– 4.1  Evaluation of networking issues related to the IBP protocol;

– 4.2  Evaluation of IBP data server distribution in the wide area.

• Work Item 5: SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) – Task 2

– 5.1  Study of the IETF standard, of its suitability to the grid architecture; possible study of different software architectures achieving the same goal.

• Work Item 6: Traffic Monitoring – Data Grid – Task 4, Data Grid

– 6.1 Analysis of different monitoring solutions – both at the network and application level – to be applied to Testbed 0 and to the following test bed phases;

– 6.2 Possible adaptation/refinement of an existing monitoring tools/solutions to adapt them to the grid computing environment.

• Work Item 7: MPLS (MultiProtocol Label Switching) – Task 5, Task 8– 7.1 Experimental study of the MPLS architecture when applied for

implementation and configuration of wide-area Virtual Private Networks (VPN), possibly in collaboration with other national or international initiatives (e.g. GARR-G and TF-NGN);

– 7.2 Implementation of VPNs with bandwidth guarantees through the support of Quality of Service;

– 7.3  MPS: study of the architecture; possible implementation of an INFN-GRID test bed or experimental study in collaboration with other initiatives (e.g. GARR-G and/or TF-NGN).

• Work Item 8: WDM/dWDM– Task 7– 8.1   Study of the technology and of its evolution;– 8.2 Possible implementation of a test bed in the local and/or

geographic environment.
