Allen Dutton was born in 1922 in Kingman, Arizona. His pioneering grandparents came to the Arizona Territory in the late nineteenth century. His grandfather was a territorial legislator who helped push for the Normal School which later became Northern Arizona University. His grandmother Elida Dutton was one of the first white women to see the Grand Canyon and was photographed there with her husband in 1883. This photograph was later re-created by Dutton with his family for the Then and Now series. His mother grew up in Goldroad, Arizona and died when he was 14 years old. After his discharge in 1946, he went on to study painting and sculpture at the Art Center School in Los Angeles. Dutton earned a master’s in history with a minor in art from Arizona State University. Dutton held a variety of teaching posts in public schools before joining the Art Department at Phoenix College in 1960. He taught photography courses and later served as head of the department. In 1962 he attended a workshop in Denver, Colorado taught by photographer Minor White, who became a good friend and was a significant influence on Dutton’s work. Allen A. In 1982, he retired from Phoenix College to devote himself full time to his art. Dutton embarked on a re-photographic survey project that produced three books under the titles Arizona Then and Now and Phoenix Then and Now. Dutton’s interest in documenting change in Arizona led to an ambitious project of photographing every street corner in every town in Arizona. See Series I: Places and Series II: Phoenix. His eclectic interests include nude camera studies, landscapes, portraits, and a series that takes a humorous look at retired life in Sun City, Arizona. Allen Dutton has 2 daughters Elizabeth and Wendy, and a son, Nels. He currently resides with his wife Mary Ann in Prescott, Arizona where he continues his artistic endeavors. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE: This collection represents over fifty years of Allen Dutton’s photographic work. The majority of prints are signed, dated, and captioned. Dutton used an 8x10 or 11x14 view camera to produce all his negatives. These were then contact printed and developed by him. This collection contains over 25,000 photographs, in excellent condition, arranged into nine series by format and subject. All photographs are 8x10, black and white, and unmatted unless otherwise noted. Series I: Places (1977-2001) Photographs are organized alphabetically and were taken in Arizona. See county map in Box 1 as reference. There are two copies of almost all images in this series. Copies are not identical. All oversized photographs are organized alphabetically at the end of this series. An asterisk after place name means also see oversized. Series II: Phoenix (1980s-1990s) These photographs are organized alphabetically by major street name which run east-to-west. (Note in Phoenix numbered streets and avenues are cross streets that run north-to-south.) Minor streets appear alphabetically at the end of this series. All oversized photographs are organized alphabetically at the end of this series. An asterisk after street name means also see oversized. Series III: Then and Now (1800s-2000s) These photographs were created for the Then and Now projects. Historic images were collected by Dutton through research in multiple repositories. He then attempted to recreate the exact angles of the original. He paired the “old and new” photographs. The images in this series are arranged by book page number. Photographs not selected for publication are arranged alphabetically. Series IV: Landscapes and Abstracts (1958-2000) Photographs are arranged by subject then size and chronologically within. Landscape scenes from 1964 are entirely of the ocean, possibly northern California. All photographs from 1964 are small prints mounted on boards. Box 129 “landscapes with nudes”

includes a series of photographs Mr. Dutton titled “Hide and Seek” where people are hidden among a larger landscape. Series V: Portraits (1950s-2001) Photographs are arranged by subject then size and chronologically within. Includes images from the Arizona Children’s Colony located outside Coolidge, Arizona - a hospital for mentally challenged youth under the age of 21. Also included are images of professional wrestlers Lou Thesz and Gene Kiniski in the wrestling ring. Also contains a signed, matted print of actor Nick Nolte, Dutton’s student at Phoenix College. Series VI: Nude Montages (1980s) A photomontage is the artistic joining together of several images or image parts to create one new single composition. These montages use imagery from nude studies, landscapes, and abstracts to create the final photographic image which is centered on the female form. No computers or digital manipulation were used to create these photographs. All montages were created in the darkroom by Mr. Dutton. Series VII: Color Transparencies (1980s) Photographs are arranged alphabetically by place. Transparencies have no prints. (Requires light table for viewing.) Series VIII: Negatives (1970s-2000s) All negatives are 8x10, black and white, and were used to make contact prints. Negatives are arranged numerically. All negatives have prints, but not all prints have a negative. Not all negatives are identified with a place and date. Missing negatives are noted. Series IX: Other (1977-2000) Contains self-published or small press books and exhibit catalogue from the Corcoran Gallery located in Washington, D.C. Not all published works are represented here. Oversized (OV): All oversized photographs are 11x14 unless otherwise noted.
