Background ‘Possible new activity’ of WG MWFR (5th meeting):
Complex terrain aspects→ position paper (check: minutes) for next meeting
Workshop ‘HiRCot2012’ activity by BOKU / U Alaska Liaison HiRCot - MWFR MWFR supports workshop
→ Mathias as co-organizer (liaison MWFR)→ WMO supports up to 4 participants→ preferably from developing countries
Issues→ formal support by WG→ position of WG→ who selects supported participants→ are Jimy / Mathias supported by WMO as well?

Aims
1. Identifying and addressing problems in high resolution numerical modeling in areas with complex topography.
2. Setting up a platform and framework to strengthen international and national collaboration in the form of joint projects and a common interface where information and follow-up of the workshop can be done.
3. Setting up basic information and the proper environment for knowledge transfer to students and also newcomers to the field.

1. Identifying and addressing problems in high
resolution numerical modelling in areas with complex topography.
problematic topics identified by researchers and model users when pushing the models to high resolution in complex terrain:
– Initialisation and input data.– Physical parameterizations.– Computational issues.– Numerical issues.
Titel| UntertitelName(vorname.name [at] uibk.ac.at)
Stepwise approach of addressing these thematic topics, analysis of their influence on the modeling (coupling models, changing the models used or upgrading or further developing them):
– Shaping the agenda for the discussions among the workshop participants on a wiki platform. The main topics will be identified and gathered into the aforementioned thematic areas or new topics will be created if needed
– Discussion on how to address these issues in plenary groups and sub-groups per topic.
– A set of conclusions and possible ways and future collaborations to address these issues

2. Setting up a platform and framework to strengthen international and national collaborations in the form of joint projects and a common interface where information and follow-up of the workshop can be done.
This should be done by:
• Defining working groups for future activities
• Drafting projects and possibilities for future joint collaborations, including the proposal for a joint project to NSF as required in the submitted NSF proposal.
• Setting up the way to continue pursuing these research activities, which should include the addition of updates, links and members into the wiki page created especially for this workshop

3. Setting up basic information and the proper environment for knowledge transfer to students and also newcomers to the field
Last but not least, this workshop will consider the needs of future researchers in the field. This will be performed by the active collaboration of selected students in the workshop as well as dissemination activities (performed both by the students and the researchers) of their own hosting Institutions/Universities to spread information to the young potential scientists.
