Research in GermanyAt a Glance

Germany is Europe‟s no. 1 in patent registrations (157,000). Among the world‟s three most innovative countries (USA, Japan).

Since 1948, 16 Nobel prizes have been won by Max Planck Gesellschaft.

Other internationally renowned research institutes:

The Fraunhofer Gesellschaft for applied research.

The Helmholtz Association with 15 internationally leading large research institutions.

Fraunhofer IIS received the “Deutsche Zukunftspreis” (German award for future-relevant inventions) in the year 2000 for the development of MP3.

Research in GermanyInternational Studies and Research

Almost 1/8 of students enrolled at German universities comes from abroad. Germany is now the most popular place to study after the United States and Britain.

Most popular study subject for international students: Engineering.

Germany‟s growing reputation as a centre of cutting-edge technology and innovation is increasingly attracting academics and researchers from abroad. Almost 26,000 are employed at German universities and a further 26,200 are funded by academic and research bodies.

Research in GermanyPersonal Experience

The concept of “HiWi” (HilfsWissenschaftler – research assistant or student

assistant) is the link between academic studies and actual work.

Other important working experience / career openers:

Internships.

Final theses, dissertations.

PhD fellowships.

All of the above are offered in the various institutes of Fraunhofer Gesellschaft.

Knowledge of German is not always a requirement but certainly a big

advantage! (also for everyday life)

Fraunhofer EZRT Home of XXL-CT

XXL-CT targets at volume imaging of large objects.

Applications lie in automotive, aerospace and wind energy industries.

A new test site for the Linear Accelerator is in operation since 2012.

Radiation energy is produced in a high frequency field. Thus a continuous increase in energy is possible. Radiation energy can be as high as 9 MeV.

Objects up to Ø 3 m and 3 t weight in standard CT.
