Instructions for preparing your pitch
• The pitch deck can be used as a template for an “intro” or executive summary for your social enterprise concept
• The point of this deck is to walk the audience through a story. – What’s this all about? What is the social enterprise? – Why is it interesting from a social impact perspective? – How much money do you need? – What will you do with the money? – How does the social enterprise work? – What type of people will implement this social enterprise? – What are the risks?
• Slides should retain a good amount of “white space” – no long paragraphs (e.g. your slides shouldn’t look like this one!)
• Use graphics – but don’t go overboard!
Overview
• Name of social enterprise?• What it does
– 1 sentence description
• Objectives of presentation• How much money you want
– What do you need it for?
Be careful not to provide too much information in the introduction otherwise you risk being redundant.
Problem
• What is the social problem you are trying to solve (and where)?
- Its important to hook the audience in this first slide (this is the “opening gambit”), some tactics are:
• Question – “did you know.... ?”• Fact – “90% of children in Liberia....”• Story – “Pamilla once lived in poverty....” • Quote – “Muhammad Yunnis said, “....”• Picture – photo • Perspective/Retrospective – historical or personal

• How do you propose to solve the problem?– Explain the strategy and/or mission of your
social innovation
• Innovative – What makes your approach special or
unique from others trying to solve the same problem?
Benefit: Social Impact
• What are the benefits of your innovation?
• What is the social impact you intend to create?– Give details – Try to use some bullets with hard
numbers
Market
• Who is your customer?– Is the customer and the beneficiary of
your social enterprise different? Explain – Characteristics that motivate them to
buy/use your products/services
• Describe your market – Location, size, trends, distinctive
features
Products/Services
• What are the products and/or services of your social innovation?
• What are the benefits of these products and services for your market?
Innovation Model
• How does your social enterprise work?– Impact model– Revenue model
• How will model enable growth/scale– This is best as diagram
• Why/how will it achieve sustainability?– Plan to make social innovation a going
concern in the long term. • What is your partnership strategy
– Who are your partners/alliances? How are these relationships structured?
Team
• What are their qualifications? – These should relate directly to the
work being done • Why should social investors have
confidence in these people? – Why will they make the innovation
successful?
Financials Requirements: The Ask
• How much do you want for your social innovation?– Should be related to startup costs
and/or early operations• What will use it for?
– Be specific • What kind of money?
– grant, debt, equity, etc.
Risks and success factors
• Main risks of your enterprise?• How you will minimize or mitigate
these risks?• Why will you be successful?
Close
• Closing image– Leave your audience with a picture,
quote, story, etc. that reflects the change you are seeking to create and illustrated the benefits of their help.
