1. Content & Introduction

For my third report I chose to write a review about a movie since I already visited

two cultural events (Swan Lake Ballet and the Fashion Show Exhibition).First I watched the much attention getting ''The Twilight Sage: Breaking Down'' atthe theatre last November. I'm following the series since the beginning anddespite all the critic and my ever old grudge against Kristin Stewart (MainCharacter) I thought it would be a better idea to write a review about a moviewithout any sequels.And a few weeks ago I went to see Titanic 3D, the re-released version. So I decidedto write my third review about one of the most commercial movies ever.I wrote this report according to Palet's Kunstwijzer '' FILM''.

2. Information

Titanic directed by James Cameron in 1997, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate

Winslet as the main characters and Billy Zane and Bill Paxton. I saw the movie atPath Schouwburgplein on the 6th of April. The original premiere was on 1st ofDecember 1997 but since the disaster was 100 years ago on the 14th of april thisyear James Cameron released the movie again on the 4th with a slight change. In3D.

Ruim veertien jaar geleden brak Titanicalle records. Het was de duurste film ooit gemaakt, maar het werd ook de

eerste die met de kaartverkoop een miljard dollar binnenhaalde (en daar stopte de teller niet). De zegetocht werd

afgesloten met het recordaantal van elf Oscars, waarmee de film zich op gelijke hoogte plaatste met Ben-Hur. In de

jaren na dit overweldigende succes klonken echter steeds meer negatieve geluiden over de film. Want hoewel hij bij

een groot publiek zeer geliefd bleef, leek er een even grote groep die de film verafschuwde en dat luid en duidelijk liet

horen. Kortom: Titanic is een enorm hoge boom die sinds zijn succes ontzettend veel wind heeft gevangen. Een

hernieuwde release in 3D is dan ook een mooie gelegenheid om te zien of die Oscars destijds terecht waren en vooral

of de film de tand des tijds enigszins heeft doorstaan.

Het opnieuw uitbrengen van Titanic in 3D is door velen afgedaan als goedkope uitmelkerij, maar vergeet niet dat dergelijke

praktijken al gebeurden zolang er films zijn. Dat in acht nemend zou de film deze maand naar alle waarschijnlijk toch wel

opnieuw zijn uitgebracht, aangezien het komende week exact honderd jaar geleden is dat het beroemde schip ten onder ging.

De 3D-toevoeging kan in dat geval eerder als een extraatje dan als een verkoopargument worden beschouwd. Daarnaast heeft

regisseur James Cameron zich de afgelopen tien jaar dusdanig intensief beziggehouden met de 3D-techniek dat hij het

voordeel van de twijfel verdient. Gemakzucht hebben we Cameron in ieder geval nooit kunnen verwijten en zodoende is er voor

de lieve som van achttien miljoen dollar meer dan een jaar gewerkt aan de 3D-conversie.

En werkt het? Ach, het beste compliment voor dit soort conversies is dat de 3D niet storend is, en dat is bij Titanichet geval. De

3D ziet er verzorgd uit, maar echt interessant is het niet en na een tijdje zal het weinigen nog opvallen. Als de 3D al iets laat

zien, dan is het wel dat Cameron in zijn shots toch al ontzettend goed met diepte werkt, wat de 3D zeker ten goede komt. Er

werd dan ook vooral gebruikgemaakt van zeer overtuigende sets en schaalmodellen in plaats van de overdadige CGI-

omgevingen die in de jaren na deze film steeds meer de overhand kregen. Afgezien van de 3D heeft Cameron geen andere

veranderingen doorgevoerd of nieuwe scnes toegevoegd. Gelukkig maar, want in zijn huidige vorm duurt de film al lang

genoeg.

Voor de 3D hoef je het dus niet te doen, maar het beste argument voor een bioscoopbezoek is natuurlijk de film zelf. Die blijkt

anderhalf decennium later nauwelijks aan kracht te hebben ingeboet. Het is lastig een f ilm met zoveel iconische momenten los

te zien van zijn enorme status, maar wie dat kan, krijgt een zowel klassieke als moderne Hollywoodproductie te zien die in al

zijn aspecten uiterst effectief is. Zo is er het verwijt dat het een enorme tijd duurt tot het schip de befaamde ijsberg raakt en

richting de zeebodem begint te verdwijnen, maar met de voorkennis van een eerdere kijkbeurt blijkt juist hoe zorgvuldig

Cameron in deze eerste helft de zaken opzet. Niet alleen de personages en hun motieven worden goed uiteengezet; hij laat

door hun ogen ook het volledige schip zien, zodat we bekend zijn met alle locaties die later voor levensbedreigende situaties

zullen zorgen.

Wat tevens opvalt, is dat de centraal staande romance niet zomaar uit de lucht komt vallen. Het kost Jack en Rose een viertal

uitgebreide scnes waarin ze elkaar steeds beter leren kennen tot ze elkaar de liefde durven te verklaren. Daarnaast is het

prettig dat de twee voor de verandering ook eens echt een reden hebben om verliefd op elkaar te worden. Het feit dat ze allebei

afkomstig zijn uit een totaal verschillende klasse sluit goed aan bij het diepgewortelde klassenverschil dat bij de Titanic-ramp

zoveel mensen onnodig de dood heeft ingejaagd. Daarnaast zorgt het voor een menselijk aspect; zelfs wanneer het spektakel

de overhand krijgt, blijft de focus op de twee hoofdpersonen liggen en zien we ze nog worstelen met de obstakels van hun

verboden liefde. Jammer alleen dat de personages die daarvoor verantwoordelijk zijn allemaal zo eendimensionaal zijn

uitgewerkt.

Maar dan is er natuurlijk nog de spectaculaire en soms razend spannende tweede helft. Veertien jaar geleden was het al een

visueel overdonderende film en daar blijkt weinig aan te zijn veranderd: ook in het huidige filmlandschap kan Titaniczich op

visueel gebied nog goed staande houden (enkele houterig bewegende CGI-figuranten daargelaten). De evenwichtige

combinatie van spektakel en romantiek geeft de f ilm een tijdloze klasse die de klassiekerstatus volkomen rechtvaardigt. Of je de

film nu gaat zien vanwege de 3D of niet, de ervaring van Titanicop het witte doek is zijn geld hoe dan ook volledig waard. Met

of zonder 3D-toeslag.

3. Form & Content

The story was mostly on board of the titanic. At the begin still at the boardingplace in Southampton.Because the movie tells a story from 1912 the people were dresses with a lot ofmake-up, costumes, feathers and looked like they were very rich (Rose). Atcontrast with the lower class people on board the 3rd class. Poor peasants inworking clothes, old and dirty jackets and shoes (Jack).

The atmosphere was pretty well matched with the scene. So to create a happyimpression it was organized at a party for example. With loud energetic music, dimand bright light and laughing people. In serious matters, like for example thedining scene everyone was needy dressed. The violin music and the tense facialexpressions made the watcher aware of the tricky situation.There wasn't much difference in choice of music. It was very classical andrestrained. At the exciting scenes it was more orchestra music. Which wouldaccelerate at more thrilling moments. And of course Titanic's most famoussoundtrack ever by Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On creates the necessary tearsat the end.

The story is being told by the elderly Rose Dawson Calvert, the main character.Through her story we see everything what happened during her trip on the Titanicfrom her perspective and JackDawson , the other maincharacter's, perspective. It's likeher anecdote's are coming to life.The scene that I remember themost is that moment where Roselays on a door while Jack is laying

in ice-cold water already goneand she lets go off him and saysthat she'll never let him go..I think if I should label Titanic, thegenre best describing what kindof movie it is would be adisaster/romance movie.

A short summary of the story.

Treasure hunter Brock Lovett and his team explore the wreck of RMS Titanic,searching for a diamond necklace. They find a sketch of a nude woman wearing it

with the date April 14, 1912, the night the Titanic sank. An elderly woman namedRose Dawson Calvert, heard about the drawing, calls Lovett claims that she is thewoman and she and visit him on his salvage ship.

Rose recalls her time aboard the Titanic, revealing that she is Rose DeWitt Bukater,

a passenger believed to have died in the sinking.

'' Rose boards the ship with her fianc Cal, and her mother, Ruth DeWitt Bukater.Not pleased by her arranged marriage, Rose considers suicide. A artist named JackDawson stops her. Jack and Rose develop a close friendship, though Cal and Ruthare not excited about Jack.She soon realizes that she prefers him over Cal.They go to Rose's room and she asks Jack to sketch her naked while wearing theHeart of the Ocean, Cal's engagement present. Later on deck they witness theship's collision with an iceberg. Rose tells Jack that they should warn her mother

and Cal.Cal discovers Jack's drawing and note from Rose in his safe along with thenecklace. Furious, he has his bodyguard slip the necklace into Jack's coat pocket.Accused of stealing it, by a set up Jack is arrested Rose runs away from Cal and hermother and releases Jack. Cal realizes that he gave his coat with the diamond toRose. He returns to the boat deck and boards a lifeboat.Jack and Rose return to the top deck. All lifeboats have departed and passengersare falling to their deaths as the ship breaks in half.As it sinks, Jack and Rose ride the stern into the ocean. Jack helps Rose onto a

broken door. A lifeboat is to pick up survivors.It saves Rose, but is unable to reach Jack before he dies from hypothermia.Rose and the other survivors are taken by the RMS Carpathia to New York, whereRose gives her name as Rose Dawson never to hear from Cal again.''

Her story complete, Rose goes alone to the stern of Lovett's ship she takes out theHeart of the Ocean, has been in her possession all the time, and drops it into theocean. While asleep in her bed, the photos on her dresser are a make clear that shelived a free life inspired by Jack.

Main characters are obviously Rose and Jack. Recognizable by their lifes which aretotally the opposite of each other. I could call them 'normal' people but in theirown time. Not modern day normal seen the different norms and values. The bondsbetween the characters are all very different seen the story is a bit complex. Butaccording to the summary it is easy to see how connections are.Most viewers would be sympatic about Jack dying without ever getting the chanceon a fair, long, happy and healthy life with his true love Rose.

4. Function & Opinion

The movie had no real function like a documentary for example. But it did show

what happened during that short trip to New York. It told a story from a survivorsperspective. Not fully based on true facts, things are fictional but given occasionsdid happen. I think it was mostly made for amusement.The director did a great job on special effects and drama, lighting etcetera. For a1997 movie the technical things are very well performed. So it is that you couldn'tsay that the whole movie was shot in a swimming pool.Even 15 years later the technical supports in the movie can easily cope with all thehigh definition effects these days. I think that's one reason this movie made reallymade it back then.

Though my expectations weren't so high since I already saw Titanic a few times athome I really wanted to experience the cinema feeling. I had no expectations atall.I also didn't expect any changes. And at first I thought there weren't any. Butafterwards I read that James Cameron indeed changed one little thing. Namely, ascene were Rose supposedly looks at the sky. Because of complains that the starsweren't in the right it was adjusted.

I have a weakness for lame chick flicks. Andlet's say, Titanic is a kind of a chick flick right?On the other hand you have beautiful KateWinslet and smoking hot young LeonardoDiCaprio. That in its whole combined with thestory which is great either way it makes akiller movie already. Now is 3 hours and 9minutes a very long time, but what happensis when you're sucked in the story timepasses too fast. I sat a whole 3 hours. And at

the end I was again blown away or the tenthtime.Titanic is just this movie that never fails toamuse.
