Task 1

• This is about understanding the key terms you will be asked about in the exam.

• If you know what they mean you can start getting easy marks.

• Task - Write the correct key term next to each meaning on the sheet

Task 2 – musical trends

• What do you understand by the word ‘trend’ e.g. As in a ‘trend’ in fashion or music

• Task 2a – In groups, come up with your own definition of what a ‘trend’ is.

• Come up with some examples of recent musical trends.

• Feed back your ideas to the rest of the class

Task 2 continued – musical trends

• Western classical music has also gone through a series of trends.

• Some of these trends lasted for many years before changing. We call these ‘Eras’.

• E.g. The ‘Baroque’ Era, the ‘Classical’ Era etc.• For your exam it is a good idea to know the names of

each era and when they occurred.

• Task – Put the musical eras into the correct order on the timeline, starting with the earliest.

• The Romantic era of music lasted from about 1800-1900.

• Task 3a – In groups, discuss why you think it might be called ‘Romantic’.
